My silver iPhone XS is on its last legs, and I'm looking into getting an iPhone 12 Pro in ether silver or graphite. I've watched numerous videos, seen countless polls, and read way too many posts over the past few days, and silver seems to be, more often than not at least, constantly in the last ranked spot. I know tastes are largely subjective but am I missing something w.r.t. construction/fingerprint magnetism etc? I use my phone caseless if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Silver is not popular among male audience
Silver is also misleading color name, its more white than silver, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or Huawei P40 have real Silver color
But from what i have seen:
  • Men mostly target black and dark color, that why new iPhone 12 color, Blue, is so popular
  • Men prefers dark grey over silver like space grey/graphite, i would say 90 or 95% will buy space grey Macbook over silver Macbook
  • In the other hands, women target white/pink/silver more often than men
  • Dark grey or dark color does match better with black/dark color
  • Silver color does match better with white or lighter color
Its my favorite color, silver is pure aluminium which is often referred as ''professional''
Apple popularized space grey and for most of Apple users, its will buy other devices according it, in order to match color (space grey or dark iPhone, Apple watch, Macbook, hubs and accessories...)
BUT Apple whole ecosystem is not based on black or darker color, its white
First iPod was white (and silver!), cables are white...
White does match perfectly with silver color (or aluminium)
First Macbook Air + white cable/charger
Airpods are not black/spacegrey either but white!
I am a person who also likes to match color for my devices, i embraces Apple design philosophy -> so i stay silver/white team (before Apple, i was like 100% black team lol)
In this forum which most of users are male, its pretty normal to observe silver will be not popular at all
Now go on whatever forum which the vast majority of audience would be female, you will be surprised silver/white/pink/gold will get their favor
Anyway this year, i hesitated so much between getting an iPhone 12 Mini White vs Black, i eventually picked white!
I even added some silver on my case/camera lens protector to be fully a silver/white iPhone!
I have also a silver iPad Mini (but with chocolate dark brown cover lol), white Airpods Pro with white silicone case
I gonna buy next Macbook Air ARM with silver color as well lol

Before the Pacific Blue color was announced, I was dead set on either silver or gold last year. To me the the silver seem more white and the gold more creamy looking. The 11 Pro gold and silver look better than the 12 pro line up. I also noticed a lot of women chose the Pacific Blue (including me) color this year over gold and silver.

Silver is the most vanilla (bland) IMO. Space Gray is going to be ubiquitously popular among those that want a clandestine look. Gold looks especially good and refined this generation. Then of course Pacific Blue is the freshest color.

To answer your question I think the main reason is that it’s the most boring this year, not that there’s an issue with that. Get the color you prefer.

I just typed in Youtube research bar:
iPhone 12 Pro Silver unboxing -> most of thumbnails are women/girls
iPhone 12 Pro Pacifique Blue unboxing -> mostly men
iPhone 12 Pro Graphite -> mostly men

This is true...

I like the white (light silver) back, I’m just not a big fan of how the triple lens camera array looks on it.

Silver is my second favourite colour behind pacific blue, then graphite then gold, the chrome stainless steel frame and camera lens look sexy AF.

Like that the back looks more white this year, hopefully apple gets rid of silver for white next year on the pro models, matte white with chrome finish, would look awesome.

Welcome to the forum tazbrews.

I too have an XS, a silver XS. The phone is far from on its last legs, it's absolutely as-new and I'm seeing 96% battery health, but that doesn't stop me itching for a new one at the moment. We only get one trip through life, am I right? You surprise me by saying silver is not a popular iPhone colour because for me that and graphite (space grey) are the only colours for a man's tech! It's all a matter of personal taste. Do you think a Pro will be different enough to the XS to feel like an upgrade? I'm considering the Pro Max for that reason.

Pacific blue smashes it out of the park. I’m glad green wasn’t an option from last year because it would’ve been a tough choice.

Everyone is different and I couldn’t care less what colour somebody’s iPhone is. I picked blue for mine this year and I’m the only one who has to live with the device for a bit.

I like silver as well as the usual grey stuff and pick a different colour every now and then.

Exactly. I always like the new colors, but always keep buying black. I always use a case so whatever the color of my phone you don't see it anyways.

This is the first year that I’ve gotten a silver iPhone, and I absolutely love it. To me it’s very clean looking, especially since I don’t use a case. I might stick with this color for future upgrades but will wait and see what colors the next lineup will have before I make a final decision.

I had silver iPhones, iPads, Macbooks, iMacs, & a MacPro for many years.

My last phones were: Yellow, Product Red, and now Pacific Blue.

My current Macs are space gray or gold.

Guess I was tired of silver.....

Im usually a silver/white guy but I would have gone for graphite this year had I got one of the pro models. Went for the 12 and got the black. Nice to change things up a little.

Interesting. In my experience I see a lot more silver iPhones in the wild than I do any other color? One would think product red would be the least popular in terms of actual usage? I rarely see those phones. Always thought Space Grey (my color choice) was pretty rare. Interesting.

There are a lot of factors involved for choosing a color, including how it's implemented.

For an example, I chose a Space Gray iPhone X because the nearly black seemed generally elegant. Although, more specifically. the solid dark finish hides integrates shadowing and is a single tone that makes features such as the buttons and camera bump are less obvious.

In an interest of variation, my last iPad purchase was the "Gold" version, which is actually "Blush Gold" or more copper than gold.

Last but not least, if I were to purchase an iPhone 12, it probably would be the Silver. The Pacific Blue is neat and is a bit unique, a little flare. However, it's just not neutral enough for me. The Graphite is also nice, though doesn't have the same effect as the (seemingly) much darker Space Gray. Therefore, I'd embrace the Silver -- more white than silver based on the stock photos -- with its neutral, feature accenting bold contrasts.

iPhone 12 colors are all kind of unique
iPhone 12 White, its actually less white than 12 Pro and usual iPhone's white
Its a bit creamy but it depend of lights/reflections and viewing angles, it never shows the same kind of white color
Also silver mat aluminium from the edges have champagne/pinky tint
iPhone 12 Black, its almost same thing, it does have a sightly a deep blue navy tint
I did not even mention about Red color which is the most obvious
I never seen an iPhone 12 Pro Silver but from what i have seen on Youtube videos, its pure white, more white than any white iPhone ever made
My favorite color iPhone was iPhone X, a cloudy light grey white, this tint looks so good in reality
Although being not huge fan of space grey color overall but Graphite looks really great

Well im a man, and my latest Apple purchases have all been Silver. Iphone SE 2020 in White/Silver, Iphone 12 Mini White/Silver and Ipad Air 4 Silver. My Apple Watch S1 is also Silver. I prefer the Silver as it is basically the natural Aluminium/Metal colour. On the 12 Mini in matte it looks so industrial and beautiful. Prior to these devices though, i got the Space Gray versions of the 6s Plus and 8 Plus, as i preferred the Black front bezels (the Silver versions had white front bezels).

its a really nice color, and the fact that it isn't popular is a plus to me !

if I didn't get the pacific blue, I think I'd opt for the silver

I enjoyed having silver on my iPhone X a few years ago

I like the color blue, and it was a new color for me for an iPhone. Having used gold, white, black, green, etc, in the past. Then I had to get a clear case otherwise no one would know :) Last year's green iPhone 11 was in a sparkly clear case, which my sister likes when I gave her my 11 last year (with remainder of applecare warranty).
