I thought Intel was on track to release the 22nm variants of Sandy Bridge later this year ...

Production will start late this year but release will most likely be in CES 2012, just like before.

There are coming new CPU's for the desktop market this year, because only the mainstream CPU's have been released . The high end Sandy Bridge CPU's for the desktops has not been released yet ( the 6-core and 8-core Sandy Bridge desktop CPU's ).

So I wouldn't rule out new laptop CPU's this year too.

Let me know when laptops can take a 130W CPU. The chips coming late this year are for desktop and servers, not laptops. Mobile lineup is already out and has been since January. The only possibility is a successor of Clarksfield, i.e. a 6-core mobile CPU but we would be looking at a ridiculous TDP and price tag, so something not for MBP. That is just speculation and I doubt Intel will even release something like that. IB will be so close anyway.

Where did I say about putting desktop CPU's in laptops? Desktop Sandy Bridge CPU's and laptop CPU got released in January. New Desktop Sandy Bridge CPU's are going to come, so it's possible new laptop CPU's will come also as they were released around the same time. ( they can simply be quad cores also )
