My theory is that they needed some mechanical button somewhere (yeah... there are side buttons, but those disappeared on the iPod touch) to handle resets, etc.
That's the reason I'd go for too.

I like the fact it is a physical button. The only thing that gets frustrating is when people ask to see my phone, 90% of the time they think it is a "touch" button and I have to say
"No PRESS it"
"No, I mean actually PRESS it"
"Here like this"
Rookie: "OHHHHHH, its a REAL button. I get it!"
i guarantee that the next iphone will have a touch sensitive button. i am shocked this one didn't.
Anyone? Surely, the phone would be much nicer if the button was touch as well! a la iPod 3G. Does anyone agree? Thanks

The plastic home button should be on the back of the phone IMO
I dont believe it that a touch button fits on iPhone due the lack of space on display in the current form. We probably will see a mini click whell replacing the home button to fullfill consumerism (and replace ipod) and also to help to scroling pages faster
if the home button was apart of the screen or some other touch thing, thats just another touch/sensor/screen that has to be active all the time and would just suck more battery life.
