What does the 17 do that the 13 can't? I met G-Eazy back in late 2017, who already had millions of dollars, and he had an iPhone 6 (the X was already out). But Who cares? Klay Thompson was rocking an iPhone 6 or 7 for years after the X came out. Not everyone cares about a slightly better camera, battery or display. At the end of the day it's a phone.
USB-C charging, always on display, the selfie camera is honestly awesome, faceID works a bit better, and it's snappier.

And I say this as someone who prefers the mini.

Different charging port, AOD (everyone I know with a 17 PM disables it), yes a better selfie camera for whoever wants to do that. Face ID works great on the 13. And it never lags. These phones are on 5+ year cycles now, it's just throwing away money that can be invested or used for more important things to pay for such incremental upgrades.

Happy I loaded the boat on AAPL shares between $130-200 over the years instead of paying $1,000+ every year or every other year for a slightly better phone.

Only sports figure with a 700 millions contract I know is Ohtani - baseball player.

Oh duh, I should've thought've that (plus the Japan reference by someone else).

Yeah he's shown in other ways he's a very grounded individual, and hopefully he's able to remain that way.

Smartphones have mostly stopped evolving and innovating right around iPhone 11/12/13, so no wonder most people still use these models, because newer ones offer practically nothing new. Apple is losing money here because most people are not interested in 48MP cameras, slightly larger screens and new colors, their current phone works and that’s enough.
Thank you, that is certainly how I feel about getting new iPhone to replace our two iPhone13minis. Not sure about the “…Apple is losing money…” part though. Financial statements show many coins accruing to the Apple vault. Difficult to say what effect we stick-in-the-mud buyers are having. Makes for a good argument though.

why does someone who makes more than 700 million still use the old iPhone 13?

just wondering.... after see the guy on TV the other day. (the sports channel)

Edit: never mind.... my friends just reminded me that the Japanese are frugal... even someone who has a 10-year 700-million contract.
Odds are it isn't about frugality.

It's about focus on making more than 700 million into the future.

Observe Steve Jobs & Mark Zuckerberg's sense of daily clothing.

They're famous to keeping to a set of clothes and not changing the style at all for a decade or two.

Those who spend their time on tech forums like MR like the latest and greatest and talking about it among themselves.

Is the fella who makes 700 million spending his time talking about his iPhone 13 or does he see it as a tool to get things done and not be a fanboi about it because it isn't connected to business.

In other words if people like us spent all our non-work time on up skill and productivity gains would we be maing more than what we are making now? Odds are yes but will you enjoy life's non-revenue aspect?

Frugality is a good thing. Conspicuous consumption is a bad thing. And a smart rich person would use a tool that’s good enough and donate the money they could’ve spent to someone who needs it

Yeah, I've had the opportunity to hang around people who make significantly more money than me. While they drive nice cars and have very nice houses, they usually neglect their tech - really terrible laptops, and phones that are many generations out of date. I see this at universities too (not cheap ones) - it's common to see a lot of old phones - even busted screens - despite some of these people being very well to do.

Me? I'm a poor sob who upgrades every year or every other year. Maybe that's why they have $ and I don't. lol

Perhaps a famously successful person might even enjoy reading about and discussing Apple tech on MR forums without disclosing their identity. MR is a nice escape from reality sometimes.

Sorry for my ignorance, but who are we talking about here??
I am assuming Ohtani.

NVM: someone answered it.

My brother is still rocking the iPhone 7 with a broken... everything... and he has 15 million IIRC. I wish I could like that to be honest.

You know the saying "why fix it if it isn't broke", maybe they are living that philosophy. I do the same. I just upgraded my mid-2012 MBA with a 2025 MBA because it wouldn't charge anymore no matter what was done.
