Everyone has a different computer setup, so people need different cable lengths. But it's not Apple's responsibility to provide one that will be perfect for everyone. What do you do if the cord on your coffee maker isn't long enough to reach the outlet? You move stuff or you get an extension. Same thing here.
As for the two-piece issue, it makes sense. You don't need a wall plug with a cable attached. You'd have to wind it whenever you wanted to take it somewhere, which stresses where the cord meets the plug. I think it's much nicer to have the pieces come apart.

Umm. Let's over think this one. Why not just use a standard household extension cord? That's how I have one of my chargers. I can add as many as I want for about a $1 a piece. Not that hard.
I'd wager that the overwhelming majority of people charge their phones on a nightstand, for which the cable is more than sufficient.
If you have a special need for a longer cable, a USB extension cable is $5 online.
My suggestion for him: Buy a long/extended 3rd party cable and glue/tape it to the adapter. Now it's one piece, not two. Problem solved. The op does not want to, he wants one long cable that attaches directly to the adapter.
its EU regs on phone chargers being universal and also saving materials - if teh cable is just 1 cm shorteron 4 million units so far sold that's 400km or 250 miles of cable saved!!!![]()
Why does Apple give you this tiny little USB cable with a wall adapter instead of a real charger? Preferably one longer than 2-3 feet also?![]()

I actually had to move some furniture around due to the length of the cord.
The one from my BlackBerry 9780 was actually longer.
