I'd would feel much more so owning an Apple laptop. I feel lots of folks in B&N or Starbucks using it there just want to show it off. I doubt I would ever bring it there, most don't.

Do you have data to support that presumption? That they just want to show off? What makes you think that? Because they're using it in public? So MacBook users are showing off but the Asus users, well, they're just legitimately trying to get some work done?

I find your statement even more ridiculous than the OP's statement that using an iPad anywhere is showing off. No one is impressed by a MacBook or an iPad.

Just like Chupa said, 170 million iPads. MacBooks are one of the best-selling laptops these days. No one will be impressed (nor will they think you're showing off) by using your Apple product in public. 10 years ago, maybe. 2014? No way.

I felt a little conspicuous when I got the original iPad on the first day release. Since it was so new, lots of people would ask me about it if I had it out in public - mostly they were just curious what I thought of it. Nowadays most everyone has either a tablet or smart phone in their hands no matter what else they could be doing. So I would surmise that no one cares about my iPad.

Sorry pal. Asus users go to libraries to get some work done! :D

I did post that's how "I" felt about Apple laptops in B&N or Starbucks. Geez!

Sorry if my post came off strong. It wasn't really meant to be harsh. I was just trying to illustrate that iPads, iPhones and MacBooks are the commodity devices they seem not to be.

I'm with the op on this one, and I think it's because I was around for the first iPad launch, and I hounded anyone who I saw with one. When I bought one, I felt conspicuous carrying it around as if I were toting around a bar of gold.

I agree that mystique has probably worn off by now, but I still feel the same way. When I carry my Mini I don't feel so self concious. <shrug> I can't explain it logically!

i don't know why i feel this way but I've had the iPad 2, iPad 3, and iPad air and every time I'm in public and i am on it i feel like it stands out too much in a bad way. Either showing off that i have it or i feel like its too flashy for the wrong attention(thieves). Does anybody else feel like this? With the mini, if you own it, do you feel this same way?

The OP has great situational awareness.

In NYC for awhile there was rampant robbery of apple products on subways, and streets from people displaying them in public.

Bloomberg even called it an 'epidemic'

Not everyone has, or can afford, Apple products. Particularly iPads (which many consider a non-necessity vs iPhones). So when the OP pulls out his fancy, shiny new ipad Air, it's not unreasonable for him to be a bit wary at all.

Of course this would depend on the environment he's in. I'm sure the experience of someone using his brand new ipad air in a plastic surgeons waiting room on the upper west side is quite different than using the device at 2am on the subway.

Aside from the gym I don't agree. I was at the gym this week and a dude had an iPhone 5 and a full size Ipad with him on an exercise bike lol.

I use my iPad at 2AM on the subway. Im certainly happy to choke someone who wants to test my patience.

Thanks somebody that actually answered my question :)
It's not that weird to feel this way using public transportation everyday.
Do you guys with full size iPads read them while walking?

You carry around a gun with you?

Its legal and its 2AM. Also you can register your device with the nypd.

I did with my iPad 1.
It's one of the major reasons why I got the mini this time around

I use the subway in Chicago and I came to this post to see what people thought about using it on the subway. I agree with other's comments that iphones and kindles seem to be commonplace but it is pretty rare that I see an ipad. I was hoping I could read the ipad air on the way to work but I'm afraid that I'd be a target for thieves. I agree that situational awareness is key here.

In that case, I can easily imagine why you might feel self-conscious. Nowadays, I rarely ride public transport but when I do, I leave the iPad at home. Even the iPhone stays in my pocket. If I were to use a tablet, it would be something less conspicuous (e.g. Kindle Fire, Nexus 7).

I'd feel more self-conscious about pulling out one of the many Android tablets...

"Is that a new iPa-oh never mind"
*walks away disappointed"

The iPad mini pretty much scrapes the upper limit of what is inconspicuous in public. People can say whatever they want about how they're 'proud' of their full-size iPad and would be ashamed of androids or whatever (get over yourselves), but the fact is that this sentiment exists for a reason...full-size iPads are a bit of a douche-symbol on the train, when taking pictures at a concert, etc - like it or not. It's the same thing when someone uses a full-size Windows or Android tablet, even though those are much less common

A number of people use their iPads on the train of all shapes and sizes and races. You get over yourself calling someone a douche for using their product on the train while riding. Get a grip. Stop making judgements about someone for using the products of their choice. It says more about you calling them names than it says about anyone else.

The same reason it feels weird holding a dinner plate in public.

That's why I never bring my Air with me and have only brought Minis. The full-size iPads are a bit too big to just flash out when you're in a public setting sitting next to people, cramped up on a bus or plane. People certainly do notice, and when I am just trying to read or watch a video, it's certainly not the attention I want.

A Mini won't stand out or be too bulky that it will catch the attention of the corners of other people's eyes.

Plus, you could make yourself the target of thievery if you bring too much attention to your 500 dollar tablet in a public location. That's also why I don't like flashing out anything that would call attention. It's a real risk that has certainly lead to violence and petty crimes before.

When I bought the launch day iPhone, I had people stop me to look at it and talk about it for the first few months.

When I bought the launch day iPad, I had people at university (usually when I had it out) stop me to look at it and talk about it for the first few months. Although many of those responses were negative: "Why did you spend so much on an oversized iPod Touch?!!??" But you could see and hear the jealousy. I work at a university now and see them everywhere among the MacBooks.

Nowadays nobody cares. I imagine if the iWatch is some crazy new form factor then people will talk about it for a few months. I don't feel weird about using the iPad because I don't think about it. It's a tool that I use to accomplish tasks. I only think about it when reading rumors or while I'm obsessively waiting for my new baby rMini to arrive in the mail. Which it finally left Hong Kong today and is relaxin in Alaska.
