For some reason Apple is selling series 1 watches but not series 2. Anyone know why?

If Apple sold the Series 2 and Series 3, Series 2 would obviously be discounted and Would directly compete with the series 3, likely taking away sales of the Series 3 because they have so many similarities.

Series 2 is also uncomfortably close to Series 3 in feature set, aside from a faster processor and LTE (both of which people might not care about) if the Series 2 replaced the Series 1 as the low end, many more folks might buy the low end and that wouldn't be great for Apple.

With the Series 1 on the low end and Series 3 on the high end the difference is more stark... waterproof, swim metrics, GPS, faster processor, LTE and more.

The series 1 is underrated by most people.

I’d not buy one new, but immaculate used versions are available on various selling sites.

I even managed to sell my wife’s 38mm series 0 for the same price I bought a series 1. A nice free upgrade for her.

Apple might also be making the most use of the production line that's been making the first-gen and Series 1 watches. Their internal construction (system chips aside) is nearly identical. The major design change came with Series 2 and has continued through the Series 3.

My guess, then, would be to keep the same S0 factory (factories?) running to make S1 watches; and the factories that were making S2 are now making S3.

Only Tim Cook knows for sure.

The Series 1 has a plastic ("composite") back, while the Series 2 has a ceramic back. The Series 3 GPS model marks a return to the less-durable plastic ("composite") back.

Apple certainly wouldn't want people spending less money to get a model that is arguably more durable.

Albeit, there are differences between composite and ceramic backings for durability reasons, but I don't buy into the argument that the composite back is much "Less durable" , because the watch is either on your wrist or on the charger. Ceramic certainly is much more difficult to scratch, but I always found the composite backing to holds fairly well in terms of durability. It also makes a difference on how someone treats their watch as well regardless of what materials are used.

For me however, the feeling of wearing a watch with ceramic back is arguably better than composite back. I seem to have some sort of allergy to plastic interface on my skin. Not sure. Another important reason I choose to upgrade my watch to cellular version.

That's likely true for some that might have allergy reactions to composite/plastic. So in your situation, ceramic would likely be the better option.

I agree, it’s all a marketing gimmick.

The composite back is more than sufficient. I’ve had 2 with composite backs and one with ceramic and can’t really see a difference.

The ceramic back on my S3 seems to need much more cleaning than the composite one (which luckily I’m not allergic to). On the whole, though I’m enjoying the look of the stainless steel as a change, I liked the composite back and glass screen just fine.

I don’t feel I need to do extra cleaning except mopping with cloth. Maybe rinse a little bit with water, but that’s about it.

Thanks for this excellent se2 question.
I’ve only today been advised to start some excerises/stretching etc in a local gym very soon
I searched for apwatchse2 via 2 u.k. retailers-only found se1+se3-very different from 2017 when se2 was an excellent price point.
I’ll continue reading this thread and maybe your se2 question will be answered.
Personally I’m not in se3 market at all.
Maybe I’ll settle for that white/silver se1 I viewed earlier...

The S3 is cheaper than the S2 was at launch.

The S2 was £399 and series 3 is £359 (GPS model)

Series 1 launched at £299 and was reduced slightly to £279.

If you’re wanting a cheap watch, used S1 prices are pretty low. I bought my wife an immaculate S1 38mm for £120.

I was only considering se2 late 2017 I don’t disagree with your launch costs
Seriously considering se1 new@249 U.K. pounds.
A few days to decide.
Think I’ll avoid eBay etc and purchase with 1 day delivery from. Argos or Curry’s.
Did take a 5 min review of entry se3s@3xxx not a 2018 model for myself
A simple se1 should suffice for gym excersises etc. Nice tech purchase early 2018 my only tech purchase this year!

I believe it'll canabalize the s3 sales number. For most people they'd probably keep buying the s2 when the change is not super significant. Heck I'm looking for an s2 but the prices seem to be hovering close to s3 prices. I would have loved it if it is the same price as an s1 model.

Recently, I just found out that the Series 2 was discontinued for the better purpose of the sales for Series 3 and I am curious to know whether Apple will still support Series 2 with update wise?
Of course they will, the S0 still gets updates. Apple only stops providing updates when the hardware can no longer keep up.

But they don’t stop providing updates even when the hardware is already on its last leg. Aka, having noticeable difficulties handling software.

Well kind of. When the hardware is so out of date, updates stop. S0 will probably not get watchOS 5.
