I've never understood why more people don't buy the 64gb. It seems like it should be either the 16gb or the 64gb. Going from 16-32 only increases capacity by 16gb but going from 32-64 increases it by 32 for the same price. Just seems like if you are gonna go 32gb you might as well go 64.

None of your post is rational. Perhaps this logic fits your personal situation, but many people, like myself, need more than 16 but not more than 32. Why would I drop the extra $100 on storage I don't need? Especially when I upgrade every year.

It's called running a business. That Chipotle burrito you buy probably costs them $1. They sell it for $6. Follow me?

No. That's not the same thing.

A burrito costing $1 to make but Chipotle charging $6 for it is like saying the 16GB iPhone costs Apple $20 to make, but they charge $200 for it... which is true.

However, if I want to add cheese to my burrito at Chipotle, the price isn't going up. If I want to add storage to my iPhone, the price skyrockets.

It's even worse when you consider the 2-year old variant.

1 year old phone 16GB = $550... 2 year old phone 8 GB = $450.

It keeps with the $100 for each doubling of memory, but you also lose a whole model year.

I agree the memory options are very arrogant. As if to say that people don't know any better, and those that do, what are you going to do about it? No other options for memory than what Apple gives.

Why we support a company with such a big head is a mystery to many.

I consider 16 GB models to be best value for money . I change my phones every year and pay full price for them and 16 GB makes more sense to me coz I have my iPod touch and iPad for my media needs.
100 bucks is kind of steep but then its working for them fine so yeah !

Also, don't forget, the phone prices have been the same for what - 3 or 4 years now? Certainly some parts have gotten less expensive like solid state memory. But there is also a lot of money spent on R&D. Sure the iPhones rolling off the production line only cost them a few hundred dollars. But that doesn't factor in R&D. Also, some costs have no doubt increased. Retina screens are expensive, increasing battery tech. The sapphire lens and fingerprint sensor are not cheap. Buying a company that specializes in biometrics. . .

My point here is that a lot of things go up in price over time. The iPhone has steadily improved and cost has stayed the same - actually decreased relative to the original iphone. Is $100 a lot to pay for additional flash memory? Yes. Is apple raking in money hand over fist? Yes. But I would rather pay an "apple premium" and keep the company successful than have them fail and be forced onto another platform.

The price is dependent on the consumer. Are they willing to pay for it? The answer is yes. The user places the price on the object, people wo need space will pay the extra hundred bucks, it's not about the raw materials. Stop looking at it as black and white cause it so much more than how much a memory card costs.

i always buy the best iphone.. i think few bucks difference shouldn't matter when it comes to satisfaction.

$100 price increase for each memory level is of course for profit. That's pretty much it, although I could see some of the cost coming from lower volume of production. Apple probably buys a ton more 16 GB memory chips than 64 GB memory chips.

I was hoping this year would be different given that practically every iPhone competitor either starts with more of allows cards to increase it on your own. , but, no, it's the 3rd generation with the same baseline storage.

Considering how much prices have dropped on storage over the years, it comes off as greed rather than simply looking for a profit.

While we're on the topic, why does everything I see for sale have this "profit margin"? Everything should be the same. If anything, there shouldn't be one at all, because that would be fair! Everyone should also be paid the same. Doctors should make as much as football players, and all services provided should be exactly at cost. It's not fair I tells ya!

honestly,

honestly, because they can.. whatever the market will bear, they can charge. No different than higher education in the USA or the cost of medical services..

But just think, it's HALF the price to go from 32 to 64, shouldn't that be considered a deal.. ;-)

A better analogy is drinks at a movie theatre: $3.00 for a small drink, $3.50 for one that is almost twice as big, and $4.00 for the huge one.

The incremental cost to the theatre (Apple) is small but they use the increment size so people will upsell themselves, increasing the theatre's (Apple's) profit.

I would hope it's any business's model. A fountain drink at any fast food joint/restaurant probably costs $0.25 to the business but we pay $1.00+ Why not be all up in arms over this as well? It's strictly business. If people are buying it why would they change?

its def not that simple, and I think its completely fair to call out apple on this. So many people (not firstapple necessarily) get really defensive when others point out the absurd storage costs.

Here's the difference- they are selling a phone saying, look at this display, look at the HD movies you can make, look at the high quality images it can take, hear how great your music collection sounds, look at the graphics these games have, and now it can run 64-bit apps.

The phone is made for using up a lot of space, which is great, and i want to play with and use all these things, i just dont want to feel like im being screwed paying 100$ for 10$ worth of storage.

I think a better comparison would be a gym that doesnt let you bring your own water, but charges 10$/bottle for theirs.

I think the bottom line here is people are willing to buy the damn thing. It's highway robbery, but the world is entranced by Apple. They are in a very good place.

I think that's quite a good comparison, honestly. The difference is, nobody would go to that gym. So, why have we decided to accept these prices from Apple then?

By the way, there are already amusement parks that don't allow drinks or food into the place, then charge $5 for a bottle of coke and $10 for a McDonald's quality burger. Disneyland comes to mind. And I guess they are doing fine too. LOL.

Because they can, is the answer.

If nobody bought the larger sizes they would be forced to reduce the price. People buy them in droves so they might as well throw money down the toilet if they reduce the price.

you're right no one would go to that gym, and I think that's a good question.

I think it just comes down to the fact that at the end of the day a smartphone is 100% a luxury item, so the same business tactics dont draw as much criticism. For me this is really the only thing i think apple is that sheisty about, I think all their premiums are fairly justified otherwise. And it prob wont last, files sizes and software are only getting larger, and their competitor (galaxy s4) has up to 96 gb (including removable) for a total of around 300$. Allowing this gap between them and a major competitor couldnt last too long.
