I prefer my matte MBP for a few reasons:
  1. I hate the glare
  2. Show fingerprints if you're one to touch the screen...however I never do
  3. To me, colors seem more even on the matte
  4. I prefer the silver around the screen
  5. I think matte screns are classier and look more "professional"
  6. Don't have to worry about glass cracking
  7. Maybe easier to fix the screen if something happens....(I think)?

It's only visible if you open your eyes.

Haha. Finally, I've read a post of yours that has finally made me chuckle! Thank you!

The silver bezel does look more professional. I wish the rounded edges of
the uMBP weren't so round, but more cornered like the previous gen MBP/PowerBook.

I had a late 2008 15in MBP and my wife has the unibody 13in 2008 MB. Mine started having problems with the flickering and Apple replaced it a few months ago after a few failed repair attempts. Anyways, I opted for the $50 upgrade and went with the matte option. Since I can compare it with the previous MBP screen and my wife's MB I can confidently say that the screen is much more pleasant to work with.

The colors are much more subdued and the lack of everyday glare makes it very pleasing to work on. Also, the glossy screen always seemed to accumulate fingerprints and other deposits on the screen. The matte just stays clean. Also, this computer is lighter than the previous MBP (the lid feels different, almost a hollower feel).

So, take it for whats its worth. I love the matte display.

I think that the best way is to provide an option where possible.

That way you can satisfy more customers.

If anti-glare captured more than half the market for 15s and 17s, you would see that as an option on the 13s and possibly even the iMac.
If you will recall, recently the 15 inch was offered with the matte option. So based upon increased sales, maybe we will see a 13 inch matte option.

If so, I'm there.

After months of reading forum discussions like this one, I went for the glossy. Both have plusses and minuses, as we all know. I don't know if this makes sense, but for me the glossy brings something special to the display that I don't get from matte screens -- a richness and vibrancy. Yes, in certain conditions, I think one can get a headache from glossy; I decided I could avoid those conditions easily enough. People have talked about smudges on the glossy -- but on the matte all those smudges would still be there, invisible at first perhaps, but soaking into the screen! Plus the glass is very easy to clean, and also protects the inner corners where the bezel meets the actual display and where dirt would otherwise accumulate. Both are obviously gorgeous in many, if different, ways. I think one needs both -- my next 'book will be a matte! Peace.

Matte screens are easier on the eyes. They are great for people who needs to starr at their computer for a long time.

glossy screens look awesome and brings out the colors better.

Most of these are personal preferences and can't be debated. It's like asking "why do you like to wear blue shoes instead of red?

It must not affect me, because once I used a glossy screened Apple computer for 5 or 6 hours and it was easy on my eyes the whole time :D

I prefer glossy because it makes the computer more rich looking and the matte screen make it look more like a PC. Lol. The display just stand out more because it is glossy and flashy

Sorry to inform you but macs are personal computers too.

But my MBP has some dust between the glass and actual screen, a bit annoying.

I went with the 15in Glossy MBP, for aesthetic reasons, mostly. I only watch the occasional Hulu episode on my MBP, and do not play any games. It is used mostly for school, so I find that the visually pleasing all-glass screen works better for me. A friend has the older MBP matte screen, and while her MBP is only ~3 years old, it looks outdated and out of focus with the Matte. I also find colors are more vivid.

If you compare your screen to a three year old MBP, you are probably comparing a modern LED screen to an older CCFL screen. Of course the LED screen is brighter! This has nothing to do with matte vs glossy. Matte LED screens are bright and vivid too.

I think glossy is just safer. You never know when a ninja might try and sneak up from behind you while youre on Facebook. :D

Its simply down to personal preference and the environment you typically work in, one is not better than the other. I work indoors, generally in the evening so glossy for me, however if I used my MBP outdoors or mostly in the day I would choose Matte, its that simple.

Ah come on we have to put an end on this.

Yes, Macs are PCs.

But there is a convention, or at least a "rule of thumb", that PC designates an X86 computer running windows.

Saying "windows pc" is as useless as saying "mac os x mac"...

If you say pc, you aren't talking about a mac, nor about a linux pc.

I've come to realize that i think I prefer the glassy/glossy screen of my new 13" mbp (had it for about 6 months) over the matte screens because the reflections are sharper and smaller. With matte you get this huge dithering halo effect that covers a much larger area on your screen and more effectively blurs out whatever you are trying to see on your screen. With glassy the reflection is so crisp and mirror like it occupies a much smaller area on your screen, which means it blocks out less of what you are trying to see. I guess that is for head-on reflections, and off-angle reflections would probably be better dampened by matte.

Next time you are in the apple store check out the matte vs glassy and see what I mean about the huge smudged out reflections on matte vs the smaller sharper reflections on glassy.

Your point is only valid when the light source is really intense (i.e. sunlight) and the reflection on the glossy screen would be incredibly over powering too.

Glossy screens reflect everything, where as matte screens, you only get the noticeable light diffusion from intense light sources which the glossy performs just as badly.

There is no debate about reflections on glossy screens being vivid and annoying. The debate is whether you can tolerate it as the picture and colours are much richer on a glossy screen.

personal preference, dumb question, dumb thread

Over the past few months of perusing my way through the forums I have noticed a lot of people prefer matte over glossy.....Of course, we all have personal preference - but it just seems a LOT of people always say get a matte screen.

Why is this? I personally prefer the glossy. I'm on a 24" Alu iMac now with the glossy display, checked out the MBP in store and prefer the glossy...

I like the glossy for the high picture quality, I did do a test side by side of matte and glossy, and glossy just looked a lot better. Reflections can be a pain at times, but its not too hard to just move your display a few inches

All responses welcome

Glare

IMHO Having suffered thru a few years with a HP Pavillion Glossy screen laptop, I for one will never OPT to purchase a glossy screen. Glare sucks, shows every spot and fingerprint, overall cheesy appearance.

Again, just my opinion.

I usually work in the dark so I prefer the glossy display. Even when the sun is shining in a window near the computer I can always move it a little bit. Glossy all the way for me!

i have the previous gen MBP, plastic and when matte was standard. i had a chance to use the same model but with the glossy screen for a couple hours and it looks way better to me, i HATE matte screens, they look so dull. If Apple would use a glossy with antiglare coating like any of the new sonys that would be perfect, glossy without the relections.

Another advocate of glossy here. I've never had a matte screen, which I'm sure is contributory to my experience; I'm so used to glossy, I've just stopped noticing the reflection that drives others so crazy... but, having played with the mattes in the Apple store, I'm glad I stuck with glossy. To my admittedly glare-desensitized eyes, matte just looks dull.

But then, it's all a matter of taste, right? :)

Agh, I hate the glossy MBP screens. They're nice for casual computing I guess, but I had a look at the matte 15" and 17" unibodies and the screen just takes my breath away. I love the matte look and ease of calibration for the buttload of Final Cut work I do.

Plus, I go to a very film/media heavy school that requires all students to have MBPs, and I swear if I see another glass Unibody 15" MBP i'm going to have a heart attack. There must be over 3000 of them here.

Opinions vary so much on this, which is why it was murder for Apple to not offer it before.
