Why is Apple trying to copy Android?

I don't recall apple ever saying innovative when announcing iOS 7. And if they did it was nowhere near the amount being shown here. People are putting words in their mouth.

I am not an apple apologist. I am OS agnostic but good grief people...

Apple sued for less similarities.
 
There is nothing wrong with being a follower. Look at the car industry for example. Wait for the opposition to develop and test their innovations and incorporate all the best features into your own product. Apple have taken some good pointers from Android and its all very welcome from where I am standing. 🙂

I honestly believe this validates everything Google has done with Android. Not only that, but if all Apple is going to do is follow Google, that means Google will always be several years AHEAD of Apple.

Nope, because Google's design execution is second rate, they may have good ideas, which I'm fine with Apple taking a cue from, but Google can not execute on the level of Apple.

You know Apple isn't always necessarily first everywhere, but they do it best, and they're doing the same thing now in mobile OS.
 
So I don't think the issue is that Apple is copying Android (again -- this is great for iOS users. In fact, they should copy more! Like swipe, please?).

I think the issue is -- and I could be wrong -- is that there is irony here. When Android copied features from Apple, Apple and their devoted fans called it stealing. Lawsuits ensued and people got the impression that Android couldn't innovate or come up with anything for themselves and just rode on the coattails of Apple's ideas. Now, the tables have turned, and no one is batting an eye. In fact, people are applauding Apple for finally adding features that Android had had for years.

That's the issue.

If the tables were turned, we'd undoubtedly hear no end of how Android is still yet copying Apple, and the lawsuits would undoubtedly continue to pile on. But if Apple is doing it, well, they're taking an idea that Google executed poorly somehow and "refining" it and making it better. Highly debatable, of course. Is the quick settings menu in iOS 7 configurable, for example? (Serious question).

Never mind the colors, some of the icons are downright ugly. Look at the Settings icon. What in the world is that? And the Safari icon just looks bizarre now with the white borders.

A lot of the icons just don't look very cohesive. Some have white borders, some are "full framed" icons, some have crazy colors, as mentioned, some are just plain black & white...

In any case, the are going to be a limited number of ways of interacting with a phone, just like their are limited ways of writing with a pen. At some point, all the companies are going to converge on very similar solutions. And this is where the patent system fails, for patenting a commonsense solution faced by designers of GUI's (e.g., swipe to activate) does not make sense any more than patenting the way to hold a pen.
 
I'm amazed no one is talking about the "Gesture" to go back feature. Is this feature integrated through the entire OS, or just Safari? I'm finding very little information on it.

Finally, gestures. This could be Apple's dedicated "back button" in many ways.


And the one thing that sort of sucks about the Control Center is that it eliminates a Zephyr-like feature to swipe up to go home -- probably the single coolest Jailbreak app.

To be fair the icon's on my S3 were hardly beautiful to look at. They are just icon's that take you to the app. Its not like we are comparing lumps of dirt to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel here! lol.

I feel iO6 icons are the best looking. Android icons are decent but kind of dry. Being that said, the new iOS7 icons gave me a wtf moment. At least on android you can change icons without a launcher, root, or custom rom. Apple should of included a theme or two, like a dark and natural earthly colored theme.

Nothing wrong with the existing back buttons so I'll probably continue to use them.

I've never got that 'you never know where it's going to be' line of thinking because I always manage to find it okay. I may or may not use the new method, but I see nothing wrong with the current method.

Apple think it's easier but it's going to be awful on the eye, the lines, the circles from emails look like Facebooks new chat system on the Iphone.

I really think people will notice a less pleasurable experience on the Ipad. The depth and quality will be gone with the removal of the felt and notebooks.

What should Apple have done? Well it's great Siri is improving. I'd have made Safari silver to match the Ipad, I'd have added folder windows to hide them, having multiple pages in IOS7 is good yes. Still no wiglets either? The lock screen had to change but not by being more flash like. It definitely looks slower than IOS6 so will be interesting to see how Iphone 5S handles it.

I'm personally now looking at getting an Ipod touch and ditching my Iphone 5 for maybe Blackberry or Sony. Not an Android fan but these phones have blues and darker shades in the OS. Iphone looks like a rainbow now, the pop up status bar with changes looks the worst. And yes it's worse than the leaks..so after some thought I'm not liking it.

I have another question why did they ditch the current Siri voice? I'm not anti Apple I hate Windows 8 and like many I run windows 7 which is better. Sometimes change isn't always good. MS Xbox One is also a step back..pre owned games ect..the size of it looks awful.

Sony lost there way for a bit with Sony Ericsson. The Cybershot phones were amazing, better than the 3GS at the time..I jumped ship after the Satio failure and I always knew even Apple had a time limit before they wrecked the OS or hardware design. Sadly keeping IOS6 can only be a short term fix as updated apps mean they might not work right and you have an obsolete device.

I'm seriously considering quitting Apple products now. I think leaving now is better before it becomes a sinking ship. Yes some like the change but there's a core fan base who hate it. I bought into Iphone from user experience from the 3GS which had a crap camera, rubbish features so I stayed clear..For me Apple are now just being a market copier and the design isn't better..so your aswell jumping to Android and enjoying the 12MP camera and larger screen and all what else they offer Apple don't.

But yes I think Sony are on the up again. I have a feeling PS4 will come back and beat Xbox One and the new Sony phones look decent. Blackberry seem good too. Z10 looks like IOS in ways even if it doesn't offer everything Android does.

Anybody else who is thinking of quitting what devices are you looking at? I will be avoiding the Galaxy though. 🙂

agreed, i think apple is following this rule: if you cant beat them, join them.
android is still way better, the new iOS still doesnt have many features. and the extra use of white color make it boring.

Now maybe there are some similarities, but, honestly, which looks better? Which do you end up gravitating towards at the end of the day? Apple's implementation is superior. Better use of fonts, color, composition, you name it.

I think Google are really second rate at this sort of thing, even Microsoft is better than them tbh.

IMO, the Google lock screen is better. Observe the contrasts that make for easy readability.

I wouldn't think that trying to read thin, white colors on a light blue background in the sun would be a pleasant experience.
