If his needs are already fully met by the iPhone 13, and the phone isn’t even broken, then why buy something he doesn’t need just because he can afford it?
Honestly, a lot of people these days chase newer devices and more features, but later realize they barely use any of those extra functions. And some devices get more expensive because of features that many people don’t truly need.
To me, that kind of spending is basically a form of wasted resources.

If I avoided online forums for the past 3 decades and used that time into building business that gives me a personal income of >$1m annually then I'd be better for it than many proud to be MR members pre-iPhone release.

Other people don't see that as dopamine generating so that's why I'm replying to this thread.

For many of us "elders" the latest/greatest phone is meaningless. Once you have your phone dialed in and operating smoothly, changing it for a "maybe" is not a priority. We don't care about a better camera or more storage if our current phone is good enough for how we use it.

Most of the pictures I take are at work and are used to document something - usually something broken or something extremely stupid. A well running phone that does exactly what i need is far more valuable to me than some wowee incremental improvements.

The simple answer to this question is that many people simply don't care. Does it make calls, text, and access the internet? For many people, as long as it does those things, any phone is as good as any other. It's just like with cars. For many people, as long as it gets you from point A to point B there's no difference.

Another factor is that ironically the super wealthy don't need to show off their wealth. Lots of middle class people carry a lot of debt just too appear more wealthy than they actually are, living in a bigger house, driving a nicer car, and yes, even using a better phone than they can actually afford just to "keep up with the Jones'" so to speak. Super wealthy people don't have to prove anything.

Finally, also consider that when you're wealthy that you probably have an assistant if not an entire staff managing much of your life, you probably barely need your own smartphone at all.

That’s the whole point they become wealthy in first place.
