Oh, I forgot to mention font choice. It would be so much easier on the eyes if we could choose between say 4 font choices for messages.

You can adjust the text size in Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes in the Accessibility settings.

Because people are dumb. iPhone is dumbed down for the mass population. Have you seen a 58 year old mom trying to use a PC? It's way too complex for them, they've missed the boat on technology. Yet, I see them use iPhones everywhere. Why? because it's simple and you can't really mess up the software. Heck most people don't even know you can upgrade iOS on their iPhone4

This.

While I LOVED widgets on my old Android and I would love them on my 4s, I can't see Apple adding them anytime soon. The move options you give the normal (non-tech) customer, the more complicated you make it. Yes, I understand its not complicated to most of us, but when you start stacking more and more options into the OS the normal user has a higher possibility of being overwhelmed and becoming frustrated.

I don't get it.
If you want to put in the effort to customize then jailbreak the device.
Its so simple and idiot could do it.

Its really not even an issue except for those who want to make it into an issue because they are looking for something to troll about or are too lazy to plug their phone into their computer and click a button to jailbreak it.

Not sure why anyone would thank Apple for not letting them customise their device as their own!

Probably because in this way we can spend our time doing something more sensible rather than wasting it on meaningless customization. ;)

I understand all of your replies, and agree with some of your points. The uniformity, familiarity, ease of use, etc. These are all great things.

But do you really think it would kill ios to add say 4 fonts (not size, fonts), and 4 color schemes? We have been staring at the same bluish-grey color scheme for years now.

If that is what you want then jailbreak.
Takes 2 minutes.
Whats the big deal?

Apple like to dictate how stuff should be done/used. I'm not bashing, I use all apples stuff but I'm just saying it how I see it. They think the iPhone interface should look a certain way, so they make you have it that way. Its the same principle with their syncing. I remember way back before iphones etc, it always used to bug me that I HAD to use iTunes to put songs on my iPod, this was back when my library was set up in windows media player, and every other audio device out there let you drag and drop, or sync in media player etc. Apple want their stuff to be used a certain way and they go out of their way to make sure people do it. This isn't a bad thing, the sheer ease of use their products have is unrivaled in today market I think, but lack of customisation is also a result of this.

The "bluish-grey color scheme" is in 6 of the default apps. Any others can be customized by the developer. Just wanted to put your comment in perspective a little bit.

I know, but messages is a heavy use for me, and it's one of the things that is not customizable in any way. I would like to change the font and bubble colors.

It's 2012 - you'd think that technology would've advanced to the point where we can have a good phone with a little creativity. Apple, priding itself on catering to artists and musicians, should probably be a little more open to creativity.

There would end up being a LOT of options if you were allowed to customize everything. It would get confusing for some people. Still, I think they should at least let us change the bubble colors for messages and a few other things. It could use some more options.

Making the phone work the way you want it to is meaningless now? Ooookay then. :)

Yeah, it is. I've customized plenty of things in Mac OS X, just a bunch of meaningless UI things. It would be nice to change a few things in iOS (can't go overboard or else it's too nonuniform), but it doesn't matter.

I think it's related to the reason why MySpace didn't grow, and Facebook (so far) has done well. Basically, most people suck at design. Give them free reign to change the design of something and while they might enjoy the process of customization, they essentially end up with a steaming pile of poo.

the major difference is, I'm not forcing anyone else to look at my iPhone. The way I customize my personal phone doesn't affect their experience in any way.

There's really no good reason for them lock down customization the way they do.

The billions of dollars they make every quarter might be an indication that they have a better understanding of the topic than you do. :)

that's irrelevant. Do you have any reason to believe they wouldn't make just as much (or more) if they DID allow customization?

This is true of Android as well. Yes, some of the customized Android devices out there are absolutely breathtaking. The ability to create dramatic looks is endless. But in reality, the majority of "customized looks" end up looking absolutely horrible.

Apple has spent a lot of time, money, and effort designing their signature "look." They don't really want Honey Boo Boo Child's mom changing the design into a pink & purple, polka-dotted, sparkly hot mess. That's what the phone case aftermarket is for.

HAHAHA, I think I just **** myself... hahahaha.

that's irrelevant.

Irrelevant? :D Their proven record of success is irrelevant compared to your opinion of what they should do? Good one.

Sure. All the products that do allow customization that don't make nearly as much money.

Why would hey risk it?

Risk what, exactly? They're not going to sell less phones by adding an optional feature... that's a ridiculous notion.

no, the lack of customizability is irrelevant to their proven record of success. It's not like they have the most popular smartphone BECAUSE it can't be customized. Use your head...

this would be a great point, if customization were the only difference between the products.

Apple doesn't need you to defend their decision. I have yet to see anyone offer a compelling reason why Apple doesn't offer customization options. "They have the best-selling phone!!!1" doesn't qualify, it just makes you sound like a rabid Apple fanatic.

Ummm...I didn't say those things...fix your "quotes"....

But yes, having the #1 selling phone means they are right and shouldn't mess with it...:p

Bluetooth

I've been wanting to change the name of my Bluetooth devices since my first iPhone. I stream music to a Sony Bluetooth to RCA receiver. I liked it so much I bought another one for another room. I wish I could rename them since they both have a non-cusomizable hardware name. I have to add them in the same order to keep the identical names straight.

they just want the interface simple. they don't want to make it complex yet. when apple is about to go down then maby they will add customization.

so much for the ...this is not an anti apple thread.

Probably not, but the ease of use is the biggest advantage. Watch a 3 yr old pick up the phone and find their game app..and start playing.

That is something the iPHone is famous for IMO.
