Other vendors with new workstations due in November with the same new gen Xeon chips also haven't release yet.

Hmmmm, kind of weird. They should at least announce a pre-order date. The chance of actually buying and getting one this December is really slim now if you ask me.

It wasn't real to begin with, just some fancy photoshop on slick web pages with lots of components released or to be released meaning we get a machine with hardware already aging other than processor.

I am still expecting a new chassis for it, the iMac Pro would be the ideal platform for Apple to show a new chassis for iMac with. Why would you have a Pro item that will be on an old chassis should new iMacs come next summer with a new one?

Looks very real to me: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/10/30/imac-pro-demo-fcpx-creative-summit/ :p

it was never in the hands of an independent review site. you can mock up all you want, doesn't mean it works. By works I mean, performs up to what the website stats. Plus how many months AFTER they put it up on the website before one appeared even in that controlled of an environment?

again, why release it in an old chassis? If the iMac is truly getting a new chassis next update why would they ever allow the "Pro" to stick with the old? It is like "OH **** WE NEED SOMETHING TO SHUT UP THE INTERNETS" .

Apple did release a new 24" White iMac just one generation before the redesign to aluminum (2007). The iMac Pro being released with the current case is no indication that there will not be a redesign of the regular iMac, which is 5 years old now in design.

It seems as if it both easy to mock up a product or suggest that a company is just showing a mockup; both possibilties are equally without hard evidence.

The proof will be if and when the product is released for sale.

I think if the normal imac 2018 will have a redesign is due to the fact that doesn’t require room like imac pro chassis for xeon cpu and vega pro gpu. So if they want to make it even thinner than the imac pro components couldn’t fit that upcoming chassis

The 6-core 8th gen 65 Watt i5 chip is reportedly faster than the 7th gen 93 Watt quad i7. So a new "consumer" iMac design could have a smaller/thinner/quieter case that maxed out at 65 Watts and still be faster than the current top-of-the-line iMac. For customers who need more grunt, here's the iMac Pro (which needs the older, bigger chassis to deal with the heat from the Xeon/Vega combo).

For the nMp they released it at the very end of December so that they could meet their promised ship date. It really was a January release.

For many of us, it was more like a late February release, as that was when it actually got here. However, the Mac Pro was made available to order on:

Thursday, December 19, 2013, following a press release the previous day. So not quite at the end of December, more like a night before Christmas affair.

Do we know where this one is being made?

My understanding was that part of the nMP supply constraints was that it was manufactured in a new factory in the US, which was still tooling up.

If the iMac Pro is being made alongside conventional iMacs in the existing factories in China, then supply could be much better. That is, assuming demand doesn't swamp it, iPhone like. But it's a $5,000-$10,000 iMac. How high could demand be!

We will probably here about the new iMac in the next two weeks. I have the feeling only very very few people will manage to get their hands on the new machine before the new year. The majority will get it after that.

Which brings me to this point

The Vega 64 GPU is a wattage monster, and combined with Xeon CPUs with up to 18 cores, I wonder how noisy this machine will be in normal day-to-day use.

I also believe that the machine will be extremely noisy when pushed to the max. Which is very easy to do when you are doing 3D work. Given the fact all iMacs from the past few years (except late 2012 imacs) show the exact same issue it’s almost a given we will see the same behavior with this machine that has in the base model double the cores and a very power hungry GPU.
In the office I know exactly when someone kicks off a CPU pr GPU intensive task just from the noise coming out of their iMac. It can get very annoying.
I will buy the machine but I think I will immediately regret it.
We’re going to pay top dollar for a noisy machine that is bound to have manufacturing problems since it’s a first gen product.

Apple won’t be in a hurry to update it if they ever do update it. It depends how it sits between the future gen iMacs and the next Mac Pro.

Never buy Rev. A, eh?

But on the fan noise, it all depends if they've incorporated Mac Pro grade cooling into it. For all its faults, my 8 core nMP can be damn near inaudible even under heavy load.

So much so, that I suspect it's a common gesture if the screen is off for nMP owners to hold their hand over the trashcan to feel the fan to tell if the machine is on or off.

Getting back to the thread title, maybe Apple is being so quiet because they're checking noise levels. :p

This 100%. This is why i think Apple will do a redesign, even if its not too dramatic in 2018 for sells

So

So you want a noisy machine with a throttling CPU and GPU? No thanks..
doesnt matter so much the chassis for that...remember Apple can put on an imac pro double fans...so if we had now an i5 or i7 with amd 580 with that thermal input/output....no heat and probably not so much noise
Si depends on Apple what they want

A lot of talk about noise and heat with no evidence again, why so down on something before it’s even released, you people just want to hate something before you’ve even seen it it’s pathetic.

Apple have made a point of saying they have completely redesigned the cooling for the iMac Pro, so why not give them a chance to show they have done it right.
