iPhone's are definitely more expensive on contract than Galaxy S2s and even Galaxy S3s are as well as other Android handsets here in the U.K. and typically the contract is also less generous with texts, minutes and data. Like it or not the Galaxy S2 and S3 are as good as the iPhone 4 and 4S respectively and you can get them on contract with better texts, minutes and data allowances for an average of £5 a month less or more.

The biggest downfall to owning an Android handset is the shocking amount of time it takes for updates to reach a handset. Need I remind you all of the Android 4.0 ICS update fiasco for Galaxy S2 where networks kept delaying its release, and by the time they were finally released for most networks here in the U.K. it was well over 6 months AFTER the OS had officially been released by Google. iPhone users will never have this problem.

Also, support for Android OS updates typically stops after about a year on Android handsets. This is also true for the Galaxy S2 which is now a year old and it is rumored that Android 4.1 Jellybean will not be supported on the device. iPhones on the other hand enjoy updates that are compatible with devices that are two or even three generations old, although not all features are supported.

What pains me to see on iPhone though is the static nature of the device i.e. lack of customisation and widgets and tbh Google Maps really is fantastic and even with iOS 6 around the corner, based on what I've seen I still think Google Maps has the edge due to cool but useful features such as Street View.

This is coming from an Apple 'enthusiast' who owns a Galaxy S2.

And if you think an iphone does equate to wealth, then you don't know what wealthy is.

Exactly, I know many wealthy people that still insist on owning a BlackBerry. Your phone preference has nothing to do with your tax bracket.

Do people really think the iPhone is a symbol of wealth and social standing?

I don't think that way about the iPhone until I'm standing behind somebody buying diapers & baby formula with a food stamp card while texting on their iPhone 4s.. That gets under my skin for some reason. But that's just a peeve I have about economic priorities.

x10.

Material processions don't always go hand in hand with wealth at all. Some people just like to have money and spend it on what the like. My father for example is a general contractor that drives an old Tundra and uses an LG dumb phone.

The controls to his indoor pool are more complicated this his phone.

I would have a hard time to not think the same thing either..but we have to be careful with that mindset...because some people, like me, are on our parents phone plan...which does help out graciously!

True but is it more important to be on an expensive phone plan with a phone that costs a few hundred dollars, or on a cheaper phone plan with just about any free phone to choose from and use that few hundred dollars on food and baby supplies.

It gets under MY skin because in this case that's a person making bad financial decisions and even though it's none of my buisness it makes me weep for the future of my fellow man.

This thread went from a discussion on why people will always stick with iPhone to how the iPhone is/isn't a status symbol in places around the world.

At the end of the day, it's what you and I expect from out device.
I love Apple product, they have created some amazingly beautiful products. They have also made some Tragic Fails. The fact remains.... what I call fail, YOU may love... what the world fawns over?, I may see as a fail..
Hence the term...." Not all things to all people" we see this Time and Time again, regardless of Manufacturer.

Job's was a genius.... as was Einstein.... as was Newton..... and there will be more to follow........In our "Timeline..." we have just begun... in times to come people will shake there head at device's like iphone/ipad...... just as we do at the abacus ..........

I've had a iPhone since the 3G ; loved them all. However when something comes out that I like better I'll switch. I gotta say with what's coming out of the Android market this will be the closest year yet, time will tell.

The ecosystem is one of the big reasons for me as well. iPhone, iPad, and MBP; one big happy family. The stability of the OS is another along with their updates. The biggest thing I hated about Android when I had it was Google would release an update and it would be north of six months before it filtered down to the actual phone after it got through the OEMs and carriers, regardless of who's fault it is that's just unacceptable. With Apple it's available the day it's released.

The one thing I don't like about Apple is only one model. I do with they would start having two, one big screen and one small. Think a Pro and regular. Naturally to keep retina the Pro is going to be more expensive, I can live with that. That way whether you prefer a small screen of the current device or want a larger one your covered. It'll never happen as it would cut into Apple's profits due to lower deals on components and two production lines but I can wish.

iPhone as a status symbol and wealth, in KY? lol. btw one of my best friends is one of the wealthiest families in KY, give you a hint, "coal" and "Hazzard" ;) . Has both Android and iOS, like myself.

