Great! Sign me up for one of those, since it's "similarly specced," an therefore come with OS X preinstalled and comes with apple-quality tech support.

What's that you say? It's a random gray box manufacturer in Australia who provides lousy support, and it comes with windows vista ultimate business pro home and student edition preinstalled?

Oh.

Neve mind, then.

That IS nice.

Is that from the Cinda Bloch collection?

I am used to seeing them in gray.

I don't understand. Sorry about my english. What collection do you mean?

This is just a MicroATX case, with simple (minimal) design.

It was a joke, in that he says your ordered case looks like a cinder block. A funny joke, I might add, even though it slags your box. :)

Uhm and even the PC is overpriced. I can build that myself for a lot less. By the way that case is around $600. Who needs a $600 case that sits under a desk.

This is a similar specced pc from Australia vs the MacPro Quad, the Pc is probably slightly better specced as the ram is faster, the case is pretty nice looking as well:

Taking the the time to assemble your own machine makes the DIY approach MORE attractive if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I do enjoy building machines, but simply don't have the time. I can bill my clients from $125 and up per hour. By the time I find, order, build, test, etc. the cost savings have disappeared. And my projects have slipped on the deadlines again  For me its not an option, but for others who have the time and skills, maybe.

The next issue becomes OS X. If you need it, then the whole h@ck1nt0sh can of worms gets opened up. I'm not trolling here, you all do as you please. But I make my living from software I develop, and I certainly don't want to be a hypocrit when I license software to clients and expect them to follow the rules. All of the software on my machines is legally licensed. Just good karma for a guy in my position.

Is the price AUD or USD?

Keep in mind, it uses a Core i7 chip, so no ECC support, which may be a deal breaker for some.

All in all though, it's a nice machine. The case and PSU do drive up the cost, but they're decent. I'm using a different case by Lian Li and the same PSU. I can recycle them easily, so to me, the cost wasn't really an issue. ;)

I have a board that can support ECC, but am using an i7-920 until I can locate a W3570 to utilize the ECC function.

Meh...To each his/her own. ;)

I made the time, as it was necessary (internal RAID). The cost of an external solution with an MP wasn't cost effective. The time necessary cost me in terms of TV viewing, and house work I would have kept up with. No big loss. :p

For some, a ready-made system is the best solution. Particularly if they don't have the time, and don't wish to provide their own service/support, even if they posses the skills needed. ;)

Running a hack is like building you're own machine. Make you're choice, and live with the consequences. ;) :D :p

But at least the concrete block isn't pretending to be anything more than a piece of building material - it structure, hollowness and size all perform a specific function ;)

I'm not quite sure if you are promoting the Mac Pro, the DIY PC, or masonry products in general; but if you get that cinder block to fire up Apple-supported and upgradeable OSX, and I'll slide it under my desk. Far back, mind you.

This well-beaten horse doesn't get any fresher with each processor upgrade. Quantifying the differences without any reasonable valuation of the operating system and bundled software is as accurate as a laser level in an earthquake.

And yes, equating the purchase of a Mac to being a sucker on a Mac-centric forum is trolling.
