Wow now thats the macbook pro! you just forgot the 3g wan! and touchscreen IPS display

Sure, they've got plenty of room.

IPS display for sure since the battery is near doubled in size.

Just imagine though
2012 MBP:
15 inch IPS display 1680x1050 Matte
22nm SandyBridge chip
Core i7 Quad
8 gigs of ram
512 SSD
Some crazy graphics card
Double the amount of connectors on current gen macbookpros
18 hour battery life

Yes okay I can dream can't I.

Let us not forget what the Pro in MBP is short for because there are still alot of Pro's out there who actually still use optical discs as part of their backup solution. There are good common sense reasons for it too which I won't get into simply because it should be common sense!

External Superdrive?... Precious luggage space? Don't think Apple will go down this route quite yet like Dell, HP, Tosh, IBM/Lenevo et al.

I may not be a Pro of the calibre that you mean, but I would rather entrust my backups to a hard drive. Stores more, takes up less space, and doesn't get scratches or snapped all that easily. But I accept that I'm not exactly the typical user.

The opportunity for Apple to sell another peripheral? And for me to not have DVDs I play when i visit the States yell at me for having a DVD drive from another region? Personally I quite like that option, even though it would cost me more (as I'd need drives for both the US and UK regions).

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbelievable price
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave macbook not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To type when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that iPad
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without blu ray to pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
From a sharp edge macbook part!!!!

I hear ya. I don't think I made myself really clear in my comment. What I was just trying to get at was that some people do visit the strangest of places with their MBPs. They do their business and frequently the terrain they endure can often lead to equipment damage. Optical discs can handle heavy knocks unlike HDDs but they often do do both as preserving the data is critical until they return to base where they can do the server upload. These guys aren't your typical users either. :D

IPS panels have nothing to do with battery size; it's all about costs. They make 15" IPS panels right now that will work in the MacBook Pro, but the issue is they are very expensive and not many people will want to burden the added costs.

I was just thinking about this there is alot of wasted space in the macbook pro I mean do we really need a DVD drive now? or Blu-ray anymore? with virtually all music, games, books, media online and in itunes and usb flash storage so cheep!

Virtually all music and media online? Only if you have a very, very restricted view of music and video. 80% of all music sales are physical. More in DVD sales. And 100% of all Blu-ray sales.

I have an Optibay on its way but I can see the same group of moaners complaining if it was removed just as they did when the air came without a cd drive.

The USB ports on our company network are all locked down. The only way I have to move large files around is via CD/DVD. I also still buy the odd DVD, CDs to rip lossless and other such trivia. I'm not always tethered to the internet either, so an optical drive is a must. Not needed a BR drive yet, but as they can still run CDs and DVDs I would not say no.

I'm all for progress, but it is still too early for me to drop optical media.

I use my superdrive everyday. As a professional audio engineer, I rip CD's at the highest quality possible (better than downloading from iTunes or Amazon. Superior by far). I also still purchase physical CDs, weird, I know.

However, I do see the logic by removing it. You can always pickup an external superdrive, like for the MBA. If it were somehow able to be connected via firewire, that would be pretty rad, but it would be another thing to carry around, another cable to lose, etc. Lack of opti drive adds a world of possibilities of course, maybe add some ports on the right side for additional USB/FW, bigger battery, etc. I'd rather keep my opti bay IN the computer, and rock my external HDD(s)

I love my optical drive, and yes, I think the future is going to be solid-state media, but that day is not now and it's not in the next 3-4 years, so for right now I'm A-OK with my opti drive.

Just my opinion, of course =)

apple has decided they need to let their users catch up with the pace of technology. beats me why anyone would use the antiquated garbagetech that is optical but i guess there are dinosaurs amongst us

Flash memory still costs ~3x as much per GB to produce compared to DVD.

Only 57% of U.S. Internet connections are 2+ Mbps.

Most consumers buy software, music, and movies at retail stores.

Optical media still has a lot of life left in it.

I use it because it moves more data more quickly.

Remember the ancient saying: Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of magtapes.

Why not offer it as an option? it sounds like about half of us want an internal superdrive, 30% want an external one, and 20% don't need one at all. Default configuration comes with a superdrive, but a 500 GB HD is a $100 option to replace it, with SSD options for the same increase over the 500 as they are in the HDD bay. External superdrive is an extra $100. Maybe you get an eSATA port or some extra USB/FW ports if you decline the superdrive...

That's a very good idea... LOVE IT~

Apple can included the drive for free:D:D

PS: The only time I'll use the drive is when I reinstall the OSX... sometimes movie...

Hands...Time...Too much.:)

Lol! Yeah but it only toke 2 mins to change a few words! I cant beleave the threds still going!

I must say it would be nice to have the option to opt out of the drive for a few extra usbs and ports and an extra HDD with a bigger battery!

Then maybe apple could be the first with a timemachine superdrive with a hdmi port in the back thats wireless that sits on your desk and connects when you back home so you got a wireless link between your monitor and disk drive!

Much line a striped down mac mini just a terminal with Video out wifi router and a drive so its a wireless macbook dock!

THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM!

I did a mockup pic to show you what I mean!

I mean over a 3rd more battery the POWER!!!!!! burn a cd for your car I aint done that since the 90's? what about that ipod on your dash? lol!

I'm just burning Windows 7 with my new superdrive :))
Just kidding. Don't think I will need it more often. An external firewire drive would be PERFECT.

BTW: I wonder what Photoshop CS5 would do to these internals with content-aware fill :D:cool::eek:

I know the spelling is shoddy and my photoshop work but its just an idea!

Move On? Haha do you realise what you're saying? Around 80% (guestimated) of useful software today is on DVD's. Films, Music, Software... the list goes on.
Why do people keep giving the software install argument? That's one-time only (for each software) and can be done with an external drive.

For you, maybe. But there's plenty of people complaining that they don't care about battery life and they'd prefer more power draining bleeding edge hardware like quad CPU's and top end GPU's. Wanting the space for something else like an extra HD or bigger battery is just another variation on a theme that goes along the lines of "My mac would be perfect if only it had xxxxx"
I wouldn't count out the possibility of better specs and larger battery. Not big changes but enough.

Let us not forget what the Pro in MBP is short for because there are still alot of Pro's out there who actually still use optical discs as part of their backup solution.
It doesn't mean the same as the "Pro" in "Mac Pro."
