Your assumption that others use the phone like you do is irrelevant.
So you use your phone upside down so it slides in your pocket right side up? I've never seen anyone flip their phone around just so it's not upside down when it's in their pocket.

Doesn't it also depend on which pocket? If I'm putting the phone in my pants or coat pocket, I tend to put it in upside down, but when putting it into my shirt pocket, it's more natural to stick it in right side up.

That would be correct, I didn't think about a shirt pocket. Then again that's not very secure, especially for the plus models.

Yup, someone dug up the thread, but the issue still seems relevant.

If you insist...

Apple isn't likely changing their 3 year old design, with the possible exception of removing the headphone jack (apparently) and relying on the Lightning connector and Bluetooth instead, according to rumors.

I'll be happy if they move to Bluetooth. No more tangled cables!

I like the placement but I don't know the reason why Apple made the choice of putting it down there.

Any clues?

It was originally on top, for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. They switched to the bottom with the 4 I think. As others have pointed out, the iPod Touch had it on the bottom from the start.

It really doesn't make too much difference. It seems to be going away, if the rumors are true. Since I use Bluetooth, it won't be missed here!
