I'm curious as to how that'd be possible, since the card only has EFI64 ROM.

For now, as far as we know… yes.

That may change. That having been said, I'd still pay a hefty premium to get a GTX260+ instead, since the 4870 is rather inferior in comparison.

All I want is Blu-ray support  ive said before and ill say it again, an $800 Acer will have a Blu-ray player but my $5000 Mac Pro dosent even have the option to add it....wtf...

Add it yourself...An Acer wouldn't run OS X, so by adding it yourself and using it in Windows you'd be accomplishing the same thing.

Pretty sad that you have to buy a drive and run Windows to do something you can't do in a 5000 dollar OSX machine.

I'm just pissed that their entry level desktop is $2,500. And don't tell me that a mac mini or iMac is a substitute. They need to have a desktop that starts at $900 or less.

I just can't see Apple doing anything like that...

Apple fits a certain niche and there has always been an 'Apple tax.'

You really do get what you pay for though and it is a quality product. I just cannot see Apple getting into the cheap desktop computer market "just to compete."

P.S.,

The Mac Pro is NOT an entry level computer and never has been. The iMac is the acceptable desktop computer and it is very very fast as it is.

You miss the point, its not add it yourself, its when your spending that much money, why is it atleast not a friggin option?

2nd, woopdy doo, I add it myself, I then get toast, im still fraked. FCS dosent support it, so if im running DVD Studio Pro, yup, still fraked!

Perhaps because it's a licensing nightmare according to Jobs. Is this true? There probably is some truth in it, but it sure hasn't stopped everyone else from using it.

You're missing the point. Last year, a 2799 Mac Pro came with 1600 in processors. This year, a 2499 Mac "Pro" comes with a 300 dollar processor and an 8 GB ram limit.

Also, outside of the case, the product is no more "quality" than any Dell workstation. Same Intel components.

or get this, it IS a mac pro specific blu ray drive..... all you ned to add extra is roxio toast 9 or 10 pro (for video byurning plug-in)
so like what 600$ extra? (599 from MCE's store WITH toast)

Will OSX allow me to view/author at 1080p?

The Mac pro ships with a Xeon X5550 Which costs 958$ if you buy them in bulk. So please stop with the 300$ proc nonsense.

No it doesn't it ships with a Xeon W3520 which costs the same as the i7 920.

Ah ok my bad i read somewhere it was the X5550, after some looking around some more i read your right. My Bad. Carry on with the Apple Mac Pro bashing. Probably just made it this expensive to avoid it competing with the imac then. I mean it should be around 1600$ then. Doubt many people would buy expensive imacs if it were.

Yeah the X5550 is being used in the dual socket ones, there is a lot of confusion and you certainly aren't the first to make the mistake :). The iMacs are probably one of the issues that contributed to the pricing changes.

That's the joke - Apple finally came out with the 1499 xMac desktop everyone has been begging for. Unfortunately, they're selling it for 2499.

I actually understand why they intentionally separate Mac Pro into two lines to upsell the 8-core configuration and I would make the same decision if I was any executive of Apple.

This Hackintosh idea is viable for an extremely small set of the Mac population. Even most of those capable of dealing with the technical issues will not go down that path.

So, if you don't like the pricing Apple has come up with for the new Mac Pro, please feel free to go build a Hackintosh. But stop thinking that telling anyone here or telling Apple is going to make one single bit of difference. Because it will not...

Please stop the whining.....

See, I dont believe in that myself BUT lets give Steve the benefit of the doubt and say its true. SO your telling me, back to my point that Acer figured it out for their $800 laptop, Sony (duh) has it, HP/Dell/Gateway, these guys all figured it out but somehow, the mighty Apple cant get passed the licensing nightmare? Thats where I would love to believe Steve but my BS flag jumps up high.

You must be rich. If you like to throw your money away into Apple's coffers, fine with me, it helps keep them in business so they can keep making Macs for me to purchase now and then. Just know that they charge HUMONGOUS premiums for added-on RAM, HDs, optical drives, etc. etc. Always have, always will.

This has nothing to do with somebody being rich or poor.....
