Because the invite says to come see what they have for iOS and OS X. Did you read it?

Yes I did.

What I'm saying is when has WWDC logo represent a radically change in Apple's product/interface designs?

WWDC logo evolution

WWDC 2006 & 2007 were pretty similar with Apple logo, WWDC06/07 and a dark background.

WWDC 2009 & 2010 were pretty similar. No Apple logo and huge WWDC title with apps.

WWDC 2011 has the apps design from WWDC 2010 but has a new huge Apple logo that is made up of apps.

WWDC 2012 has the Apple logo design from WWDC 2011 but no longer has apps and now just blank, colorful icons. Plus it has no background.

WWDC 2013 has the color blank icon design from WWDC 2012 and also has no background.

What I'm saying is none of them is radically different from the previous one. All incorporate somethings from the old ones and add some new layer of design.

I dont think the WWDC 2013 logo is an accurate representation of what to expect in iOS 7. I mean I want a new UI but supper skinny text and then a slew of bright, rainbow colored icons.

iPhone 5 for WWDC 2011?

I mean saying the icon looks different = updated iOS UI is like saying I see a 5 in the logo = iPhone 5 early update.

Apple doesn't really give hints at what to expect for WWDC with their logo, its more for their product events. For example iPhone 5 and the 5 shadow.

Rumors of a cheap iPhone have been swirling for years, but with the passing of Steve Jobs—he insisted on the highest quality—there's a good chance a low-end iPhone will now hit the market. CEO Tim Cook is a more traditional business executive than his predecessor and will likely go the route that the market dictates. This means a cheap iPhone will counter the costs of Android phones, as well as push into second-tier markets. It's also possible a cheap iPhone could be available in addition to a super-charged iPhone 5S release.

Your missing WWDC 08 Invite Twin Golden Gate Bridges.
The First WWDC to cover iPhone OS not just Mac OS X.
That was the shift in design and was a one off.

From WWDC 09 invite it was about the app Icon and has been since then. They've just become more and more abstract and more about the Apple logo.
It's hard to imagine the design could be any more abstract next year in both the app or the Apple iconery.

That said this years design has a high feeling of freshness compared to the past, even if it is following the theme.

What that says about what will be revealed is anyones guess.

It also helps that Gruber and Ritchie have stated that they've heard there's going to be a system-wide UI change. Either way, whether they tone down UI theming or not, I just want more functionality.

To be fair, Apple did mention that both Mac OS X and iPhone OS would be shown. Obviously it was representing the split between Mac OS X and iPhone OS. It made sense.

From WWDC 09 invite it was about the app Icon and has been since then. They've just become more and more abstract and more about the Apple logo.

And yes I do agree this year's logo looks quite different, I just don't think it accurately represent the changes we will see in iOS 7.

The WWDC 2013 logo also isn't completely different than the WWDC 2012 logo.

Many are people are calling the WWDC 2013 logo radically different than anything before which confirms a new radically different UI in iOS 7 which I pointed out a few flaws. We saw the UI changes of the Podcast app. So expect more of that than anything else.

While I do think that the WWDC will feature a radical iOS design change (which I do hope will happen), whether that change influenced the design of the logo or not, or whether the design implications are unintentional or not do not matter me.

Which is what I'm saying. Every year new iOS gets released and no major. UI changes.

But no other year had the SVP of iOS sacked over the crap quality the initial iOS version release and replaced by a party of folks including a newly set up SVP for interface design who is known to have publicly said that he hates skeuromorphic designs.

THAT is why everyone is saying that the UI is going to change. And why they are taking the logo with it's flatness to be a confirmation that they are correct

You forget one thing. Phil Schiller, in this Cook run Apple, panned the rumors saying that Apple doesn't build things to be cheap.

Are you seriously suggesting that they are alike? Can't you see that there is a huge change in the logo this year?
...

Different Font

...

OMG, a different font?!!?! Apple must be becoming a whole new company and have a lot of stuff up their sleeve all because they used a different font!

Forstall wasn't ousted for the UI design or a crappy iOS 6, he was ousted partially for his personality and handling of Maps. It got to a tipping point after he would not sign the apology letter.

If you think his being a dick was all that got him fired I've got a bridge for you. He would have been fired before Steve was cold in the grave if being a dick was all it was about because Forstall acted that way under Steve. It was loyalty for the folks that stood by him at NeXT that saved Forstall when Steve was around

Being a dick got him on the radar, releasing a crap iOS 6 got him on the firing line and the refusal to take one for the team and apologize for Maps pulled the trigger.

I personally think he had too much on his plate. Question is did he con Steve into thinking he could handle iOS, Siri and maps? Or was it more of a power grab trying to create his own fiefdom within Apple?

The way Cook has structured things now makes much more sense than the silos created under Jobs. Much less likely to have turf wars when everyone is collectively responsible for all products.

Where did I say that?

I said his personality was partially the problem.

But his personality didn't matter when Steve Jobs was around because lets be honest, Jobs was also didn't have the greatest personality.

However it did matter in a post-Jobs era with Cook. People are more critical of Apple now without Jobs so any bad move would hurt Apple more.

Also if iOS 6 didn't get leaked so much, people would be more excited. People think its crap because Apple didn't announce anything new.

Who said that? If you bothered to read the entire post rather than just snip the bits out where you think you can get a cheap laugh based on my comments you'll see that nowhere did I insinuate that the WWDC logo indicates a change in iOS, I merely made a list of things that made the logo radically different from previous years. That is factual - this thin font has never been used in Apple marketing material in the past.

Lets be real here.

For a company as secretive as apple, even internally among its own ranks, do you guys really think the marketing guy who made this logo already knows what a prereleased version of iOS 7 looks like? Probably not.

Truth is, that marketing guys job is exactly to get people to talk about the logo and come up with these (crazy) theories until the event. It generates free publicity.

I do think that it does imply a change in design, and here's why. Apple knows that we've been expecting a change in the UI for a while. They purposefully made the invitation look different from the past in order to fuel the speculation.

Will the UI look similar to the invitation? Maybe in a very minor way. They still want it to be a surprise when they announce it. I think it will only come apparent to us what this graphic is referencing after we see iOS 7. It's noticeably different from the past, but still cryptic. I think it makes sense when you think more meta about it. If you we're apple, how would you make the invitation to this event?

To me the logo looks like shaking icons behind it. Like we're here to change things up this year! I hope so anyways!

To me it looks like a UICollectionView stack of icons like you see in the photo browser. That view container would sure make a nice replacement to Paged UIScrollView they use now.

Maybe do away with folders have stacks of icons with the top icon being the last used item from the stack. Single tap opens the top icon, double tap opens the stack.

WWDC 2013
WWDC 2012
WWDC 2011

Some say its colorful and looks like icons which could hint at an iOS revamp but WWDC 2012 logo was colorful and was made up of these squares too.

Only thing that looks different is 1) No Apple logo 2) XIII instead of 13

But lets be honest, people know is about Apple because it literally says 'Apple Worldwide Developer Conference' at the bottom and I think most people know the year is 2013.

Also read this article for some good laughs.

Most likely we'll see some changes to the UI for iOS (nothing to radical) but the logo is just Apple getting creative. Tbh there previous ones were basically either showing a ton of apps or an apple logo. Plus they need a good laugh at all those people ciphering the hidden code of the WWDC logo.

It looks more like a TV for me :)

I don't know. Some have already started 'decoding' it as a code for the iWatch!
