There's two iPod Nanos, three iPod Touch, and still it's not enough.

You may have found a way to tackle one problem down (family), but what about friends? Are you going to buy iPads for them? I'm 20 years old, always out with friends, it's bound to happen that a friend will ask for my iPad to use. I don't have one yet and I am always asking my friend if I could borrow her iPad for web browsing and games. I never go through her stuff out of respect.

Well, I guess when you get to be 42 you'll learn to say "no" politely to your friends. :D

You can still access the iPod with Passcode lock on. Double tap home and you have iPod controls. No need to unlock.

Just lock it and tell them to skip tracks if they dont like what is playing.

I have tons of playlist though. But not everyone will be using it for music - what about web browsing? Games? You can't access those on password lock.

I wish I could do the same..... But for the purpose of keeping my kids from opening programs. I mean I have nothing to hide, and they are always under my supervision when they are using my tech toys, but they are ninja quick and have deleted emails, pictures, etc.

Unfortunately the only way I have of achieving this is by jail breaking.

It would certainly be a nice feature of iOS.

*sigh* A lot of people in this thread had mentioned jail breaking in order to get this password lock. I think I may end up taking that route. I really, really did not want to jail break my pretty new iPad though.

There's been speculations for some time about user accounts being added to iOS, hopefully with a guest login that restricts the user from accessing user data, Safari history and so on. iOS 6? Fingers crossed.

Well it took 4 months for the iPad 2 unfortunately.

Its going to be hard not to have full screen folders with pages.... apple really needs to get on that.

Speaking of jailbreak passcodes, I really enjoyed the tweak that would allow you to authorize a wifi network (like your home) to be passcode free, but otherwise activate it.

At home? No password. Accidently leave it sitting somewhere at work or even lose it? No snooping allowed.

When did this happen? I just found out too. I usually have to connect my iPod Touch, insert a password to get on Wifi but I just turned on my iTouch and it was automatically connected. I never connected my iPod Touch to my internet because I forgot the password and got lazy to call Rogers.

So I just downloaded the Private Photo Vault application. Surprisingly, it's very fast and easy to use. I take back my "it's such a hassle" comment.

The only thing I have left to ask, is when you import your photos to Photo Vault -- or any password lock application -- does this ruin the quality of the image? Or does it remain the same?

I don't think Apple is concerned with helping you keep your "private" photos private. That's what the Passcode lock does for the whole thing. If you have something on your iPad you don't want others to see, just don't give it to them. The iPad is a personal thing, like a wallet or a journal. If you want to show it off, keep your "private" stuff somewhere else. I'm thinking...

At times when parents have kids the kids want to use the iPad to play games on and I believe that passwords for certain areas like Photos and say emails can be off limits to their kids.

It's not that I have anything inappropriate on my iPod, but like I said above, it's just a privacy concern. The example I provided above is a perfect example. I don't want my co-worker looking at pictures of my friends and I on my iPod Touch when I strictly let him use it for the music. I don't feel the need to say "Here's my iPod Touch. By the way, don't go through my pictures, contacts, emails, and iMessages". That will make it seem like I'm hiding something and I don't feel the need to say it when he strictly said he wanted to use it for music. This is not the first time it's happened though. I get it - people are nosy.

been there before. It sounds easy to 'think' you can just say- 'dont go through my pics' but when in the situation, it just feels really awkward to have to say that.

Yep, and not only is it awkward, it probably makes them want to look at it even more because now they're suspicious. Because I know if someone said that to me... I would want to.

It would be nice if it just had a "guest" mode

Real Racing 2 HD has a guest mode which is nice for when friends want to play online without damaging your reputation.

Given that iPads are sometimes shared between people living in the same house it's only a matter of time before Apple recognises that and allow multiple logins like what we've had a PCs for sometime.

-Personal photos
-Personal email accounts
-Personal browsing history

That would be enough. Music and anything else can be shared or accessed through services like Spotify.

yes it is tempting lol. Even if you don't let someone borrow it. I've left my iphone on a counter before at the mall and it doesnt auto-lock until after 5min and some clerk was checking my Text messages!

I agree this could be improved. Apple already has "restrictions" in Settings that allows you to disable a few things like Safari and the App Store.

It would be better if you could enable "Restrictions" for any installed app, and allow the user to enter the Parental lock passcode to open the apps while the controls are enabled.

They could even put a timeout period so that when you are using it then it will just remember you are "logged in" ad not require a password for 15 minutes or so.

I wouldn't mind this for apps like Mail and Facebook.

I let my friends use my iPad. If anyone betrayed my trust by going through my email or messages, they wouldn't get to use it again.

Only a small number of friends are trusted enough to borrow it when I'm not around — but that's also because if I'm elsewhere I probably want my iPad with me anyway!

Amorya

I let anyone use my iPad - teachers, friends, co-workers, but that's only because 99% of the time, I will be with them. Like if we're having a lunch break I'll let them borrow it. But I'm not ALWAYS going to be looking behind their shoulder to see what they're doing.
