why does someone who makes more than 700 million still use the old iPhone 13?

just wondering.... after see the guy on TV the other day. (the sports channel)

Edit: never mind.... my friends just reminded me that the Japanese are frugal... even someone who has a 10-year 700-million contract.

Some people just don't care about tech or having the latest devices like that.... The same person could be in to cars for example and they have the newest model every year, but don't care about their phone as long as it works..... I have a friend who still rocks an iPhone 12 pro, but he spends thousands on new sneaker releases.... Because that's just what he's in to.

I read MR on a regular basis and it's costing me more money. :)
Indeed. Buying all the gear so one can play along at home makes reading about tech more expensive. And no offense intended, but this thread is essentially shaming someone for still owning an iPhone 13 which is still supported by iOS.

Most of his salary is deferred, so he ONLY makes ~2 Million per year (plus MEGA endorements). So he probably doesn't want to splurge on non-essentials right now. 😂

good point...

so when Apple releases the iPhone 30 with a list price of $10,000, he'll be ready to buy!

Resourcefulness is key. If all rich people have been like that, maybe we would have less of climate change. Smartphones and e-waste are a major factor in it. Using old device is better for the planet than buying new one every day. Also the longer the wait, the more you appreciate leaps in tech.

Smartphones have mostly stopped evolving and innovating right around iPhone 11/12/13, so no wonder most people still use these models, because newer ones offer practically nothing new. Apple is losing money here because most people are not interested in 48MP cameras, slightly larger screens and new colors, their current phone works and that’s enough.

Unless Apple makes Siri so intelligent that it can take full control of all phone options and you just say “hey siri, you know I feel eye strain, so something” and it automatically sets PWM off, dithering off, night shift on for example, or creates shortcuts based on your ChatGPT-like descriptions, that would definitely make people ditch older phones, though many are still not interested

Because everyone has their vice, his might not be phones/tech but other things e.g. golf, racing cars, fishing etc…all of which can get far more expensive than buying a new iPhone.

13 isn’t even frugal… 8 would be frugal. What 13 cannot do that the latest can? Absolutley nothing, runs latest iOS that’s all you need.

Because it still works, and unlike the average American consumer, he is not so emotionally needy that he needs to constantly buy something to fill that need.

He probably has had the phone repaired or the battery replaced as well, and probably more than once. Next week, I will spend around 900 USD repairing a 2013 Outback because it is less expensive to repair a car than to buy a new car. My car and my iPhone are not status symbols for me. They are tools.

What does the 17 do that the 13 can't? I met G-Eazy back in late 2017, who already had millions of dollars, and he had an iPhone 6 (the X was already out). But Who cares? Klay Thompson was rocking an iPhone 6 or 7 for years after the X came out. Not everyone cares about a slightly better camera, battery or display. At the end of the day it's a phone.
