Why are there lines where the transparent image meets the background?

You could also install the "clear the air" tweak. It allows you to have the lockscreen the way you do in the picture you uploaded, minus the lines.

Looks nice, but I'd prefer the iPhone OS 7 style unlock, no button at all, just slide it.

That's one of the few things it got right.

You can get something that sort of looks like that with "clear the air". It has an option to make the slider completely transparent and only leave the text visible. You still have to slide where the knob would be though.

This is true. And there are a couple iOS 7 lock screens themes that accomplish this as well.
