I watched the JustJosh podcast yesterday. He literally recommended people not to buy the Neo. But instead get a MacBook Air, and use that until the Neo 2 is out. Then get the Neo 2.
This does does not support your assertion that: "Lots of Neo buyers are returning their Neos because they know once the neo 2 comes out shortly theirs will be obsolete and worth pennies on the dollar." The fact that Apple is backlogged for weeks with shipping orders is evidence to the contrary. Unless you have evidence of unusually high return rates for the Neo driven by fear of a new release......just move on.....

Anyone who would buy a MBA M5 now, and then swap it for an inferior Neo 2 when it comes out honestly needs their head examined (Unless they are desperate for the slightly smaller footprint or notch-less display).

Probably meant to buy a used one at an equivalent price as the current Neo

Only reasonable factor being cost. I like the Neo as it's playful and opens the door to macOS to many who were previously shuttered.

According to Tech Crunch, THIS:

"So in the first few weeks on sale, Apple’s laptop lineup reportedly sold like this:

  • MacBook Neo: 1.1 million units
  • MacBook Air with M5: 900,000 units
  • MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max: 550,000 units "

The Neo is prefect for me. I am not a big laptop user but it is a great emergency backup to my iMac and iPhone. I fire it up about twice a month just to keep it updated. I did take it with me on vacation and it worked great!!! The only wish I have for the Neo is a backlit keyboard.

im actually surprised the macbook air is as close as it is to the sales of the neo. I figured it would be a bigger gap considering the price difference. I would be curious how that figure changes next quarter

The numbers compare sales for the release window of each device. This isn’t saying Apple sold 1.1M Neos, 900K MBAs, and 550K MBPs at the same time.

yes but they were released on the same date, so in this particular instance, this would be the accurate number for that time period

Yeah I’m an idiot. I conflated the MBP M5 non-Pro from last year with the ones released in March.
lol, i figured that's where you were coming from.

Only thing i can think of is there were still more on the fence about getting it into they seen some more real world reviews of its usability. That's why i'm curious if this gap will be bigger next quarter now that it's more established on its realistic usability. But then it's been plagued by availability issues now

Would be interesting to see what numbers where last year when there was no Neo.

You also have to factor in the long wait times for the Neo

yea the availability is definitely a big issue that will hold down the sales numbers down. Plenty of people that chose not to order and are waiting for better availability

Got my Neo today. Put it through some paces, and just got back from the Apple Store to return it.

Why I returned it:
  • The screen size is just a little bit too small for my liking. The 13.6” MBA size is a better size for me. I could sort of live with this, if it wasn’t for:
  • The screen quality is just not good enough for me. Two main issues with it: the viewing angles are noticeably worse than a MBA and MBP screen and the clarity and crispness of the text and graphics is noticeably not as good as a MBA or MBP. Everything looks slightly blurred on screen in comparison to Apple’s Pro devices and even compared to the MBA.
The Neo’s screen made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I can’t go to a screen like that when I use devices like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPad Pro M5, the MacBook Pro M series, and a M3 MacBook Air.

I did side by side comparisons with the same content as well just to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.

Overall really nice device though. Great build quality, nice keyboard and trackpad, decent sounding audio, ran apps well, etc.

UPDATE: I BOUGHT THE NEO BECAUSE I AM LOOKING TO REPLACE MY 15” M3 MBA WITH A SMALLER DEVICE AS THE MBA IS MY NON-WORK PERSONAL LAPTOP. I BOUGHT THE NEO TO PUT IT THROUGH ITS PACES AT HOME OVER A SEVERAL DAY PERIOD, NOT A FLEETING HANDFUL OF MINUTES IN A RETAIL STORE. I INTENDED TO KEEP IT AND DON’T REGULARLY RETURN PRODUCTS TO APPLE. THE SPECS OF A SCREEN ARE NOT ENOUGH TO KNOW AHEAD OF TIME WITHOUT USING THE DEVICE WHETHER IT’S ACCEPTABLE OR NOT.
In a perfect world Apple would have resurrected the MacBook 12.

I had iPad Mini 7 / MBA 13 and decided screen quality was my jam and traded in for iPad Pro 11 and MBP14.

Ultimately the Neo, while it meets its majority market perfectly, is just Apple's gateway drug into the Apple ecosystem.

Yes, and no . . . Obviously it is a Gateway Drug meant to cause an Apple addiction. But for many of us, already in the Apple Circus, it's just a wonderfully capable computer meant for "non-power" users, with Apple quality, and at a very reasonable price.

It's a bloody $599 Apple laptop. It's an incredible machine for that price. It's a breakthrough Apple product at that pricepoint. Screen will never be as good comparing to a Mac almost twice the price. But it's good enough. I will definitely get one if it was lighter. I need a second ultralight weight Mac laptop to throw in my back when cycling to work. My 15inch MBA is a bit heavy. I would love it if the bought back the same form factor as the old MacBook 12in with these specs.

You should try it in your backpack - I throw mine into my EDC backpack and barely feel the weight. Of course, I'm not bicycling with it lol - -

The reason I will not get a Neo is that it is overpriced with this new price increase, and the screen is very small.
Know it's the current market but...

Little value to buy a Mac in my region unless used professionally as they are never discounted. I knew this was coming so replaced most of my HW 2025, barring my MBP as that will remain serviceable for a good while. TBH would have been more appropriate to raise the 256 model by less as it has half the ram of the 512. But both models are increased by $100... Apple being Apple.
