Almost all the major specs seem to be the same and one would assume that you can fit a larger battery in a bigger phone. So what gives?

Why does the iPhone SE have better battery life than the 6S?

It has smaller screen, so it uses less energy when screen is on.
The bigger screen means you need a more powerful backlight and more GPU cycles to drive.

If that's the case then how does the 6S Plus have significantly better battery than the standard 6S? Screen on the 6S Plus is .8" larger than the 6S and also has a higher resolution display (1080p vs ~720p).
IIRC, the 6s Plus has a significantly larger battery, no? 2750 mAh vs 1715 mAh? 160% larger?
I'm guessing that larger battery compensates for the screen and then some...
Yes obviously that's the case. I guess my question is why is Apple able to make such a dramatic increase in battery size from the 6S to the 6S Plus but not from the SE to the 6S? The size difference seems to be pretty equal between them and they have the same variables (ie: screen size and resolution changes).
6 and 6s have a bigger screen and are thinner and the battery size didn't increase all that much from the 5s. The SE probably stuck with the same battery as the 5s (we'll have to wait for a teardown to find that out), but the A9 is more efficient than the A7 in the 5s so overall the battery life improved compared to the 5s.
It's also older LTE technology, probably logic board is different, memory make be more power efficient. It probably has very little to do with the display.
I may be expecting too much from this little phone, as I am coming from a 6 Plus. Fully charged, I have used it for 1hr12min, and I'm down to 90%. I wonder how it will compare to the 6 Plus and the old 5. If I can get the stated 10hrs, I'll be happy.
Need to use it for at least a few charging cycles before any decently meaningful observations and conclusions could be made.
From many tests, it seems like the iphone SE will beat both models in battery life :3
It won't beat the plus
It's still too early but I've been very impressed so far, using my SE the same as I did my 6s in the same work location and LTE has been equal as the 6s and I'm actually getting better battery results. If your looking for a smaller phone with excellent battery this is your phone.
From the reviews I've read and viewed, most are saying the SE "SHOULD" get better battery life than the Plus. Too early to tell, one way or another.
Only 10% used on 1:12...that's more than I get on a 6s on low-power, no less.
No offence , but i dont know where you have been since the release of the plus.
The plus series is basically the smartphone industry standard for battery life, all other phones are measured against it.
Very doubtful the SE will have better battery life
coming from a 6s, this is great. I still have 88% left taking it off the charge at 5:30am. Usually I would be in the 60% range.
No offense, but I'll take Apple's published estimates on the SE's battery life over yours
Lets look at physical dimensions not numbers, numbers are meaningless.
Look at a Plus battery in any teardown, it is huge. The SE cant physically compete against that, i dont care how big the plus screen is
Really?? That's you're argument? By those standards, a semi truck should be faster than a Ferrari cause its bigger. You make no sense. A battery size has very little to do with its actual duration. OS optimizations, screen size, hardware etc. Apple is telling you the SE lasts longer than the Plus in its tests and you still want to deny it? ok...suit yourself.
