ok so my macbook air hinge made a cracking noise while my sister as using it. it is still in warranty and they do not want to fix it because there is a little nitch one inch away from the hinge. and say that damage impacted the macbook air and that is why the hinge broke. they want to charge me 750 dollars. that scratch has been there since i got the macbook air. but they wouldn't believe me! now i am going to go to another apple store, should i tell them that the dent accrued after the hinge broke? should i tell them that i was trying to fix the hinge with a screwdriver and it slipped and hit the corner.? i know i would be lying but i just need this hinge fixed! i really dont have easy access to a apple store so if i go again to another one i really dont want to come back disappointed. thanks guys

Dont say anything about the dent. I had a similar situation were I had the distorted screen and one corner had a dent and apple blamed the issues on the dent. I didnt say anything about the dent to the genuis and when he said something about it I told him its a documented issue and the dent had nothing to do with it and he agreed. Definetly dont tell them you caused it with a screwdriver.

I'd just print out the Apple document that says it's a known issue, and take it to the store. Paper in your hand gives you a giant advantage in negotiating.

    I wouldn't lie.

I had orignally sent it into applecare and they are the ones who told me the dent caused it but then I went to the apple store and told them my story and the guy agreed with me. From what other people have send on hear is that since the stores are always so crowded if you even become a little loud and ask to speak to a manager they seem to accomodate you more since they dont want you causing a scene. Try that if the guy wont budge.

Like she says -- This is a known MBA defect

This problem (hinge breaks) is very well known and affects all Airs sooner or later. I'd try another store if it's just a personality problem.

alright well i just got off the phone and they said that they would send a box to get it fixed. should i go to another store and try my luck? which would be a better idea? sending it in or going to the store? the guy on the phone said there is no garantee that they will fix it for free, if i send it in. :(

To fix a hinge? That's frightening.

I'm sure they'll fix it, but if it does need some sort of payment, they'll call you and ask you if you want to pay. If you don't, they'll just send your computer back.

absolutely. call 'em and tell them as politely/sweetly as you can how thrilled you are with the repair work and the promptness and politeness of the service rendered, however … 'it has come back to me with this blemish that I find to be most distracting and will no doubt affect the resale value when comes the time to upgrade to a new Air; etc etc' - or words to that effect.

known as the 'kiss' principle which can be followed by the 'kick' principle if need be.

whereas to lead with a 'kick' is to give you nowhere to go
