email sucks. people never check it, and what if you don't know someone's email address?

on facebook, you can just look them up by their name and send them a message. it puts everything in one place. much easier.

I check my email pretty much every hour. I send about 30 emails a day. Facebook mails me when someone sends me a mesage via facebook. These emails get redirected to a folder of their own.

At the moment, I have 200 facebook message notifications in there. None of them have been checked. You want me? Email me, or text me or send me a letter. Don't do it thru facebook. I'm not interested in what you had for breakfast.

That said, there's an interesting divide here between these who download all their email to their own computer, and those who depend entirely on webmail and other online-only communications. For me, Mail.app searches through 5 years of email instantly, in the blink of an eye. That's too precious to give up.

I use Facebook merely as a place to keep my contact information for others (read: e-mail) up to date, but sending me a message there is a pretty good way to be ignored. Not intentionally - I'm just rarely there.

I'm one of those that just uses Gmail. I might have to wait a second or two to search, but that doesn't really bother me.

I use Facebook to play farkle. I couldn't care less about the tools who are on it alongside of me. All I know is that facebook has me wondering why half of the time. Why do I care if you're cooking dinner or if your boyfriend and you are going antique shopping? Why do you want to be my friend after 20 years of no contact? Why do I want to be your friend if when you send me a request you remind me we went to school together and I have to look you up in an old yearbook to determine who you are? Why do I have 50 friends (random number) on FB and 1 friend IRL?

Yeah **** you facebook, but thanks for farkle. :D

And before anyone asks, I am not bitter about FB, I just don't get the whole point behind giving a play by play of your life one line at a time (ie: status).

It started in the mid-80s with the concept that all kids are 'special'. Now they all want their 5 seconds of fame (think the 'celebrity' wanna-bes who crashed the White House state dinner the other night) and think that their extremely mundane lives are somehow 'important'.

none of you are in college I guess.

facebook should have stayed just for college students.

Don't you mean junior high extended?

LOL yes. Oddly, my joining of FB began about 2 years after I completed grad school. I couldn't fathom dealing with such nonsense during that time. :D

Jessica is sitting on her couch, drinking rum and coke, and watching Smallville.

I prefer a quick and dirty e-mail.

Facebook can get cumbersome. I have a friend who insists on sending me messages through the game "YoVille", so I have to log on to Facebook, clic the notification icon to see if I got any messages, load my YoVille virtual apartment, her avatar materializes, then a graphic of a letter floats from her avatar to mine (complete starry graphics and a chiming sound affect), then the letter opens and she says something like, "how was your weekend?"

It was cute at first but sheesh! If I tell her to stop and just send an e-mail I know her feelings would get hurt.

I'll have to agree here. I've actually had to drag out yearbooks and search for these people requesting me. Some weren't even smart enough to use their maiden names which was even more annoying. The results were really bizarre. People I never knew back then, requesting. People I knew, unfortunately, requesting me.

Not much substance really. I use FB mainly to keep up on what some family and real friends are up to but rarely update my status.

I'd like to use Gmail more - I'm looking into using Gmail as a host for my IMAP accounts, but I couldn't use it as my primary email interface, as I'm often without internet access on my laptop.

I have EDGE data access via my phone or 3G modem dongle, but that's much slower than a desktop broadband. Sometimes even EDGE / 3G isn't available.

Facebook isn't much use if you have a slow or unreliable connection.
