Forget the rest of thread. THIS is the question I want answered: Why?

G-Mail's web interface is the most horrible thing I've ever used. If I had to use that I'd drop G-Mail in an instant. Mail makes G-Mail usable.

I use both, and I do find the Gmail interface great, it allows you to keep all the emails from a conversation/subject/topic organized, I like that feature.
The seach is great also.

And I do like Mail, the search is better than Gmail. Is there a way to keep the conversations all together in Mail, like Gmail does?

That's specifically what I hate.

It doesn't "allow me" to keep topics together like you said. Rather, it forces together e-mails that it thinks belong together. What G-Mail thinks does not always match reality.

If it really was just an option I'd have no problem with that feature as I could turn it off. But instead that's just the way it works and there's nothing you can do about it. So when it's wrong you just have to live with that.

I can't stand it.

Can you please tell me, why do you use Mail, rather than do the direct web access to f.ex. GMail. TIA!

Apple Mail sucked so much in Leopard that I switched to Microsoft Entourage 2008 - which is stable and works. Apple Mail had huge problems and slow downs when it had to handle more than 1,000 eMails in its local database. Entourage does not have that problem. Mozilla Thunderbird 3 also worked well enough, but because I use Outlook 2007 at work, I'm more used to the Microsoft way.

Why I use an eMail client instead of a web interface? First of all: Usability. Secondly: I want to have OFFLINE access to my eMails.

That may have been true for you but definitely is not typical at all. Each of my mailboxes has thousands and thousands of messages in them. Search is pretty instant, and Mail runs circles around any web-based email.

Old habits, I guess. Even though there are likely notification apps for gmail and/or mobileme, I like having it there and notifying.

It's also quite good at consolidating my accounts. Ideally I should do so myself, but there are various reasons to have both.

Oh, and it's that little bit more responsive than any web interface. This gap has been rapidly closing lately though. Really depends on your connection/lag.

COMPLETELY agree. Plus that tedious 'feature' is the reason why 'Archive' doesn't actually MEAN archive - as soon as you archive a conversation and then you receive an email that attaches to that conversation, it brings it back to the Inbox.

These two things are the reason I never bother to tidy up my Inbox, it's so hard to maintain. But really that's an entirely different issue altogether..

I used Mail until I couldn't keep it in sync with different computers that wouldn't let me set up Mail. And also, when I'm on the go and don't have my laptop, I can check it from any computer.

But I can also use it offline with no internet connection using Offline Mail. And I have 5 accounts link there as well. The big benefit of Mail is that the program itself is much more stable than the internet browser. I wish I could use a mix of both Mail and the browser in a way that all my tags in Gmail and the folders in Mail are synced.

How do you get Yahoo to work? I googled around and I found that you needed to pay (and it does not support IMAP)...

I have the same question. I'd love to get my Yahoo mail within Mail (much as I already do on my iPhone with no problem), but it claims I need to upgrade to Yahoo Plus. Has anyone been able to get the free Yahoo Mail to work?

One reason to use Mail over Gmail's web interface is availability. The past several outages - the one's where no one could get to their mail via the web interface - Mail with IMAP worked just fine. I never even realized that there was an "outage."

After upgrading to Snow Leopard I decided to make the switch and use both my Hotmail (POP) and Gmail (IMAP) accounts through Mail since Gmail hasn't been loading properly lately through my browser.

Everything has been smooth although older e-mails from my Gmail account are duplicated.

I assume Sent Items work the same way as the Inbox for multiple accounts? I can't tell because that heading is collapsed in the graphic..

Yep.

IMAP, my friend, IMAP.

I don’t use Yahoo, but my understanding is that a free Yahoo account doesn’t have IMAP, but you should be able to set it up as a POP account.

I use my gmail account with Mail and it works great,
I have mine on fetching new data every minute so I am always getting my emails very quickly. Attaching files is easy, and resizing them is a BREEZE too. People I know who use the web mail have to either 1. resize their photos with a third party program or 2. choose a smaller resolution on their camera

The only problem I have, which isn't really a problem on my end, more like the other user. If someone sends me an email (such as from yahoo mail through the web) and asks me to attach a photo, if I attach it by dragging it and dropping it where I am typing my reply, they say they can only view the image and not download it....it seems strange, but basically they say it's not an attachment. They cannot drag and drop, save, copy, or anything.

Any thoughts on that?
