Yeah I wouldnt be too thrilled about that either considering the screen is the only thing you look at.

Hmmm, to sell my gen 1 32gb and go to gen 2 16gb or not...

Just got it a few weeks ago, I really think after analyzing YouTube videos, it's not a worthy update. PLus I really like my Incase book jacket grey stand/case combo.

The only tempting ipad 2 cases are the incase book jacket for ipad 2 and switcheasy canvas. but canvas looks better.

Don't forget about the STM Skinny. That's what I've ordered. Look up the STB skinny thread on the Accessories subforum. There is a 20% off coupon from STM directly.

I got my 1st gen 64GB iPad 3G in January because Softbank started subsidizing the cost of the iPads with 2 year data contracts, presumably to clear stock for the 2nd gen.

It'd be nice to have the cameras I guess, although I have a better one on my iPhone already.

I haven't had hands on with a 2G yet but I haven't noticed the slightest bit of lagginess in the keyboard on my 1G. I also use Garage Band a lot and haven't noticed too much lag there either.

There is no argument that the iPad 2 is thinner and faster. If you can get a great deal on the 1G though, as I did, there's no reason not to consider it as well.

I was considering the iPad 2, but now with this clearance sale that AT&T is currently having. I will be ordering my iPad 1 1st thing tomorrow morning. Long as I can browse the net and use a few apps without issue I'm good for the time being. I'm sure I will upgrade to the iPad 2 later on this year, preferably after my wedding.

every way?

Your original must have been a lemon considering the fact that there are components that didn't change between the generations, like the LCD panel, wireless radio and GPS. :p

Agreed. The iPad 2 is better if you are a power user.

In the rationalization department...

Was looking at iPad2s (from a distance) since they came out but wanted to impulse buy one at a store - where none were to be found. When I put in the order online and looked at the price of $900+ after tax and some accessories (and that without a case) I could not pull the trigger. I thought for the price I should get an Air (I know they are different but still).

Then AT&T started what amounts to a half price sale, $429 for refurb 64Gig 3G and I decided that was the correct price for an iPad that cost twice that a few short months ago. So, we will see if that was the right decision or not. In the meantime I am shopping the discounted accessories. I know the iPad2 is faster and has some improvements but an awful lot of reviews say that if you have the iPad 1 you won't see much benefit from upgrading. So, as long as the iPad 1 feels right I will just avoid iPad 2s for awhile.

I have noticed that the iPad 1's screen looks more like an old CRT tv compared to the new ones. It has a strange glow. Anyone else?

Congrats! I think you'll be pleased with your purchase. I know the common advice has been to not upgrade to an iPad 2 if you already have one and to buy the iPad 2 if you don't but with the increasingly great offers for the 1st gen clearance I don't think that's always the case.

If you're really into 3D gaming or need the cameras then maybe. Otherwise the 1st gen at a huge discount is still a great option. As always, it's only about your own personal budget, needs, etc.

Agreed.

I've got my first ipad coming today. It's a refurbed first generations 16 gig wifi and it will be my first purchase in the tablet world and I am excited. Got it at the refurbed price of $349. Always wanted an ipad and am looking forward to the hours of gaming, netflix watching, web browsing, kindle reading, and the little bit of emailing I might be doing with it.

The processing power of the iPad 2 is tempting for the games that I will play but I'm sure the iPad 1 will handle Infinity Blade, Angry Birds, and Bejeweled just fine :). I have facetime with my iPhone 4 so the cameras aren't necessary. A HUGE plus is having a second iOS device so that when I get home I can not be bothered by calls/texts from people I don't want to be bothered with while at home. I might ACTUALLY use my iPhone4 as just a phone now.. who woulda thought? :)

....and no colors. B/W TV CRT display on iPad 1 is really awfull these days. This strange glow also reminds me the E.T. movie.. Great!

I was not planning on upgrading my original iPad but the new one is more stable. Whenever I use Atomic web browser on the iPad 1 it would freeze and close the app. Very annoying!
On the iPad 2, it has never done it yet. This alone is worth the upgrade.
Although I can't imagine what the iPad 3 would have, I think I would be happy to hold on to my iPad 2 for a few years.

I finally got my grubby little hands on an iPad 2. It is much quicker in scrolling and moving between apps. Yes, if all you do is surf the web you will not feel much of a difference. But if you are a power app user the iPad 2 is the way to go.

I have some moderate light leak, which was a non-issue on the iPad 1.

actually the new nitro-JavaScript engine on the iPad 2 should make web surfing experience much faster.

While the iPad 2 with its faster memory and processor obviously beats the 1G, the Nitro engine in iOS 4.3 improved Javascript performance by almost 3 times on the 1st gen iPad as well.

I've got no complaints.

Yes web surfing is about the same experience in iOS 4.3, but there is a world of difference for power apps such as GarageBand.

So how's photo booth in iPad 1G? :d

As previously mentioned, if the cameras or 3D gaming matter to you then you'll definitely want to go for the new iPad. Personally, I have Photobooth on the Mac and rarely use it although it's fun.

I don't miss the cameras because I have them on my iPhone, including a better rear-facing one than the iPad 2 sports.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to make this into a pissing contest between the iPad generations. I've already said that decision is only about your individual needs.

GarageBand runs adequately for me on my 1G. Obviously it's snappier on an iPad 2 though.

I'm thinking about jailbreaking my iPhone so I can try GarageBand on it as well. ;)

Your right, even more, I didn't notice that! The iPad has 256 MB DDR RAM, whereas the iPhone has 512 MB of eDRAM. Didn't know the iPhone was more powerful than the iPad :O

Kinda sorta. Remember that iPhone is also sporting an A4 chip but running at 200mhz slower than in the ipad1.
