The iPad devalues the laptop that you currently have.

I mean, for 300-600 bucks more, your laptop could be even more powerful.

If I bought an ipAd for 500 bucks, that would make my laptop collect more dust.

The iPad is limited in what it can do, but its stellar for consuming media.

Spending that extra money on a laptop won't make it any better at being an ipad. I'd far rather have a less expensive laptop and an ipad than just a laptop.

Depends on how you use it. If you're content with primarily consuming media, that's what you'll use it for. If you have a curious mind, you'll discover a host of different uses for the iPad. The iPad's potential is only limited by its owner.

Why do you buy underwear? Why not put that extra $10 towards your trousers purchase?

the iPad can do much was are as creating. I've heard the keyboards aren't that great. Pages, Word, typing, etc...

As you can see in my sig, I bought the highest end of the 15-inch rMBP and cost me a pretty penny. I ordered it on Christmas Day of 2013. A couple of days later, after having much thought, I ordered my rMini. My laptop is mainly used for writing, watching movies, web surfing (I also bought it because I need it for school - I intend on going back in the Fall; took three years off). The iPad is essentially used for reading books (I bought over 100 books through the iBook app and i was reading through my iPhone 5 for a while before I realized that the screen size just wasn't enough for me, so I had to get something bigger), playing games, for the portability (it goes with me when I leave the house; the rMBP stays home), and just for the comfort of use (I use it before bed after my rMBP is put to rest). There are plenty of reasons why a person owns a laptop and a tablet, be it apple or not. I used to think it was ridiculous that a person would own an iPhone, an iPad, and an iPod all at once, but now I know that they had their reasons for it. Did I spend a lot of money? Yes, yes I did. Do I regret it? No. I work hard for my money and I saved up a lot over the past few years. I figured I deserved to buy myself a late Christmas gift, especially after the year I've gone through.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess you typed this on your iPad. ;) This forum is littered with auto-incorrects... luckily we all speak Apple.

I agree with you... Typing/Pages/Word are not better suited to an iPad than a MacBook. It is, however, better than trying to perform those tasks on an iPhone.

I guess I just don't understand why people have really nice laptops and an iPad.

seems expensive to just have a handheld web browser.

For me they are two different devices. Ipad does some stuff, laptop does others. I have no problem spending my money on me. I deserve it more than anything else because I earned it.

Technically, the differences make them both a joy to use.

My MBP is too heavy for me to use for reading while I'm lying in bed. It'd also be awkward to use while I'm eating dinner at my kitchen table. It's also a lot easier to travel light with an iPad than with a notebook.
My $0.02

I was thinking about getting an iPad before i bought my macbook. Now, I have a laptop for all my computing needs.

Is getting a 300-600 dollar device just to consume some media a good use of money?
Because its my money, period. I have bought desktops, laptops, an iPad and iPhones, each has a use for me. All depends on what you do and what is important to you. For me, desktops and laptops are for creating/producing stuff, while iPads and iPhones are for consuming data, simple as that.

For me it's worth having the 2 devices to psychologically switch me off from work.

My 15" rMBP is used in the office and in meetings in and around Melbourne, Australia.

When I get home I like to browse my usual blogs, tweet, read Facebook, check out sports videos etc (all consumption). The iPad smalles, less consuming in terms of its form factor and if I'm on my iPad then my wife knows it's play and not work so she'll distract me and chat etc

If I have my laptop to do this then I'm in 'work mode' and am tempted to just check the odd email or run my eyes over that report.

An iPad has huge intangible value for me. Well worth the price in addition to my rMBP.

I have both, ipad is more portable and easy to use, video, magazines, newspapers etc. Macbook for pro programs, photo editing, typing docs, connecting to work and do it, connecting larger monitors, running Windows vm :) etc

Really this isn't that hard to understand
I have a rMBP for all my work stuffs (Final Cut, Captivate, Office, Fusion/Win8, etc)
I have an iPad Mini for other stuffs (meetings, iBooks, airplane, etc)

Both devices do what they do quite well... and with Dropbox and Evernote I share between them most everything I need

Not everyone can justify having both devices
I can... easily

Oh, and I have an iPhone 5 too, so I guess that is also wrong... we should limit ourselves to 1 device?

An iPad is much more portable. I regularly take my iPad mini out with me but very rarely take my laptop out with me. Even at home it's much more convenient to use my iPad than it is to use my laptop. The laptop is heavy and takes time to boot up. The iPad is light and ready to go. If I want to watch TV in bed, but don't want to have the TV on I can use my iPad. When I wake up in the morning, if I want to quickly check my emails, check something on the net, all I need to do is reach for my iPad/iPhone. I use my iPad every day,but my laptop gets used much less. I probably use my laptop now a few times a month.

If your iPad can replace your laptop then you really did not need a computer in the first place.

Not an option for me as I need Office, Quickbooks Pro on Windows and AutoCad.

PC for business (no choice on this one)
Mac for home photos/photoshop/lightroom etc
iPad rMini for travel and reading at home

I can easily use my MBA in the toilet... dont understand why some people find it too difficult and prefer the ipad :p

I also find it more relaxing to use my MBA when lying on the bed/sofa cause the keyboard works like a stand... in the other hand when using the 10 inch ipad your hands after some time will get tired.

When i went on vacations i enjoyed a lot using MBA compared to my iPad (i had in the past) where with the lack of open file system there is no way to download my favorite tv shows except if i ll jailbreak it which i dont want/care... and dont tell me dude you are on vacations why the hell did you download movies/tv shows etc... you could load your ipad with tvshows/movies if u wanted to watch some during your vacations... thats not the answer... ios is till limited compared to mac os.

The only benefit i have with my iPad is when reading iBooks due to retina screen which is a lot better and more relaxing compared to the MBA's.

The ideal device for me will be an even lighter MBA with retina screen....

Also i cannot understand why people cant use their iPhone 5/5s to check an email, quickly surf one or two web pages, skype, listen internet radio and even watch internet tv..... i even read ibooks on my iphone 5S and i dont find it as a compromise... iPads are wonderful devices but for me life is even more wonderful and i dont want so many devices distract me and "waste" most of my time on the Internet. MBA and iPhone 5S is enough for my needs.

For me it was, but I can't tell if it will be a good use of your money for your needs.

I use it to read, especially relaxing on the couch, or on the subway as I head into work. Yeah in I could use my rMBP for those two things, but would I really want too.

I also use it to hold my karate notes, and other documents that I need quick access too.

My kids also take my iPad as I drive to play games and watch youtube or listen to pandora. Again for my needs its a great device that works better then a laptop for those tasks.

I sold my iPad and got myself a 11" Macbook Air. It does everything I want it to when I am on the road. When at home I mainly use my iMac. An iPad is more like a "nice to have but don't really need" device.

There you go. I've been touting the 11" MBA as the ultimate iPad killer but of course when you're in an iPad fanboy zone... you're wrong. :)

Next, sell that iMac and just get a nice external monitor for that MBA11. They're big and cheap these days.

Personally, I can't think of any reason for an iPad myself (even though I have one). Yes, it has data capabilities (and the MBA doesn't) but I can use my iPhone for connectivity to the outside world when needed.
