literally the ********* remote ever. this whole swiping nonsense for some dumb UI effects is so bad and terrible. the ring around the center button. constantly malfunctions. just a ****** design overall. and annoying. apple has become everything about aestetics and nothing about practicality.
You can turn off swipe and if your ring buttons are malfunctioning then you have a bad unit and should try to get it replaced. Any other issues with it?

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned using the remote control function that runs on an iPhone as an alternative to using what I agree is a terrible device (the ATV Siri Remote). I have an older iPhone (a 10XR) that I use primarily to control various devices in my home theater setup. It controls my Monolith HTP-1 processor, my Sonos Port music streamer, and my ATV4K. For anyone not familiar with the remote control function on the iPhone, which can be accessed from the Control Center, I have attached a screenshot below. It is really much easier to use than the ATV remote.

I have used this functionality before and it's pretty good. Unfortunately for me, my TV is not the absolute latest so it doesn't support HDMI-CEC to allow for control of the volume. So I have to keep using the Apple TV remote for volume.

A cheap harmony (520) will solve all of these problems and more. CEC is terrible.

Why is CEC terrible?
It’s unreliable, depends on individual manufacture/device support, and can easily get confused or rendered inoperable if another HDMI device in the chain ain’t having it. It also only supports a limited number of buttons. Take the post I commented on as an example.

CEC also doesn’t support complex macros, or conditional operations. The harmony or other macro-based systems capable of discrete commands and activities/scenes are far superior and work with anything that accepts IR commands.

CEC is a black box, doesn’t scale, requires HDMI to function, and only (sometimes) works how you expect. Probably fine for most people who have a TV and one device. Terrible if you actually want full control of all your devices beyond power on/volume/navigation buttons.

Worst thing EVER designed?

Like worse than sitting on a throne made of swords?
Worse than a car that explodes if you get rear-ended?
Worse than a phone that got banned from being taken on airplanes?

Worse than a toothpaste company making TV dinners?

Please don't tell me the lasagna is real. 🤢 Also, a throne made of swords is pretty metal (pun intended).

I am pretty happy with my older ATV remote and I think I would like the current one.

a throne of swords ought to be raigned upon a brain desised applefan's brain dead head a zillion times over

Orrr the fact that all AppleTv devices support IR, so you can use any IR learning/smart remote solution you'd like.

Yes, of course. I use a Harmony remote as well. But for someone who doesn’t have a programmable remote and dislikes the ATV remote, the iPhone remote is something to consider.

I can use that one, and it's the remote that my wife prefers. It handles all of the basic functions. Far from a "POS".
I believe the new one is a good combination of this solid aluminum design with the addition of newer features. And if you don't like the swiping the wheel as the OP complains about (or your thumb grows tired from spending 30 minutes swiping through 1000 unwatchable Netflix titles), you do have the option of simply clicking up down left or right. Never had a malfunction either. Perhaps the OP has a defective remote? (a low or defective battery would cause problems)

No response, @waziazi ?
it should just know how to make me happy. i don't need to turn off anything. it should turn itself off. it should even mold itself to cup my palm just like a tit feels in my hand. everything should feel perfect. sorry. it ain't it. again i dont like it feeling ice cold in the winter.

Yes, scrolling let/right/up and down works well. But searching for a show and then typing the title or something similar is a pain in the neck. What has made it easier for me, in addition to the remote, is a bluetooth keyboard that uses AA battery cells, since I don't like to depend on rechargeable keyboards. I am using an older Apple keyboard that I kept from a previous iMac, which I find more useful than tapping the iPhones keyboard.

For typing it is much faster to use Siri button for dictation. It's a bit hit & miss on something like YouTube, but I guess not quite painful enough of an experience to make me get my phone out or use the bluetooth keyboard collecting dust on the end table. Lol

Needs an intuitive redesign. Apple too busy to listen to the customer……..that’s what led to blackberry’s downfall

That is true, but I find a tactile keyboard more useful, specially when signing in/out of Netflix, Apple TV, and so on. The same for searching movie titles, etc. This keyboard is next to the TV.

I dislike Siri, specially for texting family members with names such as Cathryn, Katelin, Katherine. Siri has no idea which name is the correct one, even when the contact text screen is open already, so I seldom use Siri in any of my devices. I feel the same way about Alexa. Maybe I am old fashioned or something 😇

I hear you. Siri has little grasp of context so I mostly just use it for dictation rather than computer-related tasks (is dictation even considered Siri, though?) Anyway, Siri on tvOS is actually pretty good about catching titles, actors and such that you dictate into the remote. At least, I've found so in my experience.

I prefer the original Siri Remote over the newer one. Besides having more functionality with some apps, and better touch surface, the Siri button placement is much more intuitive on the order design than the newer one.

Between the horrible Siri button placement, and sloppy touch surface and d-pad on the newer one, I am always accidentally hitting things on the remote that I didn’t mean to.

I also do not like the Remote app that’s built into iOS.

It is interesting, I always had a love-hate relationship with the original Siri remote, but Apple’s other solutions are so much worse, imo.

I hate remotes with touch surface. I find it inaccurate for most navigation (always under/over shooting). I hated it on the original Siri remote and immediately disabled it on the newer remote, and I just use the d-pad. So much more accurate control for me.
I also like the Siri button on the side because it's a different type of function from the other buttons so it seems appropriately separated. And being pretty stiff I don't ever find I hit it by accident. My only issue with accidental presses on the remote is when I'm not using the remote and I sit on it or an object hits it and by chance presses the Back or TV button, which turns on the ATV. I wish there was a setting so that only the power button turns on the ATV. I also really like the flush power button on the newer remote.
Two other things I really disliked about the old Siri remote, besides the touch pad, was that it was vertically symmetrical so I always had to visually check which way I was holding the remote, and it was so thin it would easily slide between couch cushions. I think the newer remote is an improvement in every way.

What don’t you like?
I dislike the touch screen, basically the lack of physical buttons.

Also, the phone is too big to be comfortable as a remote in my hand. Having to make sure I have my phone on me to use my TV is also pretty annoying to me.

It’s been a while since I used it, but if I recall correctly, there isn’t a D-pad on the remote app, either. Maybe there is a d-pad, I can’t remember if it was added later, but even still, the lack of being a physical d-pad makes it inferior to the Siri Remote, imo.

The remote app might be good as a temporary solution, but the original Siri remote, even with its flaws, is a lot better remote for me compared to the newer Siri remote, or the iOS remote app.

Can you no longer program your TV remote to do the job?
I did and I only need one remote then.

In my case, when I upgrade my iPhone every several years, I use the old iPhone as a dedicated remote control for several devices in my home theater (Sonos music app, HTP-1 web interface, and Apple TV). I have a charger stand on the table next to my easy chair that keeps the iPhone charged. Definitely handy for me.
