Looks like they are aiming at a different market now. With the advent of spotify, I barely need 16GB, let alone 32GB of space yet Apple have significantly increased the cost of a touch beyond the scope of a younger adopters.

Any idea why they would do this?
It's not complicated. They're doing it to prevent the commoditization (not a word) of the iPod Touch. Keeping the 4G 16GB and 32GB models in the line-up helps to keep the 5G 32GB at a higher price point. Psychologically it will tear down the resistance to the higher-priced higher-capacity model.

Hi, the OP here.

Do you all realise the tiny amount extra it costs Apple to make a 32GB rather than a 16GB? For those of us that have no need for 32GB and want a base model...the cost has risen enormously and this is a well thought out plan from Apple which still none of you have made any sense of.

They are targeting a young market with those colours and saying you'll have to cough up a lot more for it.

32 is the new base model, it was 16 before and 8 before that... they know what they're doing and they know you have no choice if you want it bad enough you'll cough up the cash.

Wonder if $299 is going to be the new "base price" for the latest models going forward, and they'll start filling the $199 price-point with last years model.

That's the model they've been using on the iPads/iPhones for awhile now...

Apple's known for "well thought out plans" that net it more revenue. This isn't surprising (to me, at least).

As been mentioned multiple times in this thread, the minimum size for a newly designed iPod Touch has always been 32Gb since the 3rd gen iPod Touch (the 8Gb 3rd gen iPod Touch actually was a 2nd gen design). Apple always leaves the smallest capacity iPod Touch one gen behind until they update it to the latest gen in the next upgrade cycle (a year later). Currently you can buy a 4th gen 16Gb iPod Touch or you can wait a year if you want a 5th gen 16Gb iPod Touch. You will never see another 8Gb iPod Touch released.

The OP is choosing not to reply to all the people showing him that the current pricing structure hasn't changed since the 3rd gen iPod release.
