Because it's a flat out better experience. I upgraded to the iPad 2 and it's sooo much responsive and smoother than the iPad 1 or Xoom or Tab or Playbook. It's got great apps, games and support. Plus Apple seems to be 110% behind selling this product and supporting it fully. They have alot invested in this platform so I'm not worried it's a fly by night operation. They will still support the iPad 1 even when the iPad 3 comes out with iOS 6.

It seems other manufacture's are all over the place with their implementation, hardware and versions of Android, leading to an inconsistent experience and eventually complete abandonment and no software support since it seems the only way you can get Android OS updates is through the manufacturer.

When I pull my iPad out on the train ride home, the guy next to me with the Samsung Galaxy puts it away and just stares at the iPad...that's why the iPad is better. 😛

It really comes down to what you want to do with your tablet. Ipad is great for consuming media and running apps, but the web browser can't hold a candle to honeycomb 3.1 and without flash you won't be able to access numerous websites. No file system access means that you won't be getting much work done on it anytime soon either. While the ipad has better apps and more attractive design it's very restricted,so you only get whatever Steve Jobs thinks you need, while Google allows those who are interested to customize pretty much every aspect of the OS. To me iOS in it present form is not well suited for a tablet,it's really nothing more than a glorified app launcher with unintuitive multitasking implementation while honeycomb is robust enough to be a true laptop replacement for most people.

Prefer iPad because of the consistency of the iUniverse. ITunes, App Store etc.
Exchange of programs between iPhone, iPod and iPad. Also MobileMe counts in here.

And there are sweet little details like the magnet smart cover

Agreed. I love how everything integrates. My fav is that I view material from my iPad via AirPlay on Apple TV.

What is "another tablet"? There are:

Froyo&Gingerbread based 7" tablets: HTC Flyer, Nook Color, old Samsung Galaxy Tab, lots of cheap Chinese brands, etc. I suppose the Advent Vega falls somewhere between here and the Honeycomb tablets.

Honeycomb based 8.9 - 10.1" tablets: Moto Xoom, Asus Transformer, Acer Iconia, Samsung Galaxy Tab, etc.

Blackberry Playbook 7" tablet & upcoming 10" model

HP TouchPad coming soon with webOS

They all have different pros and cons. It's really hard to compare the iPad against "another" tablet without knowing what the comparison is. However two advantages stand out against any of these tablets: the iPad has the most apps of any tablet and iOS is the smoothest running OS of all these tablets.

I bought an iPad because I think it's a beautiful piece of hardware that allows you to interact with content in a compelling way. People say it's just a bigger iPod or iPhone -- I guess they're correct, but why is the same product but with a much bigger screen "just" a bigger product? With the screen size, the way you interact with content changes drastically. It's completely different.

I wanted to own a media consumption device like an iPad. I wasn't expecting it to change my life, and it hasn't -- but it's a very nice piece of hardware that fills a niche in my life. I'm happy with it, and happy to be aboard with what seems to be the next really big innovation in how we use computers in our lives.

For me, it was about functionality. Since I already own a MBP and an iPhone 4, the iPad was a no-brainer for me since I can seamlessly sync my apps, music, and videos from my iTunes library to the iPad. Organization is very important to me, so being able to sync my apps, music, and videos to my device of choice is something that weighs heavily with me when I consider an electronics purchase.

The reason to buy a tablet, whether iPad or any other, is to use it.

(Though no doubt there are many who bought the iPad just because it's fashionable, or whatever, but i'd ignore them).

So, to use a tablet, you need software that enables you to do what you want to do. The selection of apps for Android tablets is still very limited - yes you can run phone apps on it, but that's hardly making best use of the tablet format, just like I don't use any iPhone apps on my iPad.

The operating system is largely irrelevant - the OS should be the thing I see least of. I don't care much about what it looks like, whether I can put a flashy front end on it, or make it look different to everyone elses. I just want it to enable me to use the apps that I want to use to do the tasks I want to do. If it can't, then i'm not interested. And no other tablet yet has the apps available.

Also, promises of things to come will not make me buy it. If i really need email, and the PlayBook won't do it,vthen i'd only consider it when it's actually available - not before. Similarly there have been many Android devices announced that sounded good, but didn't appear for many months, if at all. A device that doesn't exist don't fill my requirements to be able to do stuff!

Apple has a very short time from announcing something to releasing it. That inevitably means that people compare a "coming soon" Android (for example) device against a 6 month old iPad. Often, the next iPad will be released and widely available before that announced Android tablet is even for sale.

So, in summary, I want to see actual devices with actual software, actual features and actual apps before I'll consider them. Promises, estimates and expectations aren't enough to make me buy.

I agree 100%with your comments. That is exactly why I bought the iPad.
