As recent switcher from Windows, I think the Finder is underpowered compared to windows explorer, for example you can't pause a file transfer.
Another thing I don't understand why it's not possible in OS X is cicle through options in a pop-up window, for example when you delete a podcast in iTunes and the program asks to keep or delete the file.

However the stability of OS X is better compared to Windows, the apps look and feel better (I hate the Metro interface in W8).
Mostly I'm just amazed how much can I do with mission control and the different spaces, when I have a dozen of open windows I can move through them easily and fast. Also quick look is amazing.

use tab to switch between options and space to select an option...

Yes Windows 8 tipped me over the edge to OSX - tested it for almost 12 months in various incarnations and even if I didn't have to pay for it (technet subscription) it wasn't worth it. Moved to an rMBP about a month ago and haven't looked back.

Fortunately with a good OS running with 7 I have simply bypassed 8-8.1 for my uses and await with interest the 8.2 RC on the test rig to see finally whether it's worthy enough to upgrade my systems.

"Why is Mac more convenient than Windows?"

I don't know if it really is anymore. It doesn't have the most apps or the best apps. The reason why somebody would choose OS X over Windows would be more of a preference these days than many great things. Registry isn't a problem for a lot of people, nor is the DLL. But OS X does have a way of doing things, so maybe that is what makes it more convenient.

I like the file system better, for example. I like the top menu bar. I think spotlight is better because of the way it indexes. There are certain things that work for my way of doing things better, but I wouldn't say it's an overall convenience thing that would affect everyone.

So, to sum up my argument... we have passed the time when OS X was just flat out more convenient/better/etc than Windows.

Thank you for your insight. As a long time windows user, I've been contemplating switching over to a MBP, but I am beginning to read more and more that OSX is really no longer superior to windows.

I'm still trying to make up my mind, and every time I think I've made the decision to buy the MBP, I read something that makes me rethink my decision.

Why choose when you can have both with a MBP? Best of both worlds with OSX and Windows (7 anyway lol)

For me, OS X is just easier to use and not as 'fiddly' as Windows, and I do think that it is safer from general threats from web usage. I haven't used Windows 8, only XP, but I know that I vastly prefer coming home to my desktop and my Mac's ease of use. I have an iPhone and an Apple TV and everything works so smoothly together, I love it.

Well, that really depends on the MBP. Even if OS X isn't the more convenient one all the time, Apple does make excellent computers. You might even like using it in bootcamp more than you like using OS X. The thing that you should realize is that the hardware is magnificent.

Plus with Applecare, you have one of the best warranties on the market.

I just felt I'd put my 2 cents in on the "how is OS X better than Windows" spiel. You can use Windows on a Mac, full EFI booting these days too.

Many people point out the built quality, but man... the built quality is something. sure it has it share of bad apples, but the quality check is as good as any company.

• the unibody chassi is an art of design, compared to many of the PC plastic computers. more and more high end pc's are following mac's design with unibody design in metal.

• The glass trackpad. well, one of the biggest + with a mac is its trackpad and the software behind it in osx. you will feel handicapped on a pc when you use the trackpad. I rather use the trackpad on the mac than an mouse. that tells you one thing or two!

• the backlit keyboard. well, same here. more and more high end pc are moving to the same sort ot keyboard as apple use. (its not their concept i know, but they implement it on their computers which i find superior than other keyboard concepts).

• retina display. and same here, pc's are getting there as well. but i have to point it out, i love it.

• OSX - biggest thing that made me want an mac.

well, there is some subject facts to consider :)

I did not. I was only quoting maflynn's post.

It would be nice if you two could add constructively to the topic instead of pointing fingers at each other :)

Why to prefer W8.1:
you can stop in transfert files
more game
app in mac open in 4 sec, in windows app open in 1 sec
the boot is faster
you can see the speed when you transfert files with a nice diagram

Why to prefer mac:
The build quality (laptop only)
the trackpad
the nice backlit keyboard
the fan is silent
the retina screen is very nice, but other pc have a very good screen also
the facility for install and uninstall app
you have a nice recovery :p

both are not virus free, but more people use windows (90%), so for hacker, windows is a better source of money :p

I've heard so many people say that Mac is more convenient once you get used to it.

Is there some specific features that make Macs more convenient than Windows?

As said before, programs can be installed just by adding or deleting their container files from the application folder.

The multiple desktop support is amazing and super easy to use with hot corners.

The memory management is insanely good, you can have thousands of tabs open literally on dozens of desktops on a 11" base macbook air.

The screen is more free from clutter.

The whole system is incredibly stable. I originally bought Apple computers intending to run windows on them because of their form factor, quality and other reasons, with zero intention of using OS X. But more and more I've found myself using OS X because it's just so much easier.

I honestly think it's just a matter of preference now. It's like choosing to drive a Ford or Chevy or Toyota. Years ago you could say one was a significantly poorer user experience than the other, but that is much less true now.

Each OS has its own quirks and shortcuts and once you get used to one you can learn to work very quickly and efficiently within it. Both OSs also offer third-party utilities to help overcome their shortcomings.

If your computing comfort/experience level is high, you'll quickly adapt to either one. If it is low, you might find OS X easier to embrace and understand at first. If your comfort level is such that once you've learned your habits you have a hard time unlearning them or learning new ones (or, frankly, if you go in with your mind already made up that one is better than the other), then switching from either one to the other might be a bit difficult.

Finally, it may also depend on your environment. You may get laughed at if you bring a Windows PC to certain creative groups (music, video, etc.) Your IT guy in a large business enterprise may similarly frown upon the use of a Mac in the company's all-Windows network. In both cases the issue is more perception/politics/policy rather than technological reasoning.

on a PC:

Mac OS X + Windows 8.1 dual boot (with VMware Linux Mint for web browsing to avoid virus)

It's not more convenient or less convenient in a scientific sense. It's a subjective matter. I like OSX, but not sufficient to never abandon the platform. I can use Windows 8.1 if I had hardware and price requirements that Apple can't offer.

Currently, I'm unsatisfied by having paid around USD 3000,00 for a image retained display and after repaired now it has an unevenly tinted display. In Brazil, there isn't a 14-day return policy, so I'm stuck with a defective unit which I'll have to live with for the next 3 years.

AppleCare not available in Brasil? I would buy a pack, wait two weeks then raise hell!

It's available but not in the same terms as Apple US. The 14-day return policy is only available from sales by the official online store (and not by authorized dealers). I bought my rMBP from an authorized dealer, so until I know I cannot return it.

No idea. I wouldn't use the word convenient. You should ask those people to clarify.

I'm in the uk and as long as you get it before the year is up AppleCare will allow you to get it exchanged at least for one that satisifies your requirements by going direct to Apple rather than the dealer. I have a client who has a cement plant in São Paulo as well as the offices in the uk and I've had stuff exchanged there that were bought here in the UK and vice versa also in Brazil.

I've spent some time reading the paper's on Spotlight & this simple looking feature is "very" powerful.

Coming from a win machine & an amateur photographer & video editing; I think the included iPhoto & iMovie are easier but yet more powerful than the winpc programs I could afford.

i really really really really really really really like the trackpad on my macbook, with all the gestures it makes browsing just like an iPad, which is very comfortable.

The Mac more easily provides the ability to create workflows, thus making the whole experience better. The keyboard shortcuts, the many uses of the Option key (Alt), Mission Control, Spotlight, and even the dock contribute to that. Add to that Applescript for automating things and you have a powerful OS.
