Nearly died from too much water once

well... the wii is super fun

just kidding, that's weird

Much as I like the Wii, it wouldn't be even remotely worth trying something this stupid. The average person couldn't be expected to know about the dangers, but the station did. I'm not calling the victim stupid; I'm calling the station employees who knew better and failed to call it off at any point. It's a pity they weren't charged with manslaughter.

I nearly didn't survive an accidental case of hyponatremia (too much water) and all I can tell you it is absolutely horrible. I was in the hospital for days on end, extremely sick and couldn't keep any fluids as too much water caused severe dehydration -- yes, as strange as that sounds. Eventually recovered after proper osmotic balance was restored and maintained. I didn't get any quality sleep because they kept drawing blood every hour or two nonstop to check. So the first thing I did when I got home was to plop down on the couch and sleep. Way too tired to take even my coat or boots off. :D

I was very, very lucky, since if it had gone much further, I probably wouldn't be here to tell about it. How did I end up with this? Didn't realize a medicine's instructions to drink LOTS of water was a little too unspecific and I didn't think to ask my doctor for more details. Biiiiig mistake! (The medicine had a good reason for it -- because if you drank too little water while on the medication, you could end up with gallstones which is well beyond incredibly painful.) So I was dumb but fortunately survived.

I don't remember much about my hospital stay, but I vaguely recall a doctor in critical care/trauma unit telling me that with too little or too much water, it can cause problems with the heart through potassium levels being out of whack and other nasty stuff. So they also had me on a heart monitor the entire time, too, and put me in the cardiac unit for recovery after they were done with me in critical care/trauma.

That SUCKED. Never again.

Is this the same local radio show that had a hands-on-a-truck contest where the guy walked into a supermarket and shot himself?

I saw that on a documentary about how easy it is to get guns in the US.

They won't let you drink real sugar coke, but they'll let you all own firearms!

You're being really unfair to America. Yes, it's much too easy to buy firearms here, but our culture is far more variegated and complex than most Europeans think. And we have better ice cream than England, too, by far.

We Americans are all about instant gratification. Why bother with stuff that'll slowly degrade or kill you? Better to go out in a blaze of glory with lethal weapons. </tongue-in-cheek>

It can't compare the the gelato I've had in Italy.

as others have said...

1) it tastes like crap
2) all of the garbage they put in there is not good for you
3) you're better off drinking the non-diet stuff
4) i like my teeth

I love this meandering thread.

You're right, American ice cream is better than English. But Scottish ice cream is even better still!!! IMO
:D

I've never tried it. I give you credit for clotted cream, though; wow.

what are you talking about?

first of all it has to do with the quantities/pricing of sugar, not that they won't let you, second of all

what?

Just accept it, man! It's the GOVERNMENT out to control you.

But really, it was mentioned earlier as this thread, it's sad that not many companies in the US don't use real sugar. Some say there is no difference, but many others would disagree. Personally, I love finding the Mexican Coke's. They're in glass bottles, and as far as I know use real sugar (I could be wrong). But I sure do like 'em. It's a special treat as they are found in some random 7-11's and other small stores here in my town.

How much water do you actually have to drink in a given amount of time to die?

It's more about how fast you drink it. For example, the recommended daily intake (outside of food stuffs) is 8-12 8 ounce glasses. Lets say you stay at the high end and intake 12 a day, that's 96 ounces of water. Spread out over the entire day that's really nothing, but if you were to drink all of that really fast, like within an hour or so, you would start to hit some problems.

Another way to do it is to run a marathon and then drink a fair amount of water right afterward. The problem there is that you have drained your body of electrolytes and then pumped yourself full of water, leading to the same results as just drinking too much too fast (water intoxication).

This can also happen to babies when their formula is too watery and they drink too much.

In case anyone here is getting ideas about using this as a way to off themselves, it is an incredibly painful and really nasty way to go. I didn't do too much water on purpose (only by accident because of medication instructions -- dumb me for not checking with doctor on quantity of water to take...) but once did experience this situation and it's incredibly painful like you wouldn't believe during the worst of it.

When in fact it is .7 calories.
.7 calories for 8 fl. oz. (240 mL). Interesting, because I suspect hardly anyone here in the US drinks Coke in that small of amount. Instead it's more like 12 fl. oz. (or 355 mL), the size of a can or very small bottle, or greater. If 8 fl. oz. has .7 calories than 12 fl. oz. has 1.05 calories, which would make it non-zero for most people. Ah, marketing.
