There was a factor thrown into the argument that I didn't really think about, because I'm not a student. (I just noticed this.)

Yes, if you're a student, obviously buying now with the free iPod is worth it. But the original post wasn't about students; it was simply asking why people are so concerned about paying $129 for Leopard. And that's where my comment was being made.

If you're not a student, then it is a little better to wait, but not by much. However, if your hardware is not working, then there's no point in waiting.

This is why I'm waiting. Apple computers aren't upgradeable (besides ram and HD and the mac pro). So I'd rather wait and buy the best technology I can that will last me a long time rather than buy a dying technology which won't.

All of this is very true. Again, for non-student buyers, this is a lot of money. Some software or other accessories could be bought with $200+ worth. Although I feel it's fair to point out that many more people probably want Leopard rather than iLife. I think a comparison using $130 is more accurate. Either way, it's a lot of money.

One thing to factor is that when leopard comes pre installed on new machines, you will not be able to backtrack to tiger. If leopard has bugs, which any new OS will have, your stuck to Apple fixes the issues.Given the track record of late, i am glad to have a great SR MBP that has more than enough horsepower and can be updated when i want to, not because Apple lockd me into an upgrade.

That's why one should wait for a month after Leopard before buying the softwware licesnse or a new computer.

There are always other options. I personally decided to wait, hoping for 17" LEDs, as well as to see if Leopard indeed does have a resolution independent UI (anyone know if it is going to have this) which will help me decide which resolution to get. I personally just got a souped up HP from Costcos to hold me over until october (90 return policy;)), and if i decide to wait longer I'll get another one from Sam's club (6 month return policy). A few month wait in comparison to how long I'm going to be using the MBP for (the rest of college, and after), it is really not that hard of a choice.

a lot of people wait months and months to buy a computer so they can save, what, $130 on an operating system? i'd rather buy the computer now. having a computer and using for the months in between it is certainly worth the $130 in so-called savings. it isn't like a tiger-based mac with ilife 06 is outdated. i don't need my time machine now, or my core animation or spaces. tiger suits me fine, and a savings in $130 isn't worth it to wait nearly a year for a new computer.

It is for some people...I'm sure some people don't need the new Mac, and their current one works fine.

I can't see why people, for a a moment, would think that people shouldn't wait...IF THEY WANT. Its a personal choices money vs time....there is no right or wrong way to go about it.

I agree theirs no right or wrong answer!, the original poster has been informed why people do wait for the OS and iLife updates. It doesn't matter if anyone agrees with them. I personally have been waiting for a while for Leopard, I personally couldn't justify spending the extra £'s for the upgrade if I can get them both free (hopefully) by October. I wish I was in a financial position to not have to worry about that but I have student loans to pay off...

People who employ tactics like that are the reason behind Costco's return policy change. The policy was never meant to allow you to keep returning prodcuts, essentially "renting" them for free. Eventually, this will catch up to you, and stores will simply not want to do business with you. Just suck it up and buy one.

I don't understand why everybody doesn't just do the same as everybody else – why do some people have one set of needs and values and others a completely different set? What's going on? Why is none of this oblivious? Let's all argue until it's resolved.

LOL. Love it! But seriously, I think you mean "obvious" and not "oblivious":)

I'm waiting, just to save that $129.

Is $129 a lot of money? No. But, when the Mac Book Pro itself will cost $3300, I just spent $4000 on a Mac Pro 5 months ago, I'll have to spend $129 on Leopard for the Mac pro, $129 become a lot of money.

Not to mention that Office will be released around the same time (more $$). Then you have iLife. If they release Leopard with a new version of iLife, I'll buy the new version for the Mac Pro, and would have to buy it for the Mac Book Pro.

Let's also factor in that I use a laptop a grand total of maybe 5 times/year, and I have a full-loaded Windows laptop that works just fine, and it makes sense for me to wait.

I guess it all comes down to how badly you need (or want) the new computer. The one I'm waiting on is merely something to fall back on in case I have to work while on vacation.

...because they dont understand the concept that there will always be something better around the corner and that waiting and waiting doesnt do you any good. (unless of course you only have to wait a day or two)

I'd like to add...

Many of us "switchers" have had very bad experiences with OS upgrades in the past. The idea of getting a clean, tested factory install of the newer OS is also appealing to us.

Thanks for contributing to increasing mine and everyone else's Costco membership fees. May you get stuck in an *extra* long checkout line next time you shop there. Then again, maybe using Vista is punishment enough...

For me it's not just the software update, but i assume there will be hardware update coming up as well. So getting new model laptop, new OS and even iLife at once, would be just brilliant.

This year i've had 5 mac's already.. iMac (G3 400), iMac (G3 350), ibook (G4 12" 1.2), Powerbook (G4 17") and iMac (G3 350) so i think i can wait :p
