Very few "need" their phone. They just want it sooner. 'Nuff said.

I'm looking down a stream on Facebook of people who "need" it, hence the "need." People who are otherwise indifferent to tech, yet Apple and their iPhone have some weird effect on their buying habits...

my IP4 i purchased used has the inevitable unresponsive home button and as much as i keep trying to fix it, the issue keeps coming back. i'm ready for a new phone :)

I like to buy all my Apple stuff as soon as it's out. That way I get the full usage for a yearish before the next one comes out. I also don't want to wait for weeks for stock to be replenished.

I'm one of those people that don't like other grubby hands touching my stuff, so it's not to show off either.

Someone asked me the other day, what if Samsung wins the injunction against the iPhone 5. Well, I'll be one in 8 million people that will have one then :)

Because when I got the 4 two years ago, it was a killer. It was awesome. However, as I'm sure we all know, technology grows exponentially. What was state of the art just 24 months ago is now dated, stale. My 3G is laughably slow, my camera isn't as great as the 4S or even some android cams and I'm a photographer who prefers to have a good point and shoot as opposed to lugging all my equipment around with me every single day. And Siri looks bad ass.

Do I "need" it? No. Do I "want" it? Yes. I qualify for the upgrade now, why wait?

Tradition. This will be my fifth launch-day iPhone (the original iPhone wasn't sold in Japan, otherwise it would be my sixth). :)

I doubt people buy iPhones to show off. It's a common occurrence. I bought it cause it got me excited. I bought it to please my own materialistic mind.

Two reasons.

1. Selling the 4S is a time sensitive issue, and I'd rather not revert to a dumbphone at any point.

2. Why would I want to wait?

I would be getting it on launch day if i didn't have zero money right now. I'm due for an early upgrade but will likely have to wait a few months.

Hope you all enjoy your phones and looking forward to hearing the reviews.

Same reason people want to see a movie opening weekend, get a book release day, you want the experince and fun of something new before its spoiled. Life is short and nothing wrong being in the the first club.

Its kinda of a community feel and sharing the times and expeirences just fun. Some take it too far but mostly just for the rush

because iphone kind of represent mobile fashion and no one wants to be outdated:) How cool to have an iphone 5 at the first time:)

Many forget that most buyers are upgraders who have an iPhone 4 or earlier which is probably now slow and/or on its last legs. They NEED a new phone.

The only reason I can possibly think of is to show off, a status symbol,It's not exclusive anymore, it's not a symbol of technological superiority, it's not something rare and treasured, it isn't suddenly going to make you popular and yet so many people aspire to have one.

don't care about showing anything off. the phone is for "ME"!
I'm getting one on day one because it's "FUN".

You're asking, and that's the reason. I feel happy when i get the latest and the greatest on the day. I would never line up like this for anything else epecially knowing that, if i buy the iPhone 5, 11 months later new, the price remains the same.

I think it's a fair question. I'm a heavy user of my iPhone 4, and for me it's that for the past year, my 4 has started to show its age -- lagging when using my podcast app, slow camera response, things like that. I'm also eager to try out the improved camera and Siri. So I really can't wait to get my hands on a phone that will be much faster, improved, and with features I don't currently have.

Plus, honestly, I am the kind of geek who's incredibly impatient to get his grubby hands on a new toy, so it cannot get here fast enough. I'm the same way when I'm building a computer and am waiting for the components to arrive.

Jailbreak would fix all of that. I returned my S3 yesterday and the rep at ATT asked to see my old iphone for something and he was like "wow how is your phone so fast"

If you answered "format" I would get it but "jailbreak"? wtf dude , ure on some huge mushroom or something?
