Why do people get envious like this?

It depends how envious. I doubt people are that envious, like I do like your mac pro with its double 30inch screens, it would be nice if I could have one but to be honest I don't really need it as all I use my macbook for is myspace.

Let's say a 2.0GHz PowerMac G5 owner with a 20" Cinema Display. His best friend buy a 3.2GHz Mac Pro with two 30" Cinema Displays. Wouldn't the first person be a little bit envious of his friend?

Correct. I don't think anyone is so seriously eaten up by envy.
