Look, I am a Iphone user and IPad user. But with Jobs, Apple was #1 For innovation and market share. Now Apple is clearly falling behind Samsung and even One Plus. Samsung has phones at 120 HZ refresh rates and even Foldable phones (even though they are raw). 11 Pro Max was a refined phone but not innovative. Since Cook took over his innovations are I Pad Pro (a Jobs innovation), Apple Watch, and Air Pods. I Phones make 60+ % of Apple’s revenue. Apple needs to make this year and next a innovation year, not another S Year because Samsung is coming faster than ever.

Cook's business tactics are clearly working out for now, but one has to worry about the long-term health of Apple when it seems like they are stagnating in the ideas department.

Apple Glass is supposed to be the next big product, so I guess we will have to see how that goes. Also if Apple makes ARM-based laptops a thing, I would consider that to be a significant innovation in computing. It doesn't matter that they would not be the first to ever try such a thing, but to believe in it enough to say "this is the future" would be a very Apple, Jobs-like move to me that could have significant impact on the industry.

I bet there is some tension among designers/executives at Apple right now. If someone proposes a radical innovation, it's hard to imagine there isn't some inherent backlash towards the potential risk such an innovation would bring along the lines of, "What, do you think you're the next Steve Jobs?"

Apple wasn’t the innovator in the way you nostalgically remember.

iPhone: Late to market (already lots of smartphones and PDA’s). Didn’t have MMS or 3G, which competitors did. They also didn’t invent multi-touch displays, just the first to put one in a consumer phone, which was probably inevitable.

iPad: An iPhone or iPod Touch with a bigger screen. Limited OS, didn’t support peripherals like competitors.

Original iPod: Late to market, novel interface with iTunes integration. Poorer sound quality than some competitors.

Apple was never concerned with feature matching or specs. They took an existing product or market segment and did it their way and better than anyone else. With drawbacks. And usually far from first.

The Apple Watch has done this again with its novel interface and medical integration. It’s groundbreaking. AirPods, too. They have changed how I actually use wireless buds for the better.

What you remember isn’t innovation in the way you describe the term.

You do realise Samsung only just added 120hz this year, right?

It’s never about being first to market. Stop talking about steve jobs. That era is over. Steve Jobs also said nobody would buy big phones!

Samsung often get features out first and if you want features out first and you want to beta test them get a Samsung phone.

Many of their features work and many don’t like 100x space zoom...you won’t see Apple doing stuff like that until they see it being perfect

Just like 120hz will only be on the pros if they can get all the displays go look perfect. 120hz has had plenty of issues on android devices with display collaboration

Who was competing with the IPad, and IPod? I know the 1st Iphone left a lot to be desired, but it got corrected.

So Apple owning the wearable market under Tim means nothing? Airpods have also revolutionized the wireless bud market. Apple Music is getting close to the #1 music streaming service.

In addition, the iPad Pro was NOT a "Jobs innovation". In fact Jobs had a singular hatred towards stylus's in general.

Steve bit the bullet in 2011. The pro came out 4 years after his death.

Any more revisionist history you'd like to regale us with?

You thinking Apple is failing isn't a fact, it's an opinion.

First -120 Mhz is not that new. The fact we have to wait one more year than Samsung- not too big a deal in my books.

Secomd- I've seen a lot less of these complaint threads since Jony Ive left. I think he was great with Jobs as a strong product lead but some of his effort around ruthless shrinking of MacBooks at the expense of critical features (like the butterfly keyboarD)- was really tiresome. I think the new direction is pretty awesome and feels "fast" again to me.

As others have said, Apple is rarely first- but I think we are back to prior speeds.

Apple Music isn’t gonna take over Spotify.

Agree with this.

Jobs moderated some of Ive's more ambitious and out there design tendencies. With Jobs gone and Ive set up to answer to no one but Cook, there was no check on him. What's Cook (who is a business guy and not a design guy) going to say to Ive that Ive is going to consider with any seriousness?

It's just a matter of waiting a bit for all the previous Ive designs to work out of the production pipeline before the new designs kick in.

You sure? So what if Spotify has currently 110m paid* users vs Apple's 60m? Apple are newer to the game, have a bigger library and, most importantly, much much deeper cash reserves.

I prefer Spotify myself: I tried AM but found myself not liking enough to topple Spotify.

* Spotify class both fully paid subscriptions and their 3 month trials as "paid subscribers".

Is 120mhz innovation? AirDrop clone innovation? If the iPhone 11 Pro Max wasn’t innovative, neither are the latest Samsung models. See it’s easy to cast broad strokes without substance.

Only time Apple is ever first on something is when they remove something that has been a feature for awhile like the Floppy discs on the original iMac, removal of the optical drive period, and of course the 3.5mm headphone jack. :p

Other than that, Apple is often not first to launch a first of its kind product. There were plenty of MP3 players before iPod, there were touchscreen smartphones before iPhone, etc. Their innovation isn't in the spec sheets, but what they do well in and often innovate in is in the user experience. iPod was the first to have an UI that was easily usable by the users same with iPhone, etc. The A series chips have been about the most "unApple" like innovations occurring right now with Apple being cutting edge there.

If you want spec sheet bragging rights, Android is the better suitor for you.

It is like the IPhone 6s and just making a Jobs innovation bigger. I use the Pro but DO NOT use the pencil.
Ipad as you well aware, was a Jobs product.
I agree on the Airpods and Watch. Looking forward to Apple’s Airpod overears.
The HomePod didn’t revolutionize the speaker market.
Samsung is going to get the foldable market, that would be a great selling point for a smart phone market that is close to plateauing
The MacBook line was long neglected

I certainly wouldn’t switch from Amazon Music to Apple Music based on what they offer. Apple have a long way to go in the streaming department I think. I’ve got Apple TV and if I hadn’t had a year free with a new iPad I would have cancelled it by now.

I can’t currently think of any company more innovative than Apple when it comes to consumer technology products.

Foldable phones: You seem to think this is innovation. Most people think it is a useless gimmick.
120 Hz: What do you think 120 Hz would be doing for you? Do you think you can actually see it? You can't.
Some other Samsung innovations where charging from another phone. Seems that nobody is using that.
A neat thing that they had was synchronising sound so that you can use 6 Samsung phones as a single speaker. That was actually clever. Haven't heard yet how well it is working, and again, nobody seems to use it.

iPad is a derivative product.
Apple is almost alone now in the tablet market, and makes tons of money from it.

I think folding phones are definitely innovative but there’s a long way to go before they are mass market products. They absolutely have to sort price and durability out.

120hz refresh rates are just incremental improvements on existing technology as opposed to anything particular innovative in their own right.

The ability to use multiple phones as a single speaker is cool and innovative. It's too bad Samsung didn't come up with that idea first.

Just curious: Who did? And do you know if anyone has it really working well? (The other question would be: Is anyone using it? And I have never seen anyone using it. I've also never seen anyone charging their Samsung phone from another phone outside adverts).

I have a B/T Sony boom box I bought a few years ago. That boom box speaker has the ability to synch multiple units with one sound source. I don't know if Sony was the first, but it seems other vendors have the same type of capability.

I also have never seen anyone using reverse charging on a Samsung phone.
