Why do people say the S models are just minor upgrades?

Well now you're just trying too hard to make your point. The screen size bump for the 6 models are the biggest Apple "feature" ever. A bigger screen may not have changed how the phone functioned but being able to see your phone definitely changed how people used them.
It depends what you consider a 'new feature' I love the bigger screen sizes on the 6 and 6 Plus but I don't actually consider it a new feature as its the same feature we had before just bigger. Something like force touch and touch ID are brand new technologies that haven't been on a previous iPhone.

4 didnt give Retina?
5 didnt give LCD size and Airdrop and LTE.?
6 didnt give LCD size and NFC and ApplePay?
If you read my post fully you'd see I said since the iPhone 4's retina screen, I also mentioned in a further post that I had forgotten the NFC in the 6.
I've already discussed how I don't consider a new/different screen size a proper new feature. I don't think features like Airdrop are on the same level as the upgrades we've gotten in the S models. LTE is obviously massive but it wasn't really that accessible at launch (In the UK only one network had 4G for ages and coverage was limited to city centre locations in only the biggest cities) so it wasn't really something to get excited about over here for quite a long time after the 5 launched.
Similarly the reason I forgot NFC was because Apple Pay wasn't available at launch over here, so like LTE it wasn't something to get excited over when getting the new phone.

A lot of people are shallow. They only notice that which is visible externally. But let's face it, there's only so much you can do with a rectangle. I'll take the S cycle every time around.

I don't think it matters the year there is always some haters. I'm not upgrading to the 6s because I like the two year cycle I'm on. I've certainly thought of upgrading to the 6s but I'm going to wait (hopefully). I hope the 6s people enjoy their phones and I look forward to those features next year. I am glad they aren't like launching several models throughout the year. One new model a year is enough to make me a little envious but the 6 is still a good phone even if a year old.

I completely agree. The S models also give no reason to the next model (unless you want a new iPhone every year). Me personally I learned my lesson when I got the 5 and my sister got the 5s. Since I do 2 year contracts I wanted the s model so bad because the features were better. So now I'm just going to upgrade when the s model announces, unless apple does away with the s model and puts all the improvements and stuff onto one model.

And those are the same kinds of reasons that some others would see S versions as nothing much.

I like the S models better as they have fixed most of the problem by the time they appear... Like a case not strong enough! Each to their own I say...

Most people put down the "s" model to try to make themselves feel better for owning the number only model. Most like the number only model just because the case is different and they feel better having a phone that does not look like everyone else's.

The 4 introduced retina display, the 5 enlarged the screen for a bit, and the 6 enlarged the screen a lot. It's quite interesting to see what will they do about the iPhone 7 since the screen can't be enlarged anymore. Maybe making it less slippery?

So additional ram and slightly better camera is a major update?

Oh come on.... 3D touch is pretty big, as is 2gb ram.... And a 4k 30fps capable sensor is not a slight upgrade.

But it's ok you don't have to buy it. You can continue to convince yourself it's not an upgrade too in order to curb the upgrade sensation you are having.

I buy the S model because those upgrades offer the major performance improvements. The iPhone 6 isn't much faster than the iPhone 5S so why spent so much money on it when they will be outdated around the same time due to lack of power.
The only reason that the performance lagged a bit was beacsue apple did not increase the ram for the first time on a non s model. Between the RAM and higher resolution the performance ofvthe 6 was never going to leap over the 5s.

Looking back I like the iPhone 5, it was like a numbered model and an S model at the same time. Big power increase, new features and hardware, plus a new design. I hope the 7 is something similar, as opposed to the iPhone 4 or 6 which have more in common.

I did the s upgrades with the 3GS and 4s.
The last few s upgrades had me yawning though:)

Because most humans are superficial creatures who are too lazy to think. Their logic says "if it looks the same on the outside, then nothing must have changed"

Not sure that rally applies to most, some, sure, most, not so sure.

look at the 5s verses the 6. They're completely different phones.

Apple follows a similar tick tock that Intel uses.

The tick is the re-design
The tock is the refresh

A re-design phones are the non-s phones. The refresh are the S phones.

The iphone 7 is going to be a redesign of the iphone.

I personally prefer the refresh phones because they're more refined.

So often I see people on here stating that the S model iPhones are only a minor upgrade and they are going to wait for the next 'properly new' iPhone. It's actually the S models that introduce the major new technologies such as Siri, Touch ID and now Force Touch that actually change the way we use our phones.
The new number models haven't had a major new feature since the iPhone 4's retina screen, it's always a new physical design with a new processor and the usual upgrade to the camera.
The new sizes of the 6 were so new to iPhone users that everyone seemed to overlook the fact that there weren't actually any new features or technology.
I always upgrade every year but I always think of the S models as the bigger upgrade.

OP, I agree with you. The 5S and 6S actually made me much more intrigued by the phones than the 5 and 6 releases. Most people who say the opposite are usually Apple haters, who are blind and are like "ugh its da seim nwe ipheun evry yr andriods beter".

Hopefully they do design it to be a bit more ergonomical, but I do feel like they can improve on the screen size. It is possible to fit a 5" screen in the same body as the 6/6S, and then slap a 5.7" display in the same 6+/6S+ body. I hope that either comes to fruition, or they decide to just make the phone physically smaller, while keeping the same screen size. If that happens I will jump back on the plus train with a 7S+; as my 6+ is just not to my liking for physical friendliness.
