Verizon service is not as good as AT&T's in my area.

AT&T has way faster speeds in my area.

Does that help?

I'm not going to read this entire thread but it's not an ATT iPad. It's a global unlocked 3G iPad. Sorry tmobile.

I do have a verizon mifi, but when i could tether my iphone i do and get much better internet experience. When i stay at my lake house ATT really sucks mostly edge, but Verizon is amazing there, so thats the main reason for having both.....each provider has its place, but by and large I have a better experience with ATT.

Remind me why people buy AT&T iPads?? The difference in 3G coverage is ridiculous.

Post of the century! There are no excuses. You live in a big city and you have WiFi. I went with the best choice: better 3G coverage.

So when do you AT&T folks want to travel with me? You do t want to live on the EDGE. You can borrow my VZW iPad and watch NetFlix in BFE. Let's go!

It's okay. When you're in Asia, Europe, or Australia, you can borrow my AT&T iPad because your VZW iPad won't even have 1G connectivity.

By the way, others have already posted more up-to-date 3G coverage maps from AT&T that demonstrate that AT&T coverage is damn near that of Verizon's.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_6 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E200 Safari/6533.18.5)

Some people don't have good Verizon coverage where they live and if I'm not mistaken the AT&T iPads can be unlocked because AT&T uses sim cards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to further discourage pointless banter, comparing an AT&T iPad 1 with a Verizon iPad 2, is for lack of a better word, asinine. LMFAO!

People live in different places and one or the other works best for that particular person, or they didn't have a choice when they opted to buy a used one. Either way, who cares?! You are all on the internet with it, that's all that matters. Having one is fortunate enough, stop bitching and moaning and/or telling people your iPad is better! We all got jacked by apple, so move on.

Happy surfing!

I bought the White 64Gb Wifi 3G AT&T as personal and business choice. I have a Verizon Card for my laptop that doesn't preform all that well, and I will probably be canceling the Verizon service.

Capitalism is great in that it offers individuals a choice, and AT&T was my choice.

It is different every where. I chose Verizon because ATT's coverage is total crap in San Francisco. My VZ 3G is fast.

The GSM argument is funny because how often do people travel internationally? Why buy something you can't use at home so you can use it for two weeks while out of the country (I know there are some that travel a lot more than that)? Plus, it's not like you're not going to find WiFi every where is this day and age.

I bought the plan to test it and will cancel when my month is up.

Well, for me it's because ATT data speed is at least 4-5 times as fast as VZW.

And FWIW, that map is NOT correct. I just retrieved this one from ATT web site and it's far different from the one you have:

Maybe you're just trolling?

Ditto. data speeds at the very least are 3-4 faster on at&t than on verizon for me in my area. I have a verizon company phone (droid x) and an iPhone for personal use. So, I test this all the time

Like others have said, it's different for everyone. Don't take the "if you travel, AT&T won't work". Everywhere I've travelled it's generally fine if not faster than where I live. Some places have poor 3G speeds at even full bars but others (Denver and Orlando in my experience) are really good for 3G speeds. But if you have an experience where in your area Verizon's is faster, it's not indicative of everywhere just as the opposite isnt. Everyone depending on where they are at will have different experiences.

How about comparing this:

To the population density of the US:

For a large majority of the people....they are not only covered by AT&T, but most times AT&T speeds are faster.

Thats true, but once you get out of metro area in alot of places you drop down to edge. I noticed when I had my ipad 3g that 10 miles outside of Nashville, my ipad would drop out of 3G. Verizon and Sprint dont do this. They blanket the interstate with 3G. On a trip from Nashville to Atlanta, 80% of travel is on the edge network, which is lame.

I care more about the destination than the road trip and all my dedtinations have faster 3G. Loved verizon when I had them, but I love my 3G speeds now.

Also I was certain I was going with the verizon iPad, but the new updates to ATT's 3G coverage convinced me to go ATT. My brother's verizon data speeds on his droidX drove me insane when I was playing with his phone. The drive, his speed was better, the destination where we spent a week compared to a few hours on the road, not even close.

Keep in mind everyone's real world experience is different. Once iPhone goes 4G all probably switch back since VZW is far ahead of ATT on the 4G front

That map is also out of date. ATT coverage has expanded since those commercials and is supposed to expand again ny the end of the month

All the blue, light or dark, is going to be 3G coverage by summer. The expansion took care of 97% of my 3G concerns. I can tough out the 3% that's Edge. Plus ATT is open about poor coverage on their websites map. Verizon's map doesn't distinguish between 1 bar and 5 bars on the voice map.

Just a note on those light blue chunks: Those were divested by Verzion and purchased by AT&T as part of the FCC's requirements to Verizon in regards to their acquisition of Alltel.

That map can't be right. I live in Michigan, and get ATT 3G service when I'm up north...far further north than what they have marked on that map.

also, for people living in an area that is covered well by 3G, and who will mostly travel to areas covered by 3G, ATT is the faster alternative. Speed maters even more so on an iPad than on a phone...its all about what is more important for you

Maybe you're just trolling?

Is that supposed to be a 3G map? Or just a map where they offer service, even if just 2G?

When I bought my iPad, there were no Verizon models. So THAT is why I bought the ATT version :)

If I was buying an iPad now, I would seriously consider the Verizon model. Slower, but more usable when on vacations in the west. The limitations of the Verizon model are that it is slower (compared to ATT 3G areas, faster than ATT 2G areas), and no simultaneous voice and data, which doesn't apply for the iPad.

I'll continue to skip generations, at a minimum, unless I do something like lose or break my existing model. I skip the original iPhone and the 3GS version. And plan to skip whatever model they release this year (5? 4G?)

If there is anything I fault about the iPad is the screen glare. In certain environments, it can be hard to see or I get distracting reflections.

Simple: Verizon avg download speed: 300kbps with 3G. Att average: 3000kbps. Verizon is too slow and the 3g doesn't penetrate buildings well. Comparision with my friends verizon iphone vs mine.

FCC speed test:
iPhone 4, 2.99Mbps/down, .86Mbps/up
iPad 1, 1984kbps/down, 266 kbps/up

At my home in Oklahoma.

Worldwide coverage >>>>> Verizon coverage.

Which only matters if you travel outside the US. I bet you would be shocked at the number of people who even rarely travel out of state.

I've been to Canada twice, and in the latter case, a prepaid CDMA phone had better coverage than my ATT GSM phone did in the Idaho, BC, and nearby areas.
