Why does the screen shrink?

I would like to use my Samsung 42" TV as a working screen for photo editing but when I connect my 2018 15" MBP to it via HDMI cable the screen on the computer and on the TV shrink to a square in the middle.

Why does this happen and can I make it full size somehow?

Check what resolution or scaling option the MacBook is set to in display settings when the TV is connected.

Scaling. You have to adjust the resolution on a per screen setting. Several times, screen resolutions are not automatic.

Fantastic, I was on 1024 X 768, now gone to 1080p or I and it's full screen!
Don't remember seeing the "scaled" option before.
