Thanks... I guess I missed a check mark somewhere... I will get it working non the less since everyone else has it working. Mr drinking, thank you. I trus your argument and really glad to be wrong. This is after all what I want.

Thank you all.

Yep, all you did was miss a checkmark or two, and pointing iTunes to the right HDD/folder, IT pro. Sux, don't it?

It does... But non the less when you find a solution the hard way, you never forget it. This was tough... But, I am happy non the less...

I guess it was just another ID10T Error... (IDIOT)

A couple of things to understand.

"The majority of which did not have tags, so it was a total mess, as iTunes is hopeless without correct tags."

This is because Windows Media Player (at least the older versions) and other Windows based music players are file-browsing based media players. Many of the older rippers didn't even support mp3 metadata tags.

iTunes is essentially a webkit-based (think Safari and Google Chrome) web browser with some extras. All the information in iTunes is stored in a database file that catalogs the metadata and file locations of all of your media that you "introduce" into iTunes.

This is why iTunes sucks for people who don't have their tags filled out. Not to be too preachy but metadata tags exist for a reason and whatever software you used to rip your music is subpar if it didn't fill out the metadata.
This is not iTunes fault, but the other software's fault.

"I also had to re-code some albums back into MP3 format as iTunes can only see MP3 files"
What format were they? iTunes can use mp3 and mp4/aac (m4a/m4b and Apple Lossless) Some others too with workarounds that I don't bother to use.

I convert all my FLAC files to Apple Lossless (which is a pain sometimes ) but that allows me to stream music to my airport express for the last 7 years and to my 5 month old AppleTV2. These devices have hardware chips to decompress lossless audio.

I always set iTunes to "manually manage music and video" for my iOS devices, then I just drag and drop media instead of having to make and sync playlists.

Sometime if this thread is still around I'll write a long explanation on why Apple limits the formats that iTunes and iOS devices can play.

*Hint*

1 Ensure sure compatibility between devices such as original iPhone and current versions. ie Hardware acceleration support of h.264 video.

2 It's not because they're a bunch of meanies, it all has to do with Hollywood (the record/film industries) and DRM (which at least we got rid of on the music side.)

IF Apple didn't limit the formats, then there would/may have never been an iTunes (music/video) Store, an App Store, and maybe not even iPads, iPhones etc......

iTunes just sucks... Period. I hate it. I just use it to backup and restore. Other than that, I use copy trans manager. Google it. It is a drag and drop application. I have used iTunes since it's inception, and it has never improved.

Man, it just thinks it is smarter than you and that it knows best... Well, I guess it is an apple product. My last straw was that it will not use a network share as a media library. It will let u stream, but in other to sync media to your iOS device, it has to be copied to the computer. I do not want to house the same media in two different places! This was the case on my Mac as I will never install it on my pc(s). Windows media player is just better than iTunes... If apple didn't ry to control everything , their stuff would be better...

Man, I know for some it couldn't be easier, and for them apple did a good job... But, what about us who are smarter and require more power and control? When will we have a real advanced user mode? This is the same for iOS devices. I need a file management system doggone it! They can keep their current granny setup as a default, but let the advanced users get what they need. If apple did that, they would get everyone else who refuse to go their way.........

iTunes HAS to control everything, as it's the center of Apple's entertainment experience. Think about what is sold and managed there:

Music
TV shows
Movies
University lectures
Apps
Video and Audio podcasts (subscriptions)

Can it be improved? Hell yeah.

That's the big reason why they won't totally revamp it until/unless they have a better replacement 100% ready to go. (And to be fair, that better replacement I'm imagining will also control everything).
