Yes, it's horrible. Form over function. Unfortunately it's also influencing other OEMs. For example, my new Samsung TV came with a similar remote: https://www.samsung.com/us/tvs/smart-tv/one-remote

Fortunately the remote for my old Samsung TV works with the new set. It's so much more convenient to be able to enter a channel number than navigate a guide, to name just one benefit of a traditional, full-size remote.

Main reason I never purchased an Apple tv. In my opinion, Roku has the best remote as long as you ignore the two paid buttons.

My biggest peeve is how damn sensitive it is, and they even toned down the sensitivity in the latest ones. Every button is so easily pressed just by grazing the remote.
That's my biggest gripe too. Yesterday I didn't hold the power button long enough so I got the drop-down menu that you have to use the click pad to control. Of course, pushing straight down on it wasn't perfect so it opened up the audio settings. Great! Now I get to try again instead of it just doing what I asked in the first place.

We won’t get it, but a button to display the menu/sidecar over the top of any app would be a nice feature for switching between streaming services vs having to essentially back out of everything.

Of late, our AmazonPrime subscription is acting up on our AppleTV4K. When exiting a show via the large Menu button, the show screen goes away and displays a black screen. Further presses of the Menu button does nothing, nor does Volume, Siri, or the play/pause button. I have to double-press the TV icon, delete the active AmazonPrime app, then all works normally.

Anyone have any ideas? Started, IIRC, at v18.6, which remains the current tvOS release even though both iOS and iPadOS have moved onto v18.6.2.

I probably have seen this but don't specifically remember it. I say this because other apps have been misbehaving as well. Disney sometimes gets hung up and lately if I want to continue with a show I have to select it from their menu. IMHO, Pluto has a pretty bad app to begin with and it gets confused at times as well. The answer is always to "exit" the app. It's gotten so bad I just figure this is the way it is.

Ahh the Apple TV remote...
It's not the worst designed product, that honor belongs to the Apple mouse with the charging port underneath it, or the mini with the power button at the bottom.
But its up there alright.
Both the old black one and new aluminum one.

I have no need for a new Apple TV as such, but I would certainly buy a new remote if/when it is improved.

Big part of why I use this remote instead:

Uses triple A's (which I prefer swapping in/out vs having to either constantly keep the remote plugged in or have it die right at the wrong time and need to be tethered to a charger for however long), is backlit, supports siri/voice and the Guide button even auto-opens into apps like DirecTV stream to get you right into the tv experience if you're subscribed to that service or one like it. It's $35 so it sucks to have the added expense but it's been a big quality of life improvement for my use-cases.
