I have gmail, O2, Mobileme, and my sky emails all synced in there, also macrumors, appleinsider, bbc, apple, and seriesgringas on RSS :)

It makes for quite a good RSS reader :)

I've never really used Mail as an RSS reader... think I might give that a go!

because its there, quick, easy, compatible and better than outlook or windows live mail or whatever rubbish they provide for windoze nowadays. :apple:

As for the discussion on multiple accounts’ inboxes, a picture is worth a thousand words:

I tried using it as an RSS reader, but I prefer NNW for the sync capabilities.

It's fascinating how everyone uses Mail. I'm looking to learn from you folks, and perhaps find some way to fit it into my needs. Love the feedback, please keep it coming!!!

I'm not sure there's a right/wrong answer. Personally I like having my email locally. I use mail over entourage because of the better integration with gmail and with other Apple apps.

I've been on OS X since 2005. I have never ever used Mail. I simply connect directly to GMail. I'm happy with the GMail interface. I like the way it works. I never used any email client. Soon I'll be using SL (I'll be buying a mini). I thought this might be an opportunity to get acquainted with the various apps in OS X that I have never used.

So...

Can you please tell me, why do you use Mail, rather than do the direct web access to f.ex. GMail. TIA!

Because I don't like everything existing only in the "cloud". I like having my mail available for me in a desktop application if I'm not online. Same goes for my photos and office documents.

I use them both. I have a general purpose gmail account that I use for account signups, school, contacts that are not friends. I like being able to access my gmail account from any computer. Then I use mail for my personal email and business accounts. I like that I can setup filters to have mail routed to folders. For example, if you have a client that you get regular mail from that needs a quick response, you can set up a folder just for them and have a specific alert sound trigger whenever you get mail from them.

I have also on occasion found gmail to be slow loading. With mail, I just look in my dock and it tells me that I have a message waiting. With gmail, if I have a mail notice (I use the widget), I have to go to the website to read it. I could set up a gmail account on my mail app, but there are a lot of messages that I'd rather leave on google mail server than download to my computer. Last I check my gmail account, I had over 7 thousand messages and half of them were never read and I didn't get around to deleting them.

I have an abject (irrational?) fear of "tha cloud". I keep all my data locally, except when I specifically want it public, or on a setup I pay for - meaning, in this case, shared hosting for my mail (IMAP). I don't trust large corporations whose methods of making money are, essentially, using your data to sell you stuff.

The only 'cloud' I'd in any way wish to trust with my data would be MobileMe (due to it being a paid service), and just for syncing (not for 'ultimate' storage - I'd keep my own backups, thanks!) - which would be overkill for my needs at the moment, given I only have one Mac, and one iPod touch. iTunes syncing works great for now.

...Maybe I'm just paranoid, or maybe time will vindicate my beliefs.

Err. What this is all intended to say, is that this is why I like Mail.app, and all the related apps (Address Book, iCal, etc.). It keeps my data under my control. I also dislike webapps, but that's more for the interfaces being inconsistent and not always available.

Its powerful, readily available, easy to use and i don't have to launch a browser to check my mail. I hate browser based apps. I can't remember the last time i went to Gmail/AOL sites

Gmail(s)
Yahoo
MobileMe
Exchange/work
etc...

Everything in one place, very good. I use it because it's there.

May be pointless for just two gmail accounts, but for someone like me for that uses 8+ accounts it's a great tool.

If you use Mail, does email actually get saved onto your HD or is it just viewable or a combination of those two?

because the searching is instant. I keep every email I've ever gotten (about 8000 a year) and can find pretty much anything extremely fast. Dealing with attachments is also far superior to using a browser.

Also, the little things, like the notification badges on apple+tab and the dock.

How do you get Yahoo to work? I googled around and I found that you needed to pay (and it does not support IMAP)...

3 gmail accounts in mail + expose = happiness for me.

Quick and easy!... I can delete every mail I get there and it doesnt delete it from the Gmail website. So basically I still have a backup online... :D

of course to use multiple mail accounts. But also it makes it easier to just sync mail accounts over when you have an iPhone.

Although I might post this in a separate thread, is there a way to have it so when Mail syncs my Yahoo (pop) mail, that it won't automatically mark them as "read" on the Yahoo mail website?

Mail

Its there, it works quickly and efficiently, why go to the bother of downloading software. If it is not broken why try to fix it?:)

I've been on OS X since 2005. ... I never used any email client.
You never used email before 2005? Or you've never used a desktop email client? Or you've only used email since the advent of webmail?

I've used Unix / VAX email clients (elm & pine and their ilk). I've used desktop clients (Eudora, Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail). And I've used webmail (Gmail, Yahoo, and SquirrelMail).

A few years ago, I began using webmail: Google is my Spam filter. All email is forwarded to my Gmail account, and is then downloaded to my desktop client. I've found using a webclient for spam filtering is more effective and easier than the desktop solutions.

But for actually reading and writing email, I prefer the desktop app. And generally, I like "real" apps over webapps. I also like having my local copy of email that is stable, regardless of what email provider I use (and I've used a few over the years).

But that's at home, on my Mac. At work, I use Gmail and/or the Google Desktop to access my personal email.

For me webmail lacks where as I gain flexibility with mail. I prefer it over using a webmail client.

I don't have a gmail email account but I use mobileme and mail works great with that email. I also have a couple of other email accounts and it would be a pain to log out of one webmail client, and into another one (or just open multiple webmail clients).

If you only use gmail and like the webmail client of that, then there is little reason for mail but for me, it suits my needs.
