Ever since updating to macOS 15.3.2, I have noticed that the floating thumbnail in the bottom right corner of the display was no longer appearing after taking a screenshot.
Using Cmd-Shift-5 to access the options, I would notice that the corresponding option "Show Floating Thumbnail" would be unchecked. Initially thinking about an involuntary user error, I would check it. The feature would be back up and running for some time (maximum a couple of hours) and then it would uncheck itself again on its own.
I tried to check it, then log out of macOS. Upon logging back in, the option would be unchecked again.

What could be causing this? What could I do to solve it?
I have already filed a report to Apple via the Feedback Assistant app.

Exact same problem here, in macOS 14.6.1. Floating screenshot thumbnails simply stopped appearing; the option was toggled off. Each time I re-toggle the option, it works for a couple of hours, then turns itself off again.

I initially wondered if a my new installation of InDesign was the culprit (only thing that changed on the Mac), but apparently not.... :::urgh:::

Thank you. So it doesn't seem to be macOS-version-dependant.
I will try with a Safe boot to see if it helps.

Same issue - MBA M1 - between this issue and the fact that Spotlight no longer finds some settings I am wondering what's going on with Apple!

Possible solution (that makes absolutely no logical sense):
I toggled "Remember last selection" off and now...? Floating thumbnails function normally.

So far, so good. It's worked consistently for five hours straight (which is about three hours longer than each time I had to repeatedly toggle "floating" back on).

Fingers crossed.

Try to give Full Disk Access to Terminal, set the value
Code:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail 1
and log out.

If it doesn't fix the problem, delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screencapture.plist, open the Screenshot app (/Applications/Utilities/Screenshot.app) and check if the setting in on.

A Reddit thread points out at a potential conflict with Dropbox. I’ve screenshots switched off in Dropbox but it seems to affect it nonetheless.
Now I’ve quit Dropbox and the issue has not resurfaced for now. Will keep you updated.

I confirm that, by turning off Dropbox for an entire day, the setting remained as I had set it.
Launching Dropbox the day after switched the setting off for me.
I will now try to work without Dropbox and launch it only when I really need it, or use it on the web.
I'm not using the FileProvider version of Dropbox. Does anyone know if this changes things?
