Doesn't iOS have a feature to repeat notifications? That way, if you miss one, it will repeat, and alert you that you have a message. You could do that until Apple designs an LED notification

My take on it is I'd actually quite like a subtle white indicator light.

I'm not too fussed but it'd be nice to have the option if they could build it into the glass so it's not obvious (like the sensors are)

Nobody needs LED for notifications. Apple made the right design decision, and now you see almost no modern phone with the technology.

LOL not sure if this is serious!!!!

Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC, Motorola, Nokia ect all include some form of notification be it LED or using the screen as in the case of Motorola & Nokia...sorry Microsoft.

The reason Apple won't add a small little LED or something is because of cost pure and simple.

If one LED and both the programming and circuity to get it to work would maybe cost them about 10 cents, now you times that 10 cents by millions you have your answer as to why they won't put one into the iPhone.

Having some form of LED notification, would be a godsend as i don't carry my 5S with me everywhere i go, so would like to know if I've missed anything without having to switch the screen on all of the time.

Also those how don't like having one on the iPhone then switch it off, but as some have mentioned if they did include one, those very same people that said they don't need one or said it be crap, they be the first to praise Apple for it so called innovation for including one.

Kills me how many fanboys & girls think everything Apple don't do is right and insult other people when they go against the grain of Apple, but soon as that idea comes about then it the best thing ever, like the larger screens for example. :)

I think it has a lot more to do with the whole "Apple aesthetic" than saving a few cents. Just look at how they shifted the Macbook's charging LED from the computer to its charger cable. That certainly doesn't save them on the cost of LED, since a cable is shipped with the system anyway… it may even cost more to manufacture it this way.

OP I'm actually with you on this one

So many people miss the point. Notification led isn't for when you get a notification while looking at the phone... It's more useful for when you've actually missed something and return to your phone. Yes you can wake the device and check but you wouldn't even have to if, for instance, the ring around the touch ID home button glowed when you missed something -- indicating there is something that requires your attention.

I'm not one of those people who constantly wake their device for no good reason and scroll around the home screen doing absolutely nothing. I see plenty of people like that out in public and it's, IMO, a bad habit. It would be nice to be able to look across the room at my phone sitting on the table and see the home button lit up, indicating I should walk over and check the phone l. There's been times when I left my phone alone for a while and missed a few texts before coming back in to grab it on my way out the house.

If you've ever seen the notification orb on the old Palm Pre you'd understand. That was a perfect l, subtle indication. I'm not fond of any of the dedicated notification LEDs on android phones.

I agree also. To me it doesn't harm the design at all. Enjoyed it on the S3.

Apple has coded people to check the phone periodically. Some people would like be alerted from an ever blinking LED, just in case, you know, they were not right next to the phone when a event occurred.

LED light... Never gonna happen.

Active display aka Moto X style notifications... Possible.

Yep, especially with the OLEDs getting better and better every year I could see Apple implementing it.

I'd really like a Notification LED or something Active Display like on my phone..

I don't see how it would hurt the design of the phone. A small LED under the glass would be unnoticeable if the user opted to leave LED notifications off.

LEDs on Android were helpful to me especially in business meetings.
- Pink Wife
- Turquois Kids
- Blue Email
- Green SMS

Going into meetings I would silence phone and use the LEDs:
Blue/Green - Didn't let the phone interrupt me. I'd check those afterwards.
Pink/Turquios - I would take a look to make sure nothing serious going on during a lull in conversation.

For those with no interest in using them--simple--leave them off. For those of us who see value, great. No way it's a cost issue. Think of the legitimate tech/costs associated with each revision.

seriously?

Interesting thread. I'm seriously considering jumping from an HTC M8 to the iphone 6. I have to say that no notification signal is a definite if not puzzling CON. Maybe it's just me but I miss initial notifications all the time. Maybe I'm cooking, working in the yard, doing some gaming, whatever. Hell, sometimes I miss notifications just working at my desk. It's nice to be able to just look at the phone and notice you missed something. THEN AND ONLY THEN do you need to wake up the phone to see exactly what was missed. Contrast this to a phone without such a signal (doesn't have to be an LED) and every time your attention was divided and you might have missed something you have to pick up the phone, unlock it, and check.
This use case is so common the only thing more astonishing than apple leaving out the feature is the number of people trying to convince that it's not useful. Major wtf.

I do think they look kind of tacky and I do think they would hurt the overall aesthetic of the iPhone. And I think it kind of goes against Apple's battle plan by giving users too much choice and customization.

That said, I definitely found them useful on my droid back in the day and I definitely find myself fiddling with my phone a whole lot more, checking for missed notifications. It is a bad habit that I need to get out of.

You mean to say there's no way to implement some kind of visual que that an event was missed without ruining the aesthetics of a phone? The rationalization of some of you borders on religious...

I will never understand, given the variety of ways your iPhone alerts you of messages (and the customization therein), why people are so adamant about a stupid little LED that tells you nothing more than "hey, you've got some type of alert".

Why does everyone have to resort to smears every time a differing opinion crosses their field of vision?

Personally I think the notion of putting a notification light on the device is retrograde. Just click the lock button.

There already is a visual cue - the display shows the notification and details (if you so choose) that help make a decision as to whether or not you want to respond.

Some blinky light doesn't tell me anything.

This is really the only thing I miss about Android: the colored notification LED pulses. It was so nice to miss a notification while I'm in the other room, and later notice a blue pulse indicating a missed call, green indicating a google chat message, etc.

I found that it led to less compulsive phone-checking on my part because it let me know if I missed something (and what I missed) no matter how long ago it occurred. On iOS if you miss a notification (other than a text, since you can do repeat notifications on those), you won't know it until you look at your phone again.

I don't get how anyone could say this isn't a useful feature, and it needn't be a big eyesore in the phone's body. It was barely visible on my old Android device (unless it was blinking, of course).

I agree that the Apple Watch will help a lot with this, though.

Here's proof positive of the influence Apple has over their customers minds, opinions and beliefs. It creates a consequence free Zone for Apple to operate within. They rely on Apple to guide them and keep them safe. Based on the massive profits Apple enjoys it proves how masterful Apple's hype is. Quite the accomplishments. I give Apple tremendous credit for setting the precedence of influence over their customers.

But not nearly as hilarious as newbs who breeze in here thinking they're being funny, original or insightful when they post the kind of comment you just posted. Try some originality next time?

Ooooh bashing the newb are you, sorry didn't realise there was a hierarchy on this site, stop being a pretentious prat, it was neither meant to be funny or original it was an observation you just backed up..sorry Mr president!

Or maybe it's just that some people disagree with you and there is no big mind-control conspiracy. Sheesh.

"Sorry Mr. President."

Not bad. Marginally more original than the post I was replying to.

Agreed it's hilarious some of the stuff people preach about Apple products!

For fun go back and read some of the "larger iPhone" rumor threads from last year and earlier. Same people bashing notification light were claiming that it was unwanted, unneeded, or just plain stupid. Until Apple did it, naturally.
