Foreign stuff tends to taste better as you get it so rarely ;) You are just too used to the same candy thus it tastes like cardboard so something new will reopen your gustatory nerves and taste delicious :p

Maybe, this was my first time eating European candy. I usually eat regular candy you can buy anywhere. Sometimes I'll eat some Mexican candy when I get the chance.

Also today, my friend came back from her Asia vacation. She brought me a whole bunch of White Rabbit, those where good.

Having grown up traveling often between the US and Switzerland I never really developed a taste for American chocolate and candy. Swiss chocolate is just so much better, there's really no comparison. Also having lived in France and traveled around most of the rest of western Europe, I can definitely say that even random candy bars and stuff are considerably better than their American counterparts. I even find the Euro 'Mars Bar' to taste better than its American counterpart (Milky Way). I don't really have an explanation for any of this...

If you're ever in Lausanne, Switzerland go here: http://www.chocolatsblondel.ch/
Hands down the best chocolate I've ever had.

Speaking as a Finn, I feel kinda sad for Americans and everyone else who does not have salmiakki. It's like one third of available candy has been denied from you. You have chocolate, various fruit-candy.... but no salmiakki.

As far as mainstream bars go, Galaxy is streets ahead of Cadburys. Then of course you have Green & Black.

Definitely!

Though not really mainstream, Thornton's deserves a mention as well. And OMG, Montezumas!

For simplicity's sake I'm mostly a Green & Black's 70% dark chocolate girl, myself. :) In fact, I predict a trip out to the cornershop in my near future.

High Fructose Corn Syrup, or rather the lack their of.

The higher cocoa solids also play a part, at least on the continent, british "family" chocolate tends to be vile vegetable oil based crap.

Yup. HFCS is disgusting stuff and it's in far too many American foods.

There are a lot of sweets that the British do so much better but I still miss some of the old junk food I'd get in the US. Payday candybars and Hot Tamales come to mind. The British just aren't as serious about their peanut-based or cinnamony treats. :p

What is Candy? the kitchen appliance manufacturer? oh you mean confectionery :)

anyway....

American sweets/chocolates are horrid, especially hershey. I went to Hershey (world?) in Hershey, PA a couple of years ago.... yuk! it tastes like baby sick. They had a section where they manufactured Cadbury chocolate there and even that wasn't nice. And that reeces peanut butter ... blah!

Although; Cadbury is hardly any better its full of Palm Oil its horrid stuff.

I don't like either particularly. The only UK chocolate I like is the old Rowntree's brands such as Yorkie and Aero. The Mars stuff just tastes too fatty and Cadbury doesn't have enough cocoa, although both are infinitely better than Hershey (Yuk!).

Of course if there's more than a vending machine selection on offer I'll go for Lindt or Green and Blacks anyway :)

I actually like the candy better in the States. The candy here in Greece sucks. No Skittles, no Reese's (god I miss that!!!!). Every time someone comes from the States to visit me, I make sure they bring me a nice amount of treats, so I can satisfy my sweet tooth.

No Skittles? I would die.....

I haven't tried much European Candy, but I love Swedish Chocolate.

I'll agree with you on Cadbury. Ick! But reeces peanut butter cups? Shame on you!! :D

Ive had a bag of skittles in the closet for about 5 months now, eating them nice and slow. Im almost done with them :( I could die for some reeses right now, and some starburst. Even though they have Doritos here, which I know isnt a candy, they arent as nacho cheesy as they are in the States.

How big of a bag? Starburst are good, but I hate Reese's. Don't kill me!;) This will sound weird , but have you tried Doritos and Cottage Cheese? Fairly good. :p

Ugh, I HATE cottage cheese. Well, I dont hate it, I just dont like it. The skittles are the biggest bag they have. I tend to take out the red and purple ones, since they are my favorites, and I leave the rest for friends  Same with starburst, except I only keep the cherry ones, because they are my FAVORITE!

If anyone is interested in buying me a couple of bags of skittles, starburts, and reeses, id be happy to paypal the money. I looked online for them, and while I found them cheap, the shipping prices were 3 times as much as the bags of candy themselves. So if anyone wants to help, please PM me. Thanks!

Okah. Just wondering. Tried Sour? Probably tied with Original, IMO.

What about your friends from the U.S.?

Theres a store that imports chocolate that I have visited, the european chocolate didn't taste anything special to me. It was good, but thats to be expected.

Only on MR could you have such an in-depth conversation with multiple people about chocolate!

I used to think expensive chocolates taste just same as Hershey's or M&Ms, but now I believe that expensive chocolates are in fact made with higher quality ingredients and they really do taste better.

My current favorite chocolate bars are Green & Black's organic chocolate bars.

I was on holiday in Finland fairly recently and I just couldn't get on with salmiakki. I still have loads of salmiakki vodka in my fridge that I just can't drink. Not for me.

I did however, become a little addicted to Fazer chocolates.

Mmmm. Probably. :)

My current favorite chocolate is Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares with Caramel inside. Mmmm. Rolos are a close second.
Really? No skittles? That's depressing.
Quite.

Krispy Kream doughnuts in fact tell so much about American candies. They may belong in two different food categories, yet they are so related in terms of taste. Four words: Just too much sugar. Sadly, many many many Americans do like that crappy sugar taste.

That's Krispy Kream. We have a bakery called Hilligoss, and it is amazing. Krispy Kream is ok though.

OMG, Loooooove those so much! Delicious! Have to limit myself to buying only a couple of squares at a time. If I bought a whole package, I'd eat the entire thing in one sitting!

I haven't had any in a while. Sad face. :( They're very good. And quite expensive. $0.50 for a square, right?

I agree. I have never understood the fascination with KKs...horrible stuff!
