Before I bought the iPhone 4, i used to buy phones every 6 months to a year due to boredom. This is the only phone and ecosystem that has kept me content for my full contract term. Prior to owning the iPhone i had an iPod Touch and that sold me on the phone.

Stuff I like about the Android OS: Better Browsers. Atomic Web was the best browser I could find for the iPhone, but most browsers are better than that on the Android OS. It's nice to double tap on something and have the page almost magically know what you want zoomed in (it does a nice job of justifying the text, so you don't have to constantly scroll from side to side to read).

Is there anything else you like better about Android browsers than justifying text? I've never seen that issue on any mobile browser, regardless of platform.

I'm with DodgeV83. What's great about the Android browsers other than choice? I thought most of them were a pile. They worked ok at first, but eventually turned me off for one reason or another. I've found Safari to be the best mobile browser hands down. It renders quickly, looks good, and my favorite, tap the top to go to the top. I can't count how many times I wanted to go to the top of a long article and was left to scroll endlessly.

That's really interesting and I will check out the videos too! Thing is, I use the phone for the alarm for my bf who gets up way before I do. I usually wake up about an hour before the alarm goes off - we both seem to actually!

Have you tried it while sharing the bed with someone? I wonder how that affects it.

I can't wait to go through some of the other apps you listed. I am really concentrating on iPad apps for myself right now but I can see a lot of potential in your list, some I have never heard of.

In a nutshell, what I typically use on the phone is:
Standard phone, mail, safari and music

I have the Light app (flashlight). As silly as I thought it was, it's sure come in handy a few times!

I use the Weather Channel app more than the stock one (though I don't like the iPad version as much)

Usually Waze for navigation but I'm still playing with that. May try MotionX Drive during the summer.

Things is a todo that I bought for the laptop and the iPhone. I don't need it enough on the iPad to spring for that too though!

I use the standard clock as an alarm and timer.

Dictionary - great for pronunciation discussions :)

Stocks app so I can see how my AAPL is doing, along with my bank apps

I have a few shopping apps, one holds those stupid saver cards, a grocery list called ShopShop

I use What's On? every night for tv listings, and also IMDb

Facebook, a couple of local new stations (I don't like to watch the news but I will read the stories online).

Motion-X GPS - LOVE this app for hiking and biking

Sound Hound for getting the names of those songs I really should know

ISO500 - way cool pix. Use them sometimes as wallpaper.

Dropbox

Some things for work that work better on the iPad: SonicWall, PocketCloud (RDC app), Logmein, OverDrive (works great!). I signed up for SkyDrive but haven't used it yet.

Photoshare to push pix between the iPhone and iPad - but I've found that I can't email them direct from the album once they are copied over, I have to copy and paste. Or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, it's a bug.

I'm playing with some Notepad apps on the iPad these days too.

Nothing as cool as your stuff but I like them. :)

Those are some good apps you're using, thanks for sharing :)

You can still get useful information from a sleep tracking app, even while sharing a bed. It all depends on the positioning of the phone. That's one thing I liked about the Jawbone Up, you wear it on your wrist and it only wakes you up (vibration). Hopefully they work out the bugs soon!

I can't count how many times I wanted to go to the top of a long article and was left to scroll endlessly.

I can't say I ever find that to be a problem thanks to the extremely loose kenetic scrolling in (stock) Android. A single quick swipe puts me to the top of the page, whatever page I've been on.

Quick example vid of my iPad and Transformer on a long eBay listing below. Excuse the quality, I recorded it on my Titan in low resolution.

I'm not sure how things behave on customised builds of Android (if OEMs change the kenetic scroll in any way) but on AOSP or stock builds I've not found it to be an issue.

Good point. I only got a few days to use the Nexus S, so I don't quite remember stock Gingerbread. I had the Samsung Infuse for a bout two weeks. So i was stuck on Touchwiz on Froyo and I don't remember the kinetic feature. I then had the Motorola Atrix with Motoblur for about 4 months before i got sick of it since the Moto hardware was starting to act funny. That I do remember not having the option to scroll to the top easily. I was always griping about it.

Nice argument; to support your purchase. You start out saying both have pluses, and minuses. Then go on saying how much better your Android device is...nice balance /s.
At least he recognizes both have good points and bad. Not like your average iPhone fanboy who will stop at nothing to prove everything that doesn't come from Apple is absolute crap.

I guess that's the flip side of your average Fandroid who comes trolling here who tries to convince us that everything that Apple makes is crap.

Dear DodgeV83

Thank you for the great job you are doing with popularazing iOS platform. This is not an easy task. As I see, you started losing sleep and need a special app to monitor your sleep patterns. The temptation to switch to Android must be so strong that you decided to come up with very sophisticated excuses not to do it. Bravo!

