I watched the JustJosh podcast yesterday. He literally recommended people not to buy the Neo. But instead get a MacBook Air, and use that until the Neo 2 is out. Then get the Neo 2.
This does does not support your assertion that: "Lots of Neo buyers are returning their Neos because they know once the neo 2 comes out shortly theirs will be obsolete and worth pennies on the dollar." The fact that Apple is backlogged for weeks with shipping orders is evidence to the contrary. Unless you have evidence of unusually high return rates for the Neo driven by fear of a new release......just move on.....

Anyone who would buy a MBA M5 now, and then swap it for an inferior Neo 2 when it comes out honestly needs their head examined (Unless they are desperate for the slightly smaller footprint or notch-less display).

Probably meant to buy a used one at an equivalent price as the current Neo

Only reasonable factor being cost. I like the Neo as it's playful and opens the door to macOS to many who were previously shuttered.

According to Tech Crunch, THIS:

"So in the first few weeks on sale, Apple’s laptop lineup reportedly sold like this:

  • MacBook Neo: 1.1 million units
  • MacBook Air with M5: 900,000 units
  • MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max: 550,000 units "

The Neo is prefect for me. I am not a big laptop user but it is a great emergency backup to my iMac and iPhone. I fire it up about twice a month just to keep it updated. I did take it with me on vacation and it worked great!!! The only wish I have for the Neo is a backlit keyboard.

im actually surprised the macbook air is as close as it is to the sales of the neo. I figured it would be a bigger gap considering the price difference. I would be curious how that figure changes next quarter

The numbers compare sales for the release window of each device. This isn’t saying Apple sold 1.1M Neos, 900K MBAs, and 550K MBPs at the same time.

yes but they were released on the same date, so in this particular instance, this would be the accurate number for that time period

Yeah I’m an idiot. I conflated the MBP M5 non-Pro from last year with the ones released in March.
lol, i figured that's where you were coming from.

Only thing i can think of is there were still more on the fence about getting it into they seen some more real world reviews of its usability. That's why i'm curious if this gap will be bigger next quarter now that it's more established on its realistic usability. But then it's been plagued by availability issues now

Would be interesting to see what numbers where last year when there was no Neo.

You also have to factor in the long wait times for the Neo

yea the availability is definitely a big issue that will hold down the sales numbers down. Plenty of people that chose not to order and are waiting for better availability