Not sure what your talking about getting all different accounts and this and that, you make it sound like it's impossible for an Android to synch or work with any Apple stuff/Ecosystem. Funny how I have no problem syncing any of my stuff either from iTunes or on my Mac's to my GSII, and in most cases faster and easier (gotta love mounting the device as a drive and moving files quickly to where I want). The one advantage the Apple ecosystem does have is if you have multiple iphones, and ipads, touch's etc, your app store apps can all be there, no biggie to me as I barely used my iPad2 anyway and sold it as I found myself going for the 13" Pro instead on the couch or traveling.

If you pay taxes, it IS (well, should be) your business. If you can afford a new smartphone and its accompanying plan, you can afford food and diapers without assistance. I understand wanting a phone for emergencies, but there are plenty of very inexpensive options available for that.

And to the OP, thanks for being stupid. You're only a teenager you say, so there's hope you can change I guess. I hope the attitude that you and your "friends" share about status isn't the norm with your generation.

And where the hell is the downvoting button? It's highly needed here. Have them both or get rid of them altogether.

Well I'll be the first to tell you that there are a lot of bad android devices out there. I wouldn't make assumptions based on phones that are two or three years old. I wasn't much of an android fan until I saw what ICS could do. I thought iPhone was king but once got a hold of a truly modern android handset I changed my tune.

agreed...the way a mac/appletv/iphone all work great with cloud computing and streaming is perfect, well will be with airplay on ML.

All of you are correct. The way I displayed the iPhone as a symbol of wealth is very incorrect. I guess a better way of saying something along the same lines is that iPhones are the in thing for teens. Almost every teen has an iPhone and if you don't then your just percieved differently. I mean sure when you all were teens there was some fad that everyone had and the people that didn't have it were percieved differently. Anyways, I mean Android and Apple both have the ups and downs and another reason I'll stick to an iPhone is because Apple makes the hardware and software. I wouldnt mind having an android but I hate how each manufacturer puts a weird skin over the original look of the android. If I had to get one it would either be the Nexus S or the Galaxy Nexus.

I'm from just south of Fort Knox. Like I said, it's more like a fad where if you don't have one you're looked at differently. And I have a feeling from your first sentence you've never explored Kentucky. We really aren't anything like the stereotype and the only "hill billies" are in eastern Kentucky which is far away from us. I'm only in Kentucky because of military but I still feel like I need to defend this place.

never understood why people say "everyone has an iphone" okay? and every one has the SS camaro too, but it's still a great vehicle. No matter what phone you buy, "everyone" is going to have it. and people think iphone is "too expensive" stores have them as low as $49 for iphone 4 and $149 for 4s . same price plan.:confused:

Uhh I've been there plenty of times, both poor and nice areas. Did you not see where I mentioned my buddy is in Hazard, one of the poorest areas around, but their fam is one of the wealthiest in all of KY.

I live in a wealthy area, but have never heard or seen somebody mention something like you describe with the iPhone and fad/status. Even my neighbors daughters, one has an 4 the other an GSII and their 13 and 15. I see plenty of teens with both OSs, actually more Android devices now when just a few years ago it was pretty much only iphones you saw with anyone and everywhere.

Maybe just your area, but there's a whole world outside of Fort Knox ;)

No matter what I say or how I try to explain myself someone will always try to prove me wrong and will always try to say that teens having a fad is a lie and that more teens are leaving iPhone and blah. All I'm saying is here at MY HIGH SCHOOL literally more than 50% of the people have an iPhone and the ones that don't always ask to play with mine and want one. But it's what ever because since I'm a teen I don't deserve the same respect as a full adult and must obviously not know much other than south of Fort Knox. Someone close this thread already.

Everyone give this kid a break! He does have something to say that is actually true for all of us Apple fans. Having a iPhone or owning any Apple product does come with it some level of prestige. What I mean by this is that Apple is a very well liked company... by millions across the globe. We as Apple product owners expect nothing but the best. We as Apple product owners spent our money for our products to be the best of which they are capable of. And these products do not come cheap. We all agree on this! So with that said there is a certain of level prestige that Apple has acquired. So anyone who purchases any Apple product should have the confidence that they are truly buying the best of whats out there right now.