But I think you are looking at this from a wrong angle. It's very difficult to compare 350K iPhone applications vs 400K application for Android phones. You'll never accomplish this. Just keep it simple. iPhone is nothing else but a small computer with a set of built-in peripherals. SO is Android phone. The only difference is that Android phone (the best ones anyway) has faster processor, more memory (both RAM and flash memory), bigger screen with higher resolution. It mau also have camera with higher resolution and pressure sensitive pen. Because of that, on Android phone you can do all the things you do on iPhone but faster and easier.

I also have a piece of advice for you. Do not do photography and videography on the phone. This is just a waste of time. Phone cameras were not created for that and their screens are just too small. You can do all this work on a real computer much faster and get better results. It's OK to snap pictures for facebook using the phone but if you care about the picture enough to invest your time in post-processing - do it with a real camera and real computer. All the great pictures that you posted - this was possible to do on computers decades ago (probably even before you were born). If you absolutely have to do it on the run - at least buy Samsung Galaxy Note.

So I took the day off yesterday, bought some nice flowers and made the 4 hour trip to see the girlfriend. Used Find My Friends to figure out where I should go (is she working late?), without tipping her off that I was coming, and positioned myself perfectly to surprise her. I knew exactly when she was coming, and had the flowers out with the camera rolling as she came around the corner.

Its the little things :)

Some of these apps/things are a little out there, but excellent post. I knew the potential of the iPhone and what it can do, but I didn't even know some of these things existed.

This is exactly how I could imagine someone using their iPhone as their computer would.

Others might call this stalking, lol.

This "little thing" obviously was copied by Apple from Google. The original thing is called "Google Latitude". Google version is a better tool in that it is tightly integrated with Google Maps thus making it easier not just to locate your girlfriend but also to figure out what exactly she is doing there (for example, dining out or having her car serviced etc.) When it comes to location, maps etc. Google is your friend. Apple? Just a pretender.

Also, this example is a good demonstration of why closed ecosystems are bad for you. To benefit from using Find My Friend, your girlfriend has to have an iPhone (about 30% of girls with smart phones). Google Latitude is available on Android and iOS (about 90% of girls with smart phones). Try working harder to make sure your current girl friend does not dump you or your Find My Friends benefits might be over.

Find My Friends is much smarter than Google Latitude. Google Latitude constantly runs in the background, causing a significant battery drain.

Find My Friends only activates when someone actively requests the phone's location, then immediately turns off.

Running Google Latitude 24/7 kills battery life too much to be an option...I know you guys are going to hate me for saying this, but this really is an example of Apple taking an existing technology and making it usable.

No hate, just helping a brother to understand how technology works. You are wrong again. Applications improve constantly. One major battery drain issue in iOS version of Latitude was fixed a few years back (in version 2.0.1). Recently Google Maps for Android was updated and this update significantly improved battery life. Quote: "Google Maps for Android has been updated to version 6.2, and the main feature of the new release is better battery life for Latitude and location history users. Now you’ll be able to let your friends stalk you for longer periods of time."

OP - great informative post, thanks for taking the time to write it.

Cynics - why the smart assed remarks? ... This is a forum where people share views and idea's, when done with some class it's fun ... no need to insult people or put people down, that's getting a little old around here.

I'm sorry if you felt my question was an insult. Did you read my further comment or just ignore it?

Are you sure HE said everything Apple makes is crap or are YOU saying he said everything Apple makes is crap?

Oh shoot! I didn't say something anti android! Now I'm going to get yelled at to stay on topic. :)

I admit roles reversed I'd be a little creeped out if my girlfriend showed up to some random place I was at with a present. Lol

Lol agreed. I'd never use it in a weird way like that, we only use the app in ways we've agreed to beforehand. :)

Hey, I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong, but I don't think I am here :)

I said Google Latitude constantly runs in the background, killing battery. You responded by essentially saying, "The application has been upgraded multiple times, significantly improving battery life."

Your statement, even if 100% correct, does not prove me wrong. The app as currently designed, runs in the background 24/7. Just because the battery life has improved, does not mean it isn't still bad.

Look at the reviews for Google Latitude on the AppStore (can't find any reviews on the Android store, as it seems to be integrated into Maps), you will find many complaints about the app killing battery life. Considering its always on in the background, it's completely logical. The app constantly keeps location services on:

Apparently, the battery saving updates have decreased the accuracy of the location information, relying on cell positioning instead of GPS positioning. There have been complaints of the location data being off by miles.

Considering the poor accuracy, and constant drain on battery life, I honestly can't see any argument for using Latitude over Find my Friends.
