The red icon doesn't work for everyone. Some say it works, others say it doesn't. Mine doesn't... The only way to see if I have updates is to manually open the store app myself.

Too many people make excuses on here. On Android, I get the choice as to what apps can automatically update themselves, and even if none of them are set to automatically update, I get a notification every other day or so saying "updates are available" It's perfect. Apple needs to implement something like this

While I agree an option to auto update or not would be nice, I don't see it as any issue with the OS. Even if a user's App Store icon does not update it's not difficult to check every so often. It takes less than 6-8 seconds to press the icon and check for the update list.

To each either own I guess.

What's with all the battery complaints?

When an app has push updates, it is OPTIONAL.

If you're that paranoid about your battery, just don't turn that option on.

This feature could have easily been added by Apple. To dismiss such a potentially useful feature and simply write it off as a battery drain... well that just shows the ignorance of the Apple sheep. "Apple can do no wrong" I guess, eh?

You guys are hilarious.

I've been wondering this, ever since Apple flicked the push notification switch. You'd think, if any app used push notifications, it would be the App Store itself. The App Store should tell me when updates to apps are available, and it shouldn't push me out of the Store, when I do update those apps.
It really needs a downloads tab, like the iTunes app does.

Does it really matter anymore? With iOS5 around the corner, you're anyways getting automatic updates.

I thought the auto update on the iOS5 was just for the iOS NOT for any apps you have loaded.... am I incorrect?

IMO, App Store app needs a major overhaul. Not only is it slow (especially on iPhone), it suffers from many usability issues. What I would like to see:
  • Customizable notification: off, badge, or notification center (banners).
  • Option to automatically update over WiFi for bug fix updates.
  • Do not prompt password for free updates and free apps.
  • Faster App Store performance.
  • Downloading an app shouldn't kick you out of the App Store app.
  • Ability to mark n app for later purchase, so that I can be reminded to download 20 MB+ app over WiFi later.
  • Description of in-app purchases.

You are incorrect.
There is no "auto-update" feature in iOS5 at all.
Perhaps you're thinking of the OTA updates.
Even those have to be manually kicked off.

I would like the App Store to tell me when to update my apps. I usually have around 1-2 per day (I have a lot of games), and it's a bit annoying when I check the App Store for something else and see I have however many updates.

I would certainly like the option.
