I'm beginning to wonder if this is a case of people being "butt-hurt" ... I'm looking and a lot of the negative comments seem to come from the people who have recently bought a macbook air\pro.. or people who talk about wanting a new macbook but talking about price. I'm beginning to think people who are lashing out about the new models are just bitter because they can't get one.

The classic make fun of the girl you like kinda thing. Otherwise, if they're really not within the demographic this product is targeting, it demonstrates a complete lack of intelligence to make fun of a product in that scenario. I should go to the Kia forums and make fun of anyone who might like the 2015 Kia Sorrento... maybe it'll make me feel better about my old, outdated 2013 Toyota.

What does that have to do with education discounts from Apple?

Percentage wise, the local UPS store gives our students a larger discount on copying pages. They'll give a 5% discount.

That's 5% on paper. Apple isn't even giving 5% on something expensive and marketed at students.

Our Students also get 100% off on software etc... Except for Apple titles.

Apple really isn't interested in supporting education. Other big names provide free software worth thousands of dollars to help further student education.

One technology student I spoke with recently has obtained $20,000 worth of software for free that is relevant to his technology classes. I've logged into the university site myself and verified the titles he is using for free. These aren't temporary licenses either.

Sad that Apple shows no interest. It was the education market that built Apple from nothing in the early days.

I don't think its targeted at students. Its more of a executive machine.

Being a new product, apple can offer a lower discount knowing that there will be lots of people happy to pay full price. I would expect the discount to go up once the next version comes out.

Obviously I don't have any evidence, but I suspect that new product lines carry less profit as they have large RnD costs and new manufacturing processes to pay for. On this basis, it is reasonable that apple offer a lower discount until the margins reach a similar level to older lines.

I would suggest this is what they have done before, and is also likely why (for eg) the MacBook Air has come done in price so much since its launch.

The new macbook is the most mass-market laptop Apple has EVER released. If you don't see that, you may want to go back and re-take Marketing 101

If you purchase with a Discover card through the Discover Deals its 5% cashback from the Apple store, that's like $60. You can also do the student discount on top of that.

Too bad Apple doesn't offer a 10% edu discount like Microsoft. Probably go with Surface Pro 4 instead.

Care to elaborate a little more?

It's a macbook that has the most broad appeal. Specs that'll work for 95% of the Apple consumer base (look at one of the latest market studies of recent Apple purchasers - word processing, web surfing, iTunes, email, movie download\watching, etc is the 95%). And not only that, but it gives that 95% choices of color between 3 colors, something that's never been done in Apple's recent history of laptops. So much like this iPhone having been the most choice-filled, mass market appealing phone, so too will the laptop.

I have friends ranging from students to engineers to software devs to park rangers, and everyone is excited for this laptop!
